It’s no surprise that teens engage in reckless activities, but kids today are doing much more than sneaking a drink of alcohol. The newest trends can be deadly for your kids -- from street racing to car surfing. Dominic, 18, is obsessed with illegal street racing, and his friend, Justin, boasts that he’s driven 147 mph on the highway! Dominic’s mother, Susan, fears for his safety, but doesn’t know how to control him. Can Dr. Phil get the boys to put on the brakes? Then, 17-year-old Trais was street racing when he accidentally killed a wheelchair-bound mother of two in front of her children. Don’t miss his strong message for Dominic and Justin. And, meet a mom who worries that her 13-year-old daughter spends more time in a virtual online world than in the real one. Can Dr. Phil help the girl return to reality? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

The internet is a must. The high school my daughter attends is one of the best in the country and the teachers use the internet everyday to post homework after school. You MUST have a computer to be sucessful.

My daughter had downloaded a new browser on my desk top and I didn't even know it. To me it looked the same but she could open AOL EXPLORER and the "internet history" would only show up on that browser which is why I didn't see it. Also the fact that if your laptop has  wireless on it means that they can pick up a wireless connection from other people and you would never know. I have since found out she had 3 different places in our home that she could pick up 3 different internet connections.

She no longer has a laptop.

Parenting is a FULL TIME JOB.  Stay on it!

Thanks for your advice and for sharing your story.  That is one of my problems is that my kids are more computer savvy than I am.  Hiding her internet history takes knowledge.  I would not know how to do that.  Maybe I should take a course!

I am sure that your daughter will do well with you as her mom.  She was off track for a time but it sounds like you have her back on the rails!!

I saw five people Die...

One night I was leaving a restaurant with a friend.

I went into the street to hail a taxi, and two gals edged out further, as a joke, to 'steal' our taxi. We egged each other on this way, when suddenly my friend, standing on my left ( I am blind in my left eye) pulled me back towards the curb. Two motorcycles were racing each other. They were probably going more than 100. They, the two male drivers were not wearing helmets, neither were their girlfriends.

I remember thinking, "why don't the paramedics pull her dress down" as I looked at the girl I was just playing with, and saw the tiniest tear in her underpants
with her bottom showing. Then, in the same breath realizing that she was dead. Then I watched as the boy closest to me tried to crawl to his girlfriend, who was dead...and he looked like a solder from a movie, covered in blood and wreckage.

I went to the hospital the next day. Mostly for closure.
The sister of the boy was broken with grief.
When I said I had seen everything she geared herself for a confrontation...and then I explained that I just wanted to say how sorry I was that this had happened.
When I left that day, I removed this event from my mind for more than ten years.

My friend did the same.

And our lives were never the same.

Too bad nobody enforces this unless they are caught, or worse they get in an accident.
I was mistaken in my post. The passengers have to be 21, not 18. That would be hard to police. But, the school attendance provision can be policed. Missing ten straight days, or having ten unexcused absenses in a school year, is reported to the Department of  Driver Services. And, the license is suspended until for a year, or until their 18th birthday. Whichever comes last, I presume. My husband and step-daughter were having a time keeping his 16-year-old grandson in school Until they told him he couldn't get a driver's license unless he stayed.

shocking teen trends

My daughter who is 17 was involved in an accident  oct. 23, 2007, which happened to be two boys drag racing.  they wre going south and my daugther was going north, on her way home from school.   this one boy who is 17 years old lost control of his car, slammed into my daughters drivers side car, which hit the other cars on the road.  This accident had a total of five cars involved.  and it all happened because two teenage boys decided to drag race on our roads.  My daughter was at the wrong place at the wrong time.  I thank the Lord everyday that my daughter managed to get out of her car, after all this. she ended up hospitalized for a fractured pelvis.  But I tell you, I had seen her car, and I know she had angels protecting her that day.  From the looks of her car (which was totaled)  you would never have thought someone would survive that.  these two boys could have killed my daughter that day, all because they wanted to drag race at 3:30 pm, in the middle of the afternoon on a busy four lane road.  Now we are going to court and are talking to lawyers.  This just did not have to happen, and could have been so much worse.  and I thank the Lord that he was with my daughter that day.  now my daughter is terrified to drive and having nightmares.  This just did not have to happen.  An accident i can see, but drag racing is just stupid and these two teenage boys could have caused us much more pain. thank God I stil have my daughter with me.  but these boys need to pay.  this was the worst day of my life

You have to ALSO remember some things just happen for the sake of happening. No matter IF this particular family 'just happen to extend' their sons curfrew an extra 2 hours or not. When its our time to go, its our time to go. Unfortunately its the simply, yet harsh fact and reality of the situation...

