It’s no surprise that teens engage in reckless activities, but kids today are doing much more than sneaking a drink of alcohol. The newest trends can be deadly for your kids -- from street racing to car surfing. Dominic, 18, is obsessed with illegal street racing, and his friend, Justin, boasts that he’s driven 147 mph on the highway! Dominic’s mother, Susan, fears for his safety, but doesn’t know how to control him. Can Dr. Phil get the boys to put on the brakes? Then, 17-year-old Trais was street racing when he accidentally killed a wheelchair-bound mother of two in front of her children. Don’t miss his strong message for Dominic and Justin. And, meet a mom who worries that her 13-year-old daughter spends more time in a virtual online world than in the real one. Can Dr. Phil help the girl return to reality? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

You are the ONLY thing that you can control

Quote From: jhawk964

I am posting a message regarding your segment on street racing.  I don't give a crap about the show and don't typically watch, and I'm glad I don't.  My girlfriend does and that is the only reason I saw the episode.  I was so troubled by the beating these teenagers were taking by you and your audience that I took the time to set up the account to post a message.  My girlfriend wouldn't allow me to use her username.  First of all, the racers are not sorry about driving fast, don't fool yourself.  They are in a hostile enviornment and want you and your audience to release the death grip.  All they can do is apoligize.  In addition, the accidents that occur due to street racing cannot compare to the number of accidents due to people who are driving impared or 'drivers' who simply CANNOT DRIVE.  What are the odds?  One in a Thousand?  One in Ten Thousand?

You also talk of sanctioned events at drag strips.  Please.  They have so many rules and regulations and mandatory modifications and fees that it drains most of the fun out of the race.  You never aknowledge the fact that men have been drivng fast for ever, even when you were younger.  I guess that years ago it wasn't so taboo. My father would atest to that.  Driving fast can be dangerous, no doubt, but you have called out everyone that has ever dropped the hammer on the car next to them to edge away.  There is always that little sense of pride.  I wouldn't condone someone busting down through a school zone at 90 mph but open highway, I don't see a problem.  I run 100+ mph down the interstate everyday and have no regrets.  Drivers encounter more hazardous situations everyday on the road than me.  If you are going to drive fast you have to pay even more attention to your surroundings than a normal driver would even begin to think about.  There are many activities that are rendered safe, accecptable and lawful that are much more dangerous than street racing, when practiced by those uncapable of handling the circumstances.

I will leave out the fact that you are committing a crime because I can see that does not matter to you.  I will leave out the fact that high speed racing kills because that does not matter to you.

You say that you are a good driver and that those who die are rookies- to paraphrase.  I will assume, for the sake of argument that you are.  You are in total control of your vehicle- as you say.  That is the only thing that you are in control of.  You cannot control a deer jumping in front of your vehicle.  You cannot control a slow moving wheelchair being in the middle of the road when you whip up to it at 110 miles per hour.  You cannot control a tire blowout.  You cannot control the other drivers on the road who might not be as excellent a driver as you.  They might swerve in front of your vehicle.  They might be driving below the speed limit and cause you to rear end them.

Being a good driver means to recognize these things.  You don't care about your own life because you have the mentality of a daredevil but it is not only your life that you are putting at risk.  My family shares the road with you.

Street Racing

I know how scary it is to get that call that there has been an accident.  My son didn't get his drivers license until he was 18.  On the day he received his license he went out with friends.  I got a call about 2:00 in the morning from him telling me he was in jail and that he had totaled the car.  He was frantic to find out about his best friend who had been riding in the back of the pick up at the time of the accident, and was thrown from the vehicle.  His friend had been taken by Care Flight to the hosptal and my son was afraid he was going to die.  He had made that split decision at a red light to race the car next to him.  When they got to the next intersection he couldn't stop in time and broadsided another car.  Thank goodness the other car didn't have a passenger or they would have been killed. His friend ended up being fine but I've never been so scared in my life, all I could think about was if that boy died that I would never see my son free again.  My son is now 26 years old and is just now able to get his drivers license back.  These boys think that nothing will ever happen to them, but my son thought the same thing.  It only takes once for something to go horribly wrong and end up hurting or killing innocent people.  I hope they learn their lesson and their parents don't have to get that call in the middle of the night.

