Girls dancing on bars half-naked, passed out on the beach, hugging the porcelain … these are photos posted for all to see on the Web site Facebook, in a group called Thirty Reasons a Girl Should Call it a Night. These shocking and provocative pictures are supposedly submitted by the women in the photos themselves. The women say they love to have fun, and this is a way to bond with other girls just like them. But are there unforeseen consequences to letting the public behold you at your worst? Dr. Phil speaks with women on both sides of this debate. Jasmine is the moderator for the group Thirty Reasons and says, although she’s responsible for taking down questionable photos, she hasn’t found one yet! Amanda and Norma are incensed that women would degrade themselves in this way. Hear from the president of a company who uses Web sites like Facebook and MySpace to weed out potential employees. Could documenting your good time on the Internet become your biggest regret? Then, a teen who loves to drink says criticism of Thirty Reasons just reinforces the double standard of gender inequality. What do Dr. Phil and the teen’s mother think? Plus, a mayor’s sexy photo has her town’s residents outraged. And, meet a substitute teacher who says he was unfairly fired from his job two times for what’s on his MySpace page. Share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Facebook??

Ok I have facebook and myspace. What I think that these girls are doing is making the rest of the female popluation look bad. Yes I have been drunk and I have the pictures to show it....But I keep them private or for friends only. Facebook and myspace should be used to find friends not show how stupid you can get!!

01/15 Internet Mistakes

I know at college as an eduation major we were taught to watch what we post on websites...especially facebook and myspace.com We were told many many times that future schools will search the internet and find those pictures. At the same time I know facebook has privacy setting that you can put where only your approved friends can see your photos. So yes I think they should be allowed to see what their employer does in the free time because what is stopping them from doing that during job hours?

Let them post as they wish

As someone who used to interview, make hiring and firing decisions, I say let them post as much as they want.  This type of material could be a valuable tool for potential employers.  I'm not sure I understand the logic of those who represent themselves negatively--for potential employers, potential friends, or anonymous web surfers...but at least these folks are represented honestly.  Rather than change their posting habits, maybe they should change their lifestyle habits, and then they'll have something to post that they can be proud of!

Internet Mistakes

What these girls are doing just really upsets me.  I'm 19 years old and first of all I don't drink, but when I do decide to start drinking, I don't want people to think that when I go out it's okay to take stupid pictures of me.  I don't want someone to abuse me just by taking stupid pictures and posting them of me on the internet and jeopardizing my career in the future.  I have had some great job oppurtunities (like the job I have now) and I don't want my future to be ruined.  I think that people should be smarter when they go out and "have fun". Theres a difference between "having fun" and "acting stupid".

I'm a teenager almost 20 years old, and I don't think this is okay or mature.

Privacy

What I kept hearing the people on the show saying was that what they did in their private lives should have no impact on their public lives.  Well - the minute you put something on the internet - it's not private anymore.  Once it's on the internet... it's on the internet for life.

01/15 Internet Mistakes

Quote From: jam21655

I feel that this is absolutly ridiculous.. What does this have to do with the image of women?  A. FACEBOOK CAN BE SET TO PRIVATE.... so only the people that you want to see your profile can. . . I don't think that it is a "huge mistake" ..and the girl who opposes this site seems like a complete straight edge snob ( not that she is but thats def how she comes off).. not everybody in the world cares about what other people think.. and that is the way it should be!  those who matter don't mind... and those who mind don't matter!  yes i agree that it might not be the smartest to post it in an area that would be available for everyone to see but that is why they make it private.  I don't understand why amanda is so worried about other peoples lives anyway. Worry about your own image and let others worry about thiers.

The point of the drunk girls facebook site is for everyone to see it... That page is not private.

Free Speech

Quote From: oldbatinredhat

I'm trying to figure out why some people are blasting the establishment for using what they can to get what they perceive is the best fit for their company.  Gimme a break people and help me clear up some confusion in my head.  IS there "private" life when you spread it publicly around the world on the internet?  What is private about that?   Where does private life stop and "public" life begin?  As for the substitute teacher.  YOU have the right to post and play whatever music you so choose.... and the school board has the right to determine what type of individual they want to PAY to work with their children.  What is so hard to understand about that?  Just because you are an "artist" doesn't give you a free pass in the world which says everyone has to want you employed in their district.  If you had a disability that was no "fault" of your own or a characteristic that was "not a choice" that was made, then I would be the first to stand up and say "They can't do that to you!!"  But you have rights and so do they under these particular circumstances.     Guess I'm just getting pretty tired of seeing self-seeking attention getters whining about their lot in life.

I was disturbed by the teacher's firing and also by Dr Phil's comment that "if you're slaughtering chickens and worshipping satan, don't I have a right as a parent to know that?"

Assuming that we are talking about public schools:  Teachers have a 1st amendment right to freedom of speech (including performing in a rock band) and freedom of religion (even something as outlandish as satanism.)  (Private schools can set narrower limits on students and faculty.)

Ian's "art" is not to my taste, but if we can fire him for it, then we can also fire a teacher who appears as Shakespeare's Richard III and seduces a grieving widow.  If you have a right to disapprove the  hiring of a satanist teacher, then you also have the right to disapprove the hiring of ANYONE with whose beliefs you disagree.  Look at the rhetoric about Mitt Romney's religion -- shall we also not hire Mormons because some people think it's a non-Christian cult?  Muslims because we're afraid of terrorism?  Where does it end???

I would urge Ian to contact the ACLU.

01/15 Internet Mistakes

I think that anyone has the right to put  what they want on their myspace. You need to know though, that people are going to judge you on what is on your facebook, or myspace. You also should know that anyone can see what is on your page. I think that people can put what they want on their pages, but be aware of the consequences that could come of it.
People do stupid stuff...its human nature, but only put it online if you are ready to be judged and ready to be critized.
Im a teenager, so i know what teens are up to these days, but  I dont know anyone who is stupid enough to put pictures of them acting stupid on their page for anyone to see. Parents like to be nosy and they like to check up.  If you are going to party, do it in private haha.

Internet Photos

I think if you are 21 it is fine to go out and drink but the whole deal with posting photos of yourself so drunk that  you use the bathroom on yourself it is so dumb. Why would you want to risk putting pictures out their that anyone can see. They were talking about how men are allowed to go out and party and drink and take pictures and things.. Well we woman have class... well most of us!!! If men want to do that let them we don't need to do everything they do. Girls say they get called Hoes and whores and all other kind of things well it would help if you didn't do things like post pictures of your self with your breast out of your shirts or your thongs hanging out of your pants. So pull your pants up and put your boobs away and then maybe you will get a better nickname.