I can remember, even today like it was yesterday, it was now 8 yrs ago when our hockey team was ready to take to the ice when one our our team members was running late for the game. He was a nice, quiet person and an excellent team/hockey player, a popular kid in high school as well. It just happen that, THAT SPECIFIC night he was out driving with a girl (who was also a good friend of mine, a popular and attractive girl in school) when they were coming into town, she was driving at the time, it was a regular 1/2 ton drunk and they were on a gravel road and connects to a normal asphalt road when she hit some 'pot holes' I guess you could call them, it was a good stretch of these pot holes in the road that IF you hit them you could lose control of the vehicle that you were driving. The poor guy who's real name was Trevor just recovered from a BAD broken leg injury and was so excited to come back to play hockey with all his buds, when my other friend who was a female and her real name is Jennifer lost control of the truck on the gravel road when she came across these pot holes in the road. As a result she lost control, the truck left the road and Trevor was thown from the truck, as it happened by amazing luck the truck happened to roll on 'him' after he was thrown from the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Jennifer did survive the accident and to this day she is a great individual who is married and Im sure still thinks of that night.

We were all just about ready to take to the ice when the news came to use that our good friend and teammate was killed in a truck accident. I instantly remember just standing up at the time and feeling my grip on my stick when I heard what happened. All I could do was look down at the ground, staring at nothing and just being empty inside, I guess I didnt know what or how to feel as it was the first friend I ever lost and to hear it that way before going out on the ice infront of alot of people.....

I guess the point of the story is that you never know when or how it can happen. Vehicles are and can be a deadly weapon, even if the intentions are purely innocent. It was just a bad situation and a good friend who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I know I'll never get the opportunity to celebrate another goal with him or another championship and that really sucks. Life is so precious and yet the human body so fragile.. I just with street racing punks would realize this.....

I have to date lost 4 GOOD FRIENDS due to accidents in cars/trucks and Im still only so young myself. Even for myself I had a close call when me, my brother, my mom, and my dad were actually driving back from the USA (Montana) Great Falls actually, to Calgary, Canada. We flew from there because the flights to Virgina were sooo much more affordable but because of the time of the flight we were all so tired, that all I remember was falling asleep in the back seat, and the a few 'brief' flashes or memories and then waking up hanging/suspended in my seatbelt. As it turned out we ALL fell asleep including my mother who was driving, to make a long story short, she happened to wake up just as the car was going into the ditch, swerved too hard, came back on the double lane, lost control went in the middle ditch of the 4 lane - seperated highway, the car started to roll repeartly and continued to roll and came to a stop ALL the way on the other 2 lanes of the highway that were going the other way. JUST by sheer luck no vehicles or semi tracker trailer trucks were coming at that time or we ALL would of been killed instantly. As it happen we all survived, even my mom who's neck was wedged between the steering wheel and the windshield... Thank-god cause it sooo simply could have all gone soooo bad for all of us...........

When its your time, its just your time. That's it, that's all. Nothing more I guess I can say.

Yes, when the time comes, it will happen.  That is why we are not to know exactly when or how..

Teen Trends

I watched this show. I can't even fathom what this boy's mother was thinking. She sold the car and then allowed him to purchase another one. I don't care if he was 21 years old, if that child was living in my home and street racing, he would have to give up the car or MOVE OUT.  I can't even imagine this mother losing her own son due to a street racer.

As I sat there listening to the two boys' nonshalant attitude towards street racing, I was sick. Sick to think that my son, who has been driving 1 year, is a straight "A" student, a loving brother to his 8 and 14 year old brothers, wonderful son, and exceptional friend could be at risk everytime I allow him to leave in his car to go to school or work because some maniac kids need to get an "adrenaline rush" from going 100+ mph.  Those boys', and other kids like them, total disregard for life is appalling.

Parents, step up, stop thinking your kids deserve the latest model cars and all the money they need to make it "there own", What about an older Ford Taurus, etc. Parents, talk to your kids. Money doesn't solve their problems, you can, just by listening.

Had Trevor been wearing a seat-belt, he probably would've survived the wreck, as well. No one rides anywhere with my husband, or me, without buckling up. Just over the state line, in SC, motorists can be pulled over just for themselves, or their passengers, not wearing seat-belts. It's an automatic $25 ($75 maximum) fine for each person.

Trunking

"Trunking" is another dangerous driving trend. When there are more passengers than seat-belts, the extra person rides in the trunk. The driver usually isn't wreckless, drives within the posted speed limit, but the passenger riding in the trunk can be seriously injured, even killed, in a rear-end collision. In one instance, when the car was rear-ended by someone going too fast and following too close, the trunk flew open and the passenger was ejected,  getting run over and killed by another motorist.

thanks

Thank you Dr. Phil for trying to get through to these kids..  I have a 5 yr old daughter and a 1 yr old.  And to tell you the truth I'm scared of driving at night due to the fact that these street racers are all over the place.  I fear for my families lives'.  I really hope that you got through to these kids and hopefully you have stopped two on your show and many more that have watched the show...

And to the parents out there..  Why are you even letting your kids out there knowing that they are going to race?  Do you realize that you have the power to take the keys and then call the motor vechicle dept and they can take there liscence for life?
Grow a back bone and control your kids before they kill somebody or kill themselves....

Shocking teen trends

Quote From: ladynson

The kids are too young and stupid to know any better, as far as I am concerned it is all the parent's faul!  I would never give a second car to spoil little brat like the one this woman has produced, let alone a first one!  We really need a parent license for some people.

Well its not like the mother went out and paid for a 2nd, car, the son paid for it out of his pocket and he is 18 years old, he doesn't need parent permission for anything. I would think if she just wanted to not fight with her son, that she would then do something to his cars, to make them stop running.
