You've heard the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But what happens when someone posts malicious comments about you on the Internet? This trend, known as e-vengeance or cyber bullying, can have deadly consequences. Thirteen-year-old Megan Meier committed suicide after being taunted on MySpace by “Josh,” whom she believed to be a cute teenage boy. Unbeknownst to her parents, Ron and Tina, Josh’s profile was fake, which they believe was created by an adult neighbor to monitor Megan. Was this a case of freedom of speech, or harassment? A state senator proposing anti-cyber-bullying legislation and a First Amendment attorney weigh in. Then, Colorado councilwoman Sandy Tucker made national headlines when she posted a controversial joke online. When the mayor asked her to remove remarks he considered offensive, Sandy refused and then resigned. She doesn't feel the need to apologize and says people need to lighten up. Holly lives in Sandy's town, and joins the show via Web cam to tell the former councilwoman why the joke is no laughing matter. Plus, meet a man who says he's constantly taunted by racist slurs while playing Xbox Live. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Oh come on

These people who are claiming to want action because somebody is making racial remarks,.....does that in anyway compare with what was done to that beautiful young lady.  Why don't they resign from the game and start a new name to use the site.  How is he spending thousands of dollars on Microsoft?  You see how right I am - it is now a civil rights violation...on come on - did they print out any of these revolting messages?  As far as civil rights, it was the civil rights of the parents of the young lady who hung herself, to be able to raise her to adulthood, and have the ability to protect her from insane people.  What a world, what a world are we living in.

Responsibility

I am 68 y.o. I have always told my children the best offense can be silence in terms of bullying.  The object of bullying is to get you to respond. It take 2 to make a fight.

I have been in chat rooms that teens and early twenty somethings log into senior chat rooms and say absolutely filthy things.  I can just see the fools who do this idiotic stuff laughing hysterically if I or other get upset.  We either ignore the person or log off.  The internet does not rule my life. Before this technology started, wether it be a letter or phone call, I'd ignore it unless it was threatening harm.  If it was a threat, I'd call the police.

These people get off on your being hurt and responding.  Perhaps this poor child would still have been alive, had she told her mom what the guy was saying and she could have responded "I'm,            mom,

and now you are dealing with me. Now fool what do you have to say.  If more slurs came back, I'd log off and delete all messages and block incoming messages from that person.

Unfortunately, kids do not alwasy tell their parents what is going on so the parent can respond.

to combat this, the computer should be in the living/family room. If that doesn't work disconnect the internet because your child's life is worth it.  You can always turn it back on in another month and use as different email and user name.

personal experience

i kno that cyberbullys/stalkers or whatever you call it should be held accountable for every action they take.

im a 31yr old married man & have my own cyberbully/stalker. they post fake pictures of me (edited photos) holding penis(s) instead of guitars, paste my face of some dude with a diaper ect. then make myspace pages of me, photobucket account dedicated to holding edited pictures of me with captions.

i personally have 20+ fake sites claiming im homosexual, calling me names, & giving out my address.

they have made fake ebay accounts to bid on our ebay items & even a photobucket & youtube site.

my wifes rear windshield was busted out & at the time i didnt kno why or about all the sites & comments.

i have a feeling i know who it is but i know i have a short temper so i try to avoid the places they go in fear that ill get into a fight.

im not usually a complaner but they other day they made a site claiming to have hacked my wow account (worldofwarcraft) to rip people off.

they have made fake profiles even claiming im a gay racist who hates gays, latinos & blacks.

of course thats not the case.

since this been going on i been getting the headaches i used to get when i was younger & would like information on numbers to call to report this & have this squashed or whatever. i been on my local sherrifs office site & had seen nothing on it.

cyber bullies and free speech

I don't agree that people should be prosecuted for bullying someone online provisionally.  Obviously when threats are made that is definitely something that should be a penalty for.  But for just calling someone names??  No way.  If you would hang yourself because someone called you a bad name and said that they no longer want to be your friend, that is a very unstable person in the first place.  If the emails and the online messages are so emotionally damaging to those people, don't read them.  You can block people from your email, from your "My Space", "Facebook" what have you....so do that, don't try to prosecute them.  That would mean any bad name you have called anyone in your life should be prosecuted and charged with a crime and that is a trample on our freedoms.  I think we need to be careful what we propose for these situations.  I am a caucasion, also a wife and a mother.  I have been called white trash and other such things while playing games online...that does not constitute me charging them, or becoming so senstive to kill myself.  We need to realize that we have the power to shut off the computer and spend time with those who love us and friends who are in our presence who uplift us, instead of conversing with strangers and bullies online.  We need to get back to our families and shut off the computers!!

