You've heard the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But what happens when someone posts malicious comments about you on the Internet? This trend, known as e-vengeance or cyber bullying, can have deadly consequences. Thirteen-year-old Megan Meier committed suicide after being taunted on MySpace by “Josh,” whom she believed to be a cute teenage boy. Unbeknownst to her parents, Ron and Tina, Josh’s profile was fake, which they believe was created by an adult neighbor to monitor Megan. Was this a case of freedom of speech, or harassment? A state senator proposing anti-cyber-bullying legislation and a First Amendment attorney weigh in. Then, Colorado councilwoman Sandy Tucker made national headlines when she posted a controversial joke online. When the mayor asked her to remove remarks he considered offensive, Sandy refused and then resigned. She doesn't feel the need to apologize and says people need to lighten up. Holly lives in Sandy's town, and joins the show via Web cam to tell the former councilwoman why the joke is no laughing matter. Plus, meet a man who says he's constantly taunted by racist slurs while playing Xbox Live. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/08 Cyber Bullies

Quote From: gina_canada

I find it rather funny that in the United States, you can have a President that can participate in acts of adultery and still remain in office yet a woman that posted a joke is no longer part of council??? Come on now. I found the joke funny and actually I fell into some of those categories that she wrote about and it didn't offend me. Why are we so sensitive about some things yet oblivious to others. And Dr.Phil.....tsk tsk tsk you dropped the ball on this one. It was a joke just a JOKE get over it and let's learn to deal with issues like the other topics you had on the show that are serious and dangerous to society. With all the heart ache that is going on in our world today...have a little laugh, but first of all we need to be able to laugh at ourselves.
AMEN!!!! soooo true!!

Dr Phil, I just watched the piece on the city council woman who resigned because of the joke. That is so silly , has our world really come to this. Everyone has to be aware of their surroundings every moment and not laugh because you are scared of offending someone. I am a 29 year old, college graduate, married , mother of two, and I am also a blond. Jokes are intended for one purpose to make people laugh. Should the dumb and easy Blond jokes be offensive to me?????

RE: Cyber Bullies

The parents (Meirs) although the money is not the goal should file a wrongful death suit in court, if they cannot get these people on criminal charges they may win,and at least could win the death suit and it would publically declare the persons accountable . I think it is a tradgedy that this sort of crime can happen and no one has to answer for it . A person on the message board stated ( people should not take things to heart ) are you serious? That was a child involved arent we as parents, adults and citizens responsible for making sure children are safe, There is an old saying (IT TAKES A VILLAGE)Etc. My heart goes out to the Meir family.

I noticed that when the people were bitching about the politician's post  they kept showing a response that read: "your an idiot". BUAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is a person who writes "your" an idiot instead of the correct "YOU'RE" an idiot any LESS an idiot than the person they're calling an IDIOT????????????

If you don't know the difference between YOUR and YOU'RE, then you really should avoid the written word.

I agree, the irony of that post was just oozing all over the place.

01/08 Cyber Bullies

My teenage daughter was cyber bullied by an ex-boyfriend who broke up with her then 6 weeks later wanted her back. When she refused he started in on her. The comments were  vicious and cruel all with the intent of making my daughter believe she had no worth, no value, no friends and on and on. She learned how to sign in  online but to set her status so it looked as though she was off line. Then he simply went to e mail. She deleted him completely out of her computer and eventually it did stop.

As a mom I was blown away at how awfully a young man will speak to a young lady. Call me naive. I have since learned alot and am much wiser as is my daughter. Yes bullying has been around forever and will continue to be. I don't know what we can do except to support our kids and work to build them up.

Consequently one year later he found out she was at a friend's house for an overnight and he asked to come over to speak with her. She agreed and received an apology from him with nice comments intended to build her up We are both skeptical as to whether it was genuine or not but he did take the time to meet with her nonetheless.. She is forever grateful for that and it did go along way in helping her let go of it all but she still refuses to be around him or have anything to do with him(thank God). But even with the apology she struggles with low self esteem and self doubt. Once the words have been said they cannot be taken back. The damage is hard to erase.

The internet is just another way to communicate and there are those people who'll be rotten to others just as they would using a phone or other device but being anonymous raises the level of cruelty as well as the  nerve of many.

This mother and daughter did a truely horrible thing. The law should punish them in some way for the this cyber bulling. However, and I hate to say this, Meghan and her parents should have been more cautious on the Internet. You never know who people are on the web and it can be very dangerous to get too close. Too many teenagers are too easy going on the web, giving their names and personal information, just to make friends. This whole horrible situation shows what a horrible price children and their parents can pay.

cyber bullies

"This situation is just awful, this girl, Megan was being exploited by a neighbor pretending to be a 13 year old boy.  The neighbors daughter and Megan were freinds and their relationship had slowed down!  This happens  throughout life we have our friends that are with us only a short time, then we have friends for a lifetime, all of these relationships can slow down and even become non-existent due to life itself.  The neighbor  could have gone to Mrs. Meier and had a mother-to-mother conversation instead of taking matters into the room of a 13 year old child..  We as mothers get curious for all kinds of situations with regards to our children.  Because they are just that chilren!!!!!!!!!  It is our responibilities as adult role models to use our better judgemen...   The death of this little girl could have been prevented.  I hope that justice and legal action/laws are put in motion for this case. My prayers r with Megan who looks down upon us from a better place..                                                       Miss Fuentes

If the man playing X-Box Live doesn't like how he's being treated there, HE SHOULD STOP PLAYING IT.  There are alot of places I don't feel comftorable or where I'm not treated in a way I feel I should be treated.  However, I don't go to those places and then complain.  Furthermore, how old is that man and he's crying because he's not treated well while playing video games?  That's a little pathetic.  Granted, no one should be told the things that man has been told.  But how many times does he have to touch a stove before he knows it's hot?