I am in Awe of him !!

I wanted to say that the brother of the woman who was killed by the racing teen, needs to be commended for not only saying he forgives, being man enough to actually do it. I wish there were more compassionate, caring, forgiving people in this world like him.

I feel sick!

I just watched this episode as I fed my 2 month old son and I felt sick to my stomach. The thought of losing my son or husband b/c of such dangerous, irresponsible behavior disturbs me to my core.  I only hope that their change of heart was sincere.  I believe that street racers (and their parents) should be treated as harshly as drunk drivers, if not more so.

Street Racing...

If Dr.Phil thinks, even for a minute, that these boys will stop street racing - HE couldn't be more wrong. I'm around street racing sometimes and a lot of that has to do with the fact that many of my close buddies (including my boyfriend) are very much into cars. They have been for many years now. They street race every now and then and sometimes I've been apart of those races. And you'd be shocked to see the wide range of people that participate. That's right - ADULTS TOO.

Either way, I'm not saying that street racing is okay. I'm not saying that it matters who, exactly, is participating. It doesn't matter if YOU THINK you're a good driver or 'good at street racing'.. because it's everything else that you need to worry about. You may be able to control what you're doing (you think) but you can't control what the rest of the world is doing. It's OTHER PEOPLE that don't know how to drive. It's huge pot holes and uneven ground YOU MAY NOT SEE that 'causes you to lose control. How about bad weather conditions that can strike at anytime. Children running out onto the road.. maybe even adults.. WHO KNOWS! You need to be prepared and the truth of the matter is - people who street race are NOT prepared. At least when you're at a track, it's set up for you to drive like that. It's a general understanding among everyone there that people will be racing, driving at high speeds. Not that it's more safe, but it's a controlled environment meant specifically for that.

Street racing, in my opinion, will always be a huge problem. I can bet that those 2 boys won't stop street racing until the day they hurt OR even worse.. KILL someone. It's sad but it's true. Take smoking for an example. It doesn't matter how many warning signs are placed infront of our faces - we still choose to light up. When we have lung cancer - than we've had enough. Something drastic ALWAYS needs to happen in order for people to change their behaviour. And this is the truth people, you can't deny it.

Street racing industries

Quote From: rtsdfred

Do you think it just might have somthing to do with all the illegally modified cars known as "tuners?"

You've got an industry that has developed around this craze; cable television shows, parts supppliers and retail sales.

And its illegal, and the police know it and the car owners know it.

Its pretty obvious when you see, AND HEAR, one of these modified cars on the streets. So why aren't the police pulling them over and writing some tickets?
You are absolutely right on all counts.

It seems that if there is a buck to be made, someone will be willing to do what is necessary to make it, legal or not. Perhaps we need laws to make the people who do illegal modifications liable for the damage their "creations" do. Because I bet a substantial number of these kids have more money than brains and have to go to pros for modifications. If a few of the mechanics lost their shops, maybe others would think twice about what they are doing and what they stand to lose.

Why not pass laws to confiscate any illegally modified car, whether caught in the act of racing or not? Maybe if the police knew that their actions would do more than simply result in a ticket they'd be more vigilant about stopping these punks.

Sadly, I think the only way to get parents to control their children is to hit them in the pocketbook. Knowing their darling baby is endangering other people's lives doesn't seem to do the trick. In some towns where parents were made liable for vandalism done by their teens, vandalism was magically reduced. Once it cost the adults money they discovered that they could, in fact, control their kids. The same thing could work with street racing.

12/03 Shocking Teen Trends

I was extremely disappointed in Susan and Lezlie (the two mothers on yesterdays show). They both have let this go on way too long and have given in numerous times. When are you going to finally put your foot down, be a mother/parent and stop this behavior for good??!! It's going to be too late if you wait any longer.

