Girls dancing on bars half-naked, passed out on the beach, hugging the porcelain … these are photos posted for all to see on the Web site Facebook, in a group called Thirty Reasons a Girl Should Call it a Night. These shocking and provocative pictures are supposedly submitted by the women in the photos themselves. The women say they love to have fun, and this is a way to bond with other girls just like them. But are there unforeseen consequences to letting the public behold you at your worst? Dr. Phil speaks with women on both sides of this debate. Jasmine is the moderator for the group Thirty Reasons and says, although she’s responsible for taking down questionable photos, she hasn’t found one yet! Amanda and Norma are incensed that women would degrade themselves in this way. Hear from the president of a company who uses Web sites like Facebook and MySpace to weed out potential employees. Could documenting your good time on the Internet become your biggest regret? Then, a teen who loves to drink says criticism of Thirty Reasons just reinforces the double standard of gender inequality. What do Dr. Phil and the teen’s mother think? Plus, a mayor’s sexy photo has her town’s residents outraged. And, meet a substitute teacher who says he was unfairly fired from his job two times for what’s on his MySpace page. Share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

How far will it go?

I think that people need to think beyond the negative pictures and think about everything that goes into the typical internet profile.  Most profiles allow you to list your religious beliefs, your politcal beliefs, your zodiac sign, your sexual orientation, and blogs.  Well, how much of this is fair game for a corporate recruiter or for HR?  I think that its sad that you cannot even put how you feel about politics or that you are man-seeking-man on a profile for fear that you will be discriminated against.  We may say that oh, no one will use that, well, why not?  Its on your profile right?  So, what if a conservative company that donates to a Republicans political campaign decided we don't want to hire liberal Larry, or a secretly Gay-hating HR rep says I don't want to hire Homosexual Harriet.  I believe that technology has allowed us to express ourselves, however, societal standards is not putting a damper on that as well.  To the FCC and the Old Fashioned Crew!   Because they are winning the battle of freedom of expression...

Internet Mistakes

I'm not here to rip anyone apart or anything, just to speak my mind. Hopefully regain some respect for 20-something year old college women everywhere.

I'm 22, yes I go out and have fun. It very rarely ends with my head, or my girlfriends heads stuck in a toilet or passed out with writing on our bodies. If the night did end like that, I don't think any of us would find it funny to post pictures of it on facebook. I like to remember fun times with friends, not see pictures and say I don't remember this but it looks hilarious. Employers and colleges see everything [on the internet] whether we like it or not. These are the years that shape our futures!

Basically, it is just poor judgement and shows how young these women really are. I kind of feel bad for the mother, she clearly doesn't have control over her underage daughter. Also, ADHD and depression are no excuse for her behavior. I have them both as well and have not acted like her.

Ian of FIRE

I understand writing-up a teacher for allowing access to the f word, but when it comes to nudity in an artform, should a museum coordinator be fired for showing the statue David to a group of kids on a field trip?  They are both artforms.Should a health class teacher be fired for showing nudity in health class?

It's a shame that an employer can be so suspect of a person's work ethics that he has to check out a Facebook/Myspace profile, but if someone doesn't do something now, everyone will be fired for something an employer doesn't feel is right.  Who will be left to work?

In Canada, an employer cannot have access to your age while in a job interview, but that same employer can go online and find your age there.  Is that right?

The Internet is a tricky beast, and I wouldn't think that I could be fired for anything I've done, but who's to say that my employer won't read this post, find something wrong with it, and fire me?

Mixed Emotions.

First of all I would like to say that I know Mary, And I also am 18 and go to her school.

I dont really have a one sided opinion because I can see about both sides.. HOWEVER I do feel that the other girl she was fighting with was not at fault. Mary was arguing with someone online. Im sure that Amanda was not the perfect one in this situation. It takes two to fight so Im sure that she was also saying things that were not aired.

Another thing I would like to say is employers, Sure they can use it to look at profiles but that doesnt change someone. I know people who are older then I am who have sucessfull careers in the work force and can have fun drinking. Just becasue you post pictures of this shouldnt reflect on how you are going to be when you are in the process of getting hired. It is almost like an invasion of privicy.

