It’s no surprise that teens engage in reckless activities, but kids today are doing much more than sneaking a drink of alcohol. The newest trends can be deadly for your kids -- from street racing to car surfing. Dominic, 18, is obsessed with illegal street racing, and his friend, Justin, boasts that he’s driven 147 mph on the highway! Dominic’s mother, Susan, fears for his safety, but doesn’t know how to control him. Can Dr. Phil get the boys to put on the brakes? Then, 17-year-old Trais was street racing when he accidentally killed a wheelchair-bound mother of two in front of her children. Don’t miss his strong message for Dominic and Justin. And, meet a mom who worries that her 13-year-old daughter spends more time in a virtual online world than in the real one. Can Dr. Phil help the girl return to reality? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

It doesn't seem to register !

I think we all may benefit from the understanding that teenagers, and their thoughts and minds do not always absorb the gravity of their behavior.  I can speak about this because A)  I have 4 biological kids, all in their 20's now , one of whom has been in jail, and continues to walk a fine line and B)  I am a registered nurse ( 30 years this year), and I have worked with teens in a recovery unit, and for the majority of my career, in a post anesthesia unit.  Their brains do not function the same way as an adult brain does.  Talking calmly, reviewing a family in distress after the fact, talking about it, just doesn't usually cause the lasting outcome we all would feel comfortable with.  Conversely, touching, seeing, allowing the reality of reckless behavior to enter their minds via the eyes, and emotions does work.  My suggestion ?  Create a program, in conjuction with the hospitals and court systems to allow anyone who is arrested for reckless driving, intoxicated driving, etc.  to serve a few nights in a busy ER trauma room,  or paramedic team. Let them see and "feel"  the effects of reckless behavior.   That emotional reality tends to affect their decisions

street racing

i am a former street racer that just watched the shocking teen trends and i would like to tell you that yes the way that these guys are street racing is wrong...... but when i would race we would meet up late at night on a road that was very calm and we would have a person on both top and bottom of the street that would be watching for traffic and give the ok that it is clear for us to do a street race....... we never would street race where there would be inosite people that could be hurt by our actions

I don't think so - not even for a second.

The kids are too young and stupid to know any better, as far as I am concerned it is all the parent's faul!  I would never give a second car to spoil little brat like the one this woman has produced, let alone a first one!  We really need a parent license for some people.

NO NO NO! Those kids know what their are doing. If they are smart enough to write and pass a written exam and then pass the driving exam to get the license in the first place (IN CANADA anyways) then they sure as hell know what they are doing. Dont give me that "well because they are ONLY 16, 17, 18) their brains don't work properly. They completely and FULLY understand WHAT they are doing, and even the LAWS they are breaking. To some of those teenagers maybe thats part of the whole 'rush' about it.

Never fear, what goes around - comes around. It always does. I promise you that! It may not happen today or even tomorrow. But it always has a way of catching up to itself......

12/03 Shocking Teen Trends

Quote From: mkpd45

It's so frustrating to hear how ignorant these adolescents are.  The mothers  don't seem to fully understand the seriousness of the situation.

As the detective was talking in one segment I noticed an adolescent female laughing in the background.  I don't see anything funny about the situation.

Yea but remember that adolescents/teenagers ALWAYS think they know it all or always think they know more then their parents/adults. That's just their nature as kids. Im only in my mid 20's and when I was a teenager, I can remember COUNTLESS times when my mom said something and I was like 'bah what do you know, Im right and your wrong." and I'll swear on a 100 bibles my mother was right 99.5 times out of a 100.....

So unfortunately its a combination of thinking they know it all and immaturity that usually will catch up with them.. well and also karma/fate!

street racing and baby

this topic hits home. my sons father, roger, is an illegal street racer. he is an adult and, since I am not in the relationship anymore, what he does with his life is his business. However, when my son gets into that car it is my business. Roger refuses to drive normally, and obey speed limits. He has picked up my son, gotten mad at me, and ripped out of my driveway throwing rocks and gravel, revving up his engine, flooring the pedal and screeching his tires all the way down the street. I have also been in the car and said to slow down. In his retaliation, he decided to go 120 miles an hour on the freeway, with me and my son crying. I am afraid of my son's life every weekend he gores with his father, i do not want to keep him away from his father, because he loves him, but I'm not sure what i can do.

as a mother of a child with a street racer, i know that this doesnt always happen. i never once supported this habit, and when my life has been put in danger because it is what he wants to do, that is wrong. Speed limits are posted for a reason. i am not attacking you past, just stating my own reality. a race will happen in a split moment. and no matter what you do, you can never have a "safe race."

take control of your ethernet router

First you must set-up a password for your router (don't use names or dates). If the child has set-up the password for the router, take the modem to work and to bed with you until the child gives  you  the password. Most routers have a section where one can  enter in specific down times(turning off  and on the router), and  an another section to check to see when the last time someone was on the web. I can't tell you how to set-up your router because every router is different, but you can read the manual or hire an expert in this field to set it up for you.

speed racing

Instead of getting tickets they should have to take care of people in nursing homes brain dead or other ones in there due to selfish reckless behavior.

dr phil you pick the dumbest replesentatives for street racing its funny but only sucky cars go 100 i know dominic personally is car is slow i raced him in my crappy truck and beat him i cant wait for this on monday dude and put it on myspace and you tube 100 is nothin
you really think that this is a joke? you think its funnny that your 'crappy truck' could beat dominics car. well since you know dominic, i know trais and he is one of my best friends.  he is one of the best kids around, he had never done anything to harm anyone in his whole life, but one stupid decision lead to this disaster. you wouldnt think that dr. phil picks dumb representatives for his show if you were to have your best friend taken away from you for a matter of months, not knowing what he's going through. great people make stupid choices, and when it happens to someone that you know its serious. i dont support trais for his accident, but what he has done in response is amazing. not to many kids would have done what he does on a daily basis. so i sugest you tell dominic to change his life before he ends up in a horrible life changing situation. just a thought...dont be ignorant kid.

Susan's concerns for her son

Susan stated that she was concerned for her son's safety, but not once did I hear her say she was concerned for the safety of those her son might kill.
