Girls dancing on bars half-naked, passed out on the beach, hugging the porcelain … these are photos posted for all to see on the Web site Facebook, in a group called Thirty Reasons a Girl Should Call it a Night. These shocking and provocative pictures are supposedly submitted by the women in the photos themselves. The women say they love to have fun, and this is a way to bond with other girls just like them. But are there unforeseen consequences to letting the public behold you at your worst? Dr. Phil speaks with women on both sides of this debate. Jasmine is the moderator for the group Thirty Reasons and says, although she’s responsible for taking down questionable photos, she hasn’t found one yet! Amanda and Norma are incensed that women would degrade themselves in this way. Hear from the president of a company who uses Web sites like Facebook and MySpace to weed out potential employees. Could documenting your good time on the Internet become your biggest regret? Then, a teen who loves to drink says criticism of Thirty Reasons just reinforces the double standard of gender inequality. What do Dr. Phil and the teen’s mother think? Plus, a mayor’s sexy photo has her town’s residents outraged. And, meet a substitute teacher who says he was unfairly fired from his job two times for what’s on his MySpace page. Share your thoughts here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Teachers

I agree that everyone needs to be careful about what they post on the internet but I disagree with your statement that the personal lives of teachers should affect their hiring and firing.  A teacher must be careful that anything questionable in their personal life is not available to students eyes but as long as it can no way affect students in or out of the classroom I see no reason to fire someone.  What goes on behind closed doors is no ones business but the people behind those doors.  There are plenty of people in many  professions that do things privately that some might not agree with and it is unfair to discriminate against them based on that.

Clueless in the Burbs

How sad, young girls wanting so much attention that they would post such demeaning photos of themselves.
Notice how most in the photos were unconscious, "what freedom!" .

Don't believe women's rights advocates had this "freedom" in mind when they lobbied for women's right to vote, right to abortion, and the right to join the military.

These teen Myspace pages are the poorly thought out tattoos of yesterday.

Did anyone see the second segment today with Mary and Amanda? I'm glad that Mary stood up for herself because it is hard when someone verbally attacks you uses "ten-dollar" words to make themselves look more intelligent than you. Don't get me wrong I don't agree with what Mary was saying but I think that Mary was being made to look unintelligent by Amanda. I've run into people like Amanda before, being a college student, I often meet people who spout big words and intellectually pleasure themselves in front of other people because it makes them feel good. EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION! I've learned at an early age if you run around jamming your opinions down everyones throat, people tend to not listen. I think if Amanda tones down her forceful dialect more people will listen to her. I agree with the point she was trying to make but the tactics she uses to get people on her side are a bit OVERBOARD. what do you think?
i agree with you 100% amanda wanted to start trouble.

I don't think that the substitute teacher/musician should have gotten fired.  I mean, he's not even a full time teacher.  I'ts not like he was forcing it on them in any way.

I totally agree that this individual should have been removed as a substitute teacher in our district.  I believe that educators are looked upon as role models for our children,  This person publicized his band and myspace so that students would of course check it out!!  The content was inappropriate and does not reflect the proper image.

When the district made the decision to no longer employ this person instead of removing the myspace content this person chose to allow a great debate, or unrest among students.  Students of the district began posting many inflamatory messages against the school district on the myspace page.  What a great lesson to teach the students.  I stand behind the District and only hope they become more active in making sure more of this type of activity doesn't occur!

As a parent it has become quite difficult to monitor our children's movements on the internet.  Both Facebook and Myspace need to somehow become more vigilant in what is posted on these websites. The monitor for Facebook that was on the show has no clue what is appropriate!  The problems with these websites along with the instant messaging & text messages have only just begun!

01/15 Internet Mistakes

Quote From: blade13

One's personal life and job life should definitely be separate.  An employer should NEVER invade one's privacy!  If you're worried about what they might think, then when they ask if you have a Facebook or Myspace account just tell them 'no'.  Just so everyone is clear AN EMPLOYER LOOKING AT YOUR MYSPACE AND USING IT AGAINST YOU IS AN INVASION OF PRIVACY AND THEREFOR UNETHICAL!

Furthermore, to the girl on stage who opposed the pics on Facebook, you need to get a  life of your own so you don't have to worry about what others do all the time.  Focus on yourself.

And to Dr. Phil,  i caught your statement about you would want to know if your child's teacher worshipped Satan or not.  This is what i say to you, I would be more worried about whether he was a child molester or had a criminal record.  The few Satanists i have met have been better people than MOST of the Christians i have met.  I know Satanists and other minority faiths are often belittled in the media, but people need to be seen as individuals not as stereotypes.  You should be above such prejudice.