I find it funny how I also checked my facebook and looked up guy groups about this topic and found numerous and nothing was said. So why is it that when A female group is on facebook that something is said. Drinking is good, bad, and ugly.  So what if people post pictures. If its not concerning you why should it matter. It shouldnt.

As for the other part of the show. That teacher, Ian, He is in a band.. BIG DEAL! He didnt bring songs and post sites. Then when he took off the language and got the job back wicked! But if people are still going to go on his site and watch his videos and listen to his music than thats them. He should be penalized for writing songs and having to worry about what he says or does.

posting info on the internet.

The point was definetely made on the show that what people do with their lives behind closed doors is completely up to them, which I completely agree with, but everyone forgot to mention that the internet isn't by any means "behind closed doors"! That's the last thing it is. Putting information about your personal life online is making it available to the whole world, not everyone in the world other than your future or current employer! Who says you can't be in a band or drink alcohol without posting info about it online? No one is saying that you can't put the information out there; the only thing Dr. Phil is trying to say is that it's fair game for employers to take into consideration what they come across online when hiring or firing. Your freedom of speech is important, but the employers have freedoms as well, and one of those is their ability to hire who they choose!

big words

Quote From: brittanyanne6

Amanda tries way too hard to make herself look intelligent. She tries to use big words and talk down to the other girls to try and make herself above them. She seems like a very dull and judgemental person. It is not the most brilliant idea to post pictures of yourself like they are, but that doesn't make them any less of a person. And employers shouldn't be using these pictures to judge a person on their work abilities!! This is what they are doing in their personal time, not while they are supposed to be working. I mean c'mon. But if these girls want to post pictures of themselves when they are drinking so that they can have a laugh and make other people laugh at them being idiots. WHO CARES!!
she may use big words but she is right . when people post these pictures they will be judged when  they are seen. Also why do i think i would see her pictures on there. she sounds like  the 17 year old 'i didn't want to work for a company who judges from a picture.

This while facebook thing

This is just insane.  These girls are having fin and I understand that.  The thing is that they are doing harm to themselves.  Not only are they being poked fun at behind their backs, maybe the idea, but job employeers, and professors all have the capability of viewing these profiles.  These pics are doing harm to their future employment.  I know I would not want to hire a young lady who has a pic of herself posted for public viewing while she is hugging a toilet or passed out in the hotel hallway.  Just shows that their judgement is comprised at this one point whats to say she didnt do that last night and showing up at the office today.

As for the argument about the whole men being able to get away with--I dont see their pictures up on the internet.

Teacher shouldn't be fired.

Personally, I think firing the substitute teacher was outlandish and ultimately ridiculous. What someone does in their spare time and what they choose as a profession are completely different matters. Firing this man for his band's limited explicit content in a few of his own songs was blown way out of the water. Being a kid in high school, I can say from relation that kids nowadays get way worse influence from television and other, far worse, music and websites.

Watching an evening drama shows more of a naked woman than his video had, with much more risque undertones and influences. The music children listen to is much worse than what he put into his song. Have you ever listened to most rap songs? They clearly give off more negative vibes than this man's hobby. As far as I can tell, he kept his job and his band very seperate- a kid just so happened to wander onto his music page. If they're in high school and finding his music, they're at an age where they've already been overexposed to vulgar language and "human anatomy". It's gauranteed their peers use this language far more than the teacher had. There was no excuse to fire him- if parents are so concerned about their children being exposed to this and having negative influences from the teacher to their kids, put them in private! All teachers have biases and private lives. Should one teacher be fired because they go to the bar every friday night? Should another teacher be fired because they enjoy skydiving? Both are far more lethal than a curse word, or a woman's breast.

Hiding kids from vulgarity is like trying to hide them from the sun, especially in public school. It was out of line to fire him.

CALM DOWN :)

what people write, and the photos that they post of themselves on the internet is their own business!! it's not necessary whatsoever for a person to preach their judgements to these girls. if it doesn't affect you in any way then LEAVE IT ALONE. it really doesn't matter, the facebook group was not meant to be taken seriously. and if one day a certain person doesn't get hired because the employer saw photos of them on the internet, then that will just have to be a lesson that THEY can learn from. it's not anyone's business but theirs.

:)
