It’s no surprise that teens engage in reckless activities, but kids today are doing much more than sneaking a drink of alcohol. The newest trends can be deadly for your kids -- from street racing to car surfing. Dominic, 18, is obsessed with illegal street racing, and his friend, Justin, boasts that he’s driven 147 mph on the highway! Dominic’s mother, Susan, fears for his safety, but doesn’t know how to control him. Can Dr. Phil get the boys to put on the brakes? Then, 17-year-old Trais was street racing when he accidentally killed a wheelchair-bound mother of two in front of her children. Don’t miss his strong message for Dominic and Justin. And, meet a mom who worries that her 13-year-old daughter spends more time in a virtual online world than in the real one. Can Dr. Phil help the girl return to reality? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Been Thinking

I haven't read all the posts and I did miss part of the show, so maybe this has already been brought up but just in case in hasn't here goes.

Who is insuring this wonderful young man?  And who is paying for it? I venture to guess his mother, since he doesn't appear to be able to earn the money for his car much less the insurance.  I can't even imagine what the rates would be for an 18 year old with a sports car and 2 tickets.  Perhaps after this show airs his insurance company will do the right thing and drop him like a hot potato.

If we are going to hold teens responsible for their driving choices, lets spread it around.  How about the elderly who continue to drive even with failing eyesight, hearing and loss of mobility.  What about the soccer moms and the business men that are multi-tasking while they drive?  What about eating while we drive?  We all take driving for granted and we can't expect our children to take driving seriously when we don't.

Great show

One of the more inspiring shows  dr phil..  great guests and show.  I was so sad for the brother of the woman who was killed... I just about starting crying when I saw him crying just before the break... how terribly sad for him and her children.   I hope they shut those guys down.  Horrible thing for kids to be doing, but it seems to be just another one of many things that kids don't care about any more.

I posted comments prior to watching the show and now I have a different comment.

Dr. Phil is so right when he said that if the mother KNEW or had signs that her son was behaving in this manner, "it is her responsibiliity to "stop" it for the sake of her son and those he could harm or kill.".

I would never NOT do all I could do to prevent this behavior.  Looks like to me that the mother is "afraid" to say to her son what he needed to hear.  Why do parents keep quiet and then turn to Dr. Phil to do it for them?

Society is BLESSED to have Dr. Phil speaking for those who can't or won't.

God bless you Dr. Phil

You have to ALSO remember some things just happen for the sake of happening. No matter IF this particular family 'just happen to extend' their sons curfrew an extra 2 hours or not. When its our time to go, its our time to go. Unfortunately its the simply, yet harsh fact and reality of the situation...

I can remember, even today like it was yesterday, it was now 8 yrs ago when our hockey team was ready to take to the ice when one our our team members was running late for the game. He was a nice, quiet person and an excellent team/hockey player, a popular kid in high school as well. It just happen that, THAT SPECIFIC night he was out driving with a girl (who was also a good friend of mine, a popular and attractive girl in school) when they were coming into town, she was driving at the time, it was a regular 1/2 ton drunk and they were on a gravel road and connects to a normal asphalt road when she hit some 'pot holes' I guess you could call them, it was a good stretch of these pot holes in the road that IF you hit them you could lose control of the vehicle that you were driving. The poor guy who's real name was Trevor just recovered from a BAD broken leg injury and was so excited to come back to play hockey with all his buds, when my other friend who was a female and her real name is Jennifer lost control of the truck on the gravel road when she came across these pot holes in the road. As a result she lost control, the truck left the road and Trevor was thown from the truck, as it happened by amazing luck the truck happened to roll on 'him' after he was thrown from the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Jennifer did survive the accident and to this day she is a great individual who is married and Im sure still thinks of that night.

We were all just about ready to take to the ice when the news came to use that our good friend and teammate was killed in a truck accident. I instantly remember just standing up at the time and feeling my grip on my stick when I heard what happened. All I could do was look down at the ground, staring at nothing and just being empty inside, I guess I didnt know what or how to feel as it was the first friend I ever lost and to hear it that way before going out on the ice infront of alot of people.....

I guess the point of the story is that you never know when or how it can happen. Vehicles are and can be a deadly weapon, even if the intentions are purely innocent. It was just a bad situation and a good friend who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I know I'll never get the opportunity to celebrate another goal with him or another championship and that really sucks. Life is so precious and yet the human body so fragile.. I just with street racing punks would realize this.....