As far as Susan goes...you are absolutely fooled if you think that your son Dominic is going to give up street racing. Nothing on the show has truly changed how he feels. He was definitely not sincere. I mean come on, you sold his car then went and bought him a new one with more power two weeks later?!! Get real and get control lady!!

And as far as Lezlie goes....you are the one enabling your daughter Lexie's behavior 100%. She is buying things for her virtual avatar with real money....YOUR MONEY!! I mean seriously, if you really wanted her to stop you would not be giving her your CC information to continue. Your the parent-not her!!!

My Friend

The guest on the Dr. Phil show was actually one of my friends. Trais lives 4 houses down from me and everyday that I passed his house I would see his nice red car that eventually took an innocent persons life. Watching the show brought tears to my eyes to have to see the victims family, and the mangled wheelchair that she was in. It made me realize that life is so valueable and even though Trais made the mistake of accepting the street race challenge, I deeply adrmire his courage and his will to change things to prevent future illegal racing. It is alot to bare on a young teens shoulders, and he will never fully forgive himself for the actions he made, but I have never been more proud to call someone my friend. Someone who is willing to re-live this nightmare for the benifit of others.

Laughable?

Quote From: smartass408

Ok,  first let me say, I don't know about street racing, nor do I care about it at the moment.  The one thing i do know about however is video games.  I think the game  Dr. Phil chose to talk about is laughable.  Second life is a second rate game and there aren't even that many people that play it.  I think the subscriber number varies anywhere from around 1-4 million.  If Dr. Phil or his staff knew anything they would have looked at the game World of Warcraft or Everquest.  These games have a much more addictive quality.  World of Warcraft has double the number of subscribers of Second Life at around 9 million and is a much more popular game, and there have been stories of people killing and killing themselves over these games.  All this just goes to show me how uneducated most people are about the games that are out there.  So bravo Dr. Phil for talking about a game that no one plays.  If you really
wanted to talk about relevant games, you would have done the story on World of Warcraft.

Also, i'm 19 and i know enjoy playing World of Warcraft, and i've had some days where i've played 10 hours or more a day.  I've been playing since i was 17. I currently have over 1 month of time played in the game.  Yea i know that's alot, but i feel that it didn't affect my life in any negative manner. I graduated high school with a 3.995 GPA and i went to plenty of school and out of school functions and i've had a girlfriend for over 3 years.  So i don't think Dr. Phil or his staff really know wtf they are talking about.

just my 2 cents
Ah, to be 19 again and so sure of everything . . .

I think the point was not to question a particular game but the TYPE of game and the dangers of using it to escape reality. To say Dr. Phil's comments aren't valid because he didn't site the really addictive games misses the point entirely. If a person's life is so dull that he or she needs to spend hours a day in fantasy land, that is a red flag that change is needed. How sad to trade real life for an illusion, no matter how much it massages the ego.

About the young girl . . . Sure, being 13 can be a painful, roller coaster ride, but escaping it in a fantasy of fancy houses, cars and hot clothes will not help her grow up. It's hard for me to understand how her mother let this get out of hand the way she has. But at least she seemed determined to take Dr. Phil's advice and take control of the situation.

Hmmm, so when you are doing 100+ (I'm assuming MILES PER HOUR) and you come up on a tractor trailor, and can't pass him because you are blocked, you are such a WONDERFUL driver that your car will stop on a dime ?
So if you kill someone or injure someone from your speeding, ANYTHING can happen to the best of drivers, it would be thieir fault because you are such the superior driver, and being the superior invincible driver you are, the laws just don't apply to you.
The rules and regulations at the tracks and drag strips are there for something you PUNKS don't get, SAFETY, for yourselves and the spectators.
So how "PROUD OF YOURSELF" will you be if you injure or kill someone ? Yep, there's that sense of PRIDE.
Yes people have been driving fast for years, that's why rules are changing, and police should be making their precense felt more on our roads, it isn't up to YOU or anyone else to decide whether or NOT myself or my kids are safe on the roads.
But then you're probably one of those people that thinks having a 4x4 means you're glued to the road in the snow.