Myspace and FaceBook are PUBLIC FORUMS, if you wouldn't put it in the Newspaper or on TV then don't put it on the net, that simple.
Consider, I'm only asking you to consider this now, you have applied for a job in a field where you are responsible for confidential and/or sensitive information, now most of us who have or do drink (I admit a bit too much sometimes), KNOW that alcohol tends to loosen the lips, and some black out and have NO IDEA what they might have said or done the night before, so you take pictures of this and post them, would you expect this particular company to hire you ?
I agree with you however about the Satanist comment, if they aren't bringing it into the classroom (I'm not sure about you, but here the expectation is, if it isn't a Private School, religion stays out anyway), then I don't care if the teacher worships Peter Rabbit, not my business.
We do have to realize though that the Net is PUBLIC and like in the real world, we will, good or bad, be judged on how we present ourselves, that is reality.

Commonsense is a good thing to have!

When I was seventeen I was very naieve about what I did.  I partied just like the young girl on the show.  When you are seventeen you don't think about your future and where you are going to be in five, ten or fifteen years.  I guess you are uncapable of thinking that far ahead.  I know that I regret my past and believe me, my past continues to haunt me.  Now that I am a mom I use common sense with the things I do.  So I guess the moral is don't do anything that you think may affect you in a negative way later on in life. Putting compromising pictures of yourself on the internet of yourself, whether it is all in fun and games, is not the smart thing to do.  You never know who is going to see them.  Don't look at just now, but look at the big picture before putting degrading photos of yourself for everyone to see. You never know who will see them.

01/15 Internet Mistakes

Quote From: karamel

"we do have to be aware of potential repercussions of our actions whether in the real world or online" i totaly agree people should be aware of there actions  we have to listen to our mind
I agree with everything that you said.  If you don't want it seen by employers keep it off the net.  That doesn't mean as Dr. Phil implied that you shouldn't be allowed to do it.  To use your example stripping at the local bar as a teacher is not a good idea but stripping at a private party and not posting it is your business.

The Word

So let me get this straight. This man got fired because he wants to let his band be open and want to be known for? Staying in the garage won't get you far in life." But this school finally relized that this wasn't the thing to fire him. So they wait for the appropriate time to fire him once again?

Whatever happen to the expression, "Freedom Of Speech"? Was this song meant by the four letter word to actually mean about sex? To "F**K Something".

Back then internet didn't exist. How could you know what this person is doing?
Did this school have permission to enter this "myspace site"?
What if he were to have moved the site and locked it with some sort of "login script"? He blocks the school's IP Address so they can not access it. Or he only allows certain members like an activation through e-mails?

The problem is that this guy got caught.

Making him get rid of the site in order to get his job back is really just bribing. Is life all just a bribe? Publishing files to the internet is not a mistake. It's more of an compassion, loving what you do.

Everyone has opinions and freedom of speech. Listen to the world's music today, I bet you there is over 70% of songs with one bad word in it.

This problem should be taken in consideration and not going to the exact picture. Go beyond the picture. Think of what other artists do.

01/15 Internet Mistakes

I feel that  if you are going to have a facebook or a myspace, you need to know what is and is not acceptable. im not going to lie, i have pictures of drinking on mine, however there are ways to hide your pictures so that the world doesnt see. you can make your profile, information, and pictures all private if you want to. for those who dont want to, that is your choice. there is something called freedom of speech and i think that everyone needs to remember that. as i highschool student you probably think that i dont know what i am talking about but i see boths sides to the story. i know that my mom wouldnt want to see pictures of me drunk and on the ground, or throwing up but my mom also knows i am a teen and in highschool. teens will make mistakes, its a fact of life. i know that half of the adults today used to get drunk at a young age, however they didnt have technology like we do nowadays where you can upload a picture in a second and also did not have websites such as facebook or myspace to post their pictures on. you may not like my opinion but i am sticking to it. if you want to exploit yourself thats your choice, just remember it could/ and probably will effect your future.

Ignorant!!

After watching the show today, I was disgusted. I can't imagine ever being that ignorant and naive. You can't expect the world not to judge you based upon all the information that is available. That's called good judgement. As an employer, that's called common sense. I have a Facebook page, it is set to friends only. I know that anyone can access my page if they really want to and use the information against me. That's why my birth year is not posted. I have purposefully left off vital information, so as to protect myself and still share personal moments with those of whom I care about. I use it to keep in touch with friends and family and show them what is going.  I strongly believe, as an employer, that I should be able to know about the personal life and history of any potential employee.