I have to date lost 4 GOOD FRIENDS due to accidents in cars/trucks and Im still only so young myself. Even for myself I had a close call when me, my brother, my mom, and my dad were actually driving back from the USA (Montana) Great Falls actually, to Calgary, Canada. We flew from there because the flights to Virgina were sooo much more affordable but because of the time of the flight we were all so tired, that all I remember was falling asleep in the back seat, and the a few 'brief' flashes or memories and then waking up hanging/suspended in my seatbelt. As it turned out we ALL fell asleep including my mother who was driving, to make a long story short, she happened to wake up just as the car was going into the ditch, swerved too hard, came back on the double lane, lost control went in the middle ditch of the 4 lane - seperated highway, the car started to roll repeartly and continued to roll and came to a stop ALL the way on the other 2 lanes of the highway that were going the other way. JUST by sheer luck no vehicles or semi tracker trailer trucks were coming at that time or we ALL would of been killed instantly. As it happen we all survived, even my mom who's neck was wedged between the steering wheel and the windshield... Thank-god cause it sooo simply could have all gone soooo bad for all of us...........

When its your time, its just your time. That's it, that's all. Nothing more I guess I can say.

"There's no smart way to be stupid!"

This is my new signature for everything.

People that street race annoy me because they don't think about other people. It's all about them. There is this video on YouTube with a guy going almost 214mph on Pheonix freeways and he thought he was cool because no one was around. One day these people will kill someone.

These kids are so stupid it's unbelievable. This is typical of this generation.

what???

Quote From: nesquik

this topic hits home. my sons father, roger, is an illegal street racer. he is an adult and, since I am not in the relationship anymore, what he does with his life is his business. However, when my son gets into that car it is my business. Roger refuses to drive normally, and obey speed limits. He has picked up my son, gotten mad at me, and ripped out of my driveway throwing rocks and gravel, revving up his engine, flooring the pedal and screeching his tires all the way down the street. I have also been in the car and said to slow down. In his retaliation, he decided to go 120 miles an hour on the freeway, with me and my son crying. I am afraid of my son's life every weekend he gores with his father, i do not want to keep him away from his father, because he loves him, but I'm not sure what i can do.
How on earth are you letting this happen??  Why aren't you taking steps to get the chile removed from his custody?  Do something you fool!

Street Racing Penalties

I am a Canadian, living in the Province of Ontario. After an escalating amount of death, injury , etc. our Provincial government took quick, decisive action. If common sense doesn't tell drivers that using a 3,000 lb potential weapon that kills is wrong, maybe stiffer legal penalties would.

The basics of our new law is this:

Anyone driving on any street, highway, road, anywhere in the province and going 50km per hour (approx. 23 mph) over the posted limit is considered to be a street racer.

Prior to conviction (ie. as soon as the person is ticketed), their vehicle is impounded for 7 days.

Their license is suspended for 90 days.

The minimum fine for first offense is $2,000.

That means that they must find their own way home from wherever they received the ticket. They must not only pay the minimum fine, but also the towing charges and impound fees. They must go to court and could face fines of up to $10,000 dollars.

Not to mention what their insurance rates are going to look like, and that's if anyone will insure them.

Maybe if the street racers were hit hard enough in the pocketbook they would either learn that this is not acceptable behaviour or be unable to afford to drive a car and the problem would be solved.

I am a retired Emergency Room nurse and have seen the results of high speed collisions on the human body. Perhaps the people who adhere to the" sport" of street racing should have to see these results in person. The nearest morgue would be a good place to start.

12/03 Shocking Teen Trends

I am only 15 minutes into the show and my blood is boiling. I cannot believe Dominic's mom bought him 2 of the exact same cars that he could race. The first time I think she could get away with saying "I just did'nt know" but she has no excuse for the purchase of the second car. If and when her son dies or kills someone, she will have to think about the fact that she was an accessory to either her son's or that person's death.

I think this would be a good idea in the states too.  If MADD can get things done about drunk drivers then there's no reason why this can't be taken care of too.  I certainly hope something gets done about it.  If people aren't going to police themselves then I guess the government will have to.  *shakes head*