Oh come on

Quote From: mupine67

After watching the first 5 minutes of this show, I was convinced that if this so called mother loved her daughter and had been more supportive this would not have happened. The mother is really really cold.

I have a 13 year old daughter myself. If this had to happen to my daughter my love and support would have averted anything like this. Besides my daughter is so loved by her parents that she has no need to look for love else where. Anyway, these so called parents who shouldn't have kids in my opinion should have put a block on the internet like we have.

Who fault is this really???????

You are a very lucky person as it is obvious that you have not buried a child of yours , as I have...the pain, the devestating pain is beyond belief.  Was I to blame because my 22 year old son drove with great speed? Shame on you be cruel to these parents.  Be careful because life can throw you curves that are unbelievable.

01/08 Cyber Bullies

Being in a situation where I am under constant supervision of all my actions while earning my Elementary Education degree, I can sympathize with the woman who posted the joke on-line.  The education department is constantly telling it's students that they are not allowed to have web pages or post anything about themselves.  In fact at another school a student was removed from the education department because she was on-line in a Halloween costume....a HALLOWEEN COSTUME!!! This is absolutely ridiculous that people think they have the right to tell others what they are allowed and not allowed to do just because of their professional position.  I was told that if any of my professors saw me at a bar  I could be removed from the education department.  I'm clearly old enough to go to the bar and have a drink if I want to but they are taking that right away from me.  Further more, I think that if you can't laugh at yourself then you have a real problem.  If you can't tell the difference between a joke and someone actually making slanderous remarks against you, you have a lot to learn about this world.  I think that this country needs to get its priorities straight.  There are several people in the world who are actually doing harmful things to others in these types of professions but they are so worried about those of us who are not that they miss things and we have children hanging themselves because of people who really are doing awful things in this world.

agree but disagee

Quote From: purple82

I have 2 teenagers and we have talked about "cyber bullies" and we agree that it is nonsense. My kids know that it occurs in "cyberspace" and therefore it isn't real...they just ignore it.  The media has made a frenzy over this.  If it's a big concern; then parents need to take control of the computer.
easier said than done when your cild waks into school the next day & evferyone is pointing & laughing because of a sexual lie that circulated the ngt before on myspace 'as a jke'. Kind o hard for a 13 yr. old to focus on studies when this is going on ad nauseum.

When Is Enough Enough

I 100% agree that there needs to be a law dealing with cyber bullies. Not to long ago I went through a similar situation with my 14 year old daughter. Thank God it did not have the same out come. We had a neighbor who actually started stalking my daughter calling her at all hours of the day and night. After contacting the family several times it finally stopped. Everything was calm for a couple of months, then the myspace garbage started. Thankfully I had put the pieces together, and once again confronted the mother and her daughter. Of course they denied every bit of it, however the account was deleted as I was on the phone with her. Amazing what happens when you threaten police action and being able to trace their url. The problem is we shouldn’t have to threaten we should be able to take action against the sick people that harass and hurt our children.

My heart and prayers go out to this family. May you find peace and comfort in the Lord.

How  can a mother blame this poor woman after losing her daughter, You must be the most insensitive person I've ever heard of  what about  the responsibility  of that jerk who created all of this on an innocent child.

don't be too quick to throw away your freedoms

I know that one's automatic emotional response to occurrences like these is to say that the government needs to step in and regulate communication on the internet, however it is important to sit back and think about the full implications of such a thing.  Why are we as Americans so eager to throw away everything that has made us the most envied nation on earth?  Why is our answer to everything that the government needs to regulate or make a law?  Where has the idea of personal responsibility gone?  It is not the government's job to regulate morality.  It is the job of each individual to regulate and control themselves, and it is the job of each parent to instill morals and a sense of responsibility towards one's fellow man into their children.  Do we really want the government controlling every aspect of our lives?  Why are we not more concerned with protecting our precious freedoms?  Why are we so eager to hand them over to our government?  Are we really incapable of controlling ourselves and therefore need the government to step in and do it for us?
