Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: ksrose26

The topic is silly, every generation has their own style...  I must say that the hidden camera in the mall totally unfair.  Of course they would get treated no differently..it's a common site.     I would have liked to see the kids try to get hired for a job.  ( and not apply at mcDonalds)     They will grow out of it when it's time to get a job.   It's their style, let them express themselves.  ( I grew out of my punk stage.)

Yes...the voice of reason.

Now...not everyone grows out of it...I know a few permed poodle heads still.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: ingramashley23

I understand that its probably not the classiest way of dressing, and i personally think it looks tacky BUT

when did it start becoming alright for somebodys OPINION about what looks good... to become the law???.. What if people started wearing lamp shades on there head? and the mayor of some city didnt like it and decided to outlaw wearing Lampshades on your head in that city...If you dont like, dont look at it... Its not hurting anyone else, and if they cant find a job because they dont know how to dress, thats their problem, not ours... whats next? Women have to start wearing scarfs over their head to cover their hair because its too provocative to show your hair??  yep.. communism, thats exactly what this seems like.

I really like this post...

Yes...where does it end?

By and large we are talking about FABRIC being exposed, by way of boxer shorts.  As far as I know, there is no law on excessive cleavage.  That is SKIN.

What's wrong with this picture???

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: psunflower

I'm surprised that people feel any government agency should have the right to legislate how people dress.  If some are so offended by the apparel of others, I can only suggest that they not look at what offends their delicate sensibilities and ask themselves why they are allowing themselves to be so offended.  As I was watching the show, I noticed that one of the women on stage was wearing a rather large silver cross on a chain about her neck.  That silver cross could possibly offend a few people.  Perhaps there should be a ban on wearing any religious jewelry in public.  After all, someone, somewhere might be offended by it and we all know that religion has often started wars.  See how ridiculous things can get?  If one kind of attire is deemed offensive and is banned, then any attire which offends anyone can be banned.

The problem is not with the baggy pants.  The problem is with those who have nothing better to do than attempt to dictate to others how they should dress.  There are so many other more important issues with which people might concern themselves.

If some are so offended by the apparel of others, I can only suggest that they not look at what offends their delicate sensibilities and ask themselves why they are allowing themselves to be so offended.

That made me smile!

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: finaface

I would never accept anything to eat, from someone who is saggin'. We all happen to know that men will sometimes have drops of urine from their previous bathroom trip, or unfortunately whatever else (fecal matter) is on boxers that need to be pulled up repeatedly. I am sorry. I would definitely suggest to a manager to require a dress code involving a belt so that "bodily fluids" aren't transfered to hand that serve food, or any other service for that matter. People who are saggin' are shooting themselves in the foot. It will eventually get in the way of a career choice or educational preference.

You MUST be kidding me.

Hands are dirty period.  I'm more frightened of the microscopic life forms on shopping carts, myself.

PULL YOUR PANTS UP!!

Seems unlikley this generation can't see the obvious.  I am sure the boys with their pants 1/2 off would notice a girls bottom if she were showing it.  I think it is disrespectful to the general public to force us to see their underware.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: tc12212

I THINK THAT THE BAGGY PANTS IS NASTY. THEY SHOULD PUT THEM IN JAIL OR SOME TYPE OF FINE. THEY COULD HAVE GUNS OR OTHER WEAPONS  ON THEM. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE PARENTS NEED TO PUT A STOP TO. IF THE KI9D IS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 THEN THE PARENT SHOULD GET THE FINE AND THE KID PUT IN JAIL. THE COMPANY'S THAT ARE MAKING THE CLOTHS SHOULD ALSO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR.

ALSO WHY ARE WE THE PEOPLE OF THE U.S ALLOWING THE FOREIGNERS-NOT TO PAY FED. TAX'S. THEY SHOULD BE PAYING MORE THEN WE DO. THEY COME HERE AND TAKE JOBS AWAY FROM US. THEN WE ALLOW THEM TO NOT PAY TAXES. THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG . THE CREATE CRIMES AND IN MOST CASES LIVE LIKE NASTY PEOPLE. WHATS UP WITH THIS.

I think ignorant people who type in all caps should be fined.

Jail time would be icing.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: craziness1234

First of all I just want to say that the baggy pants look is a terrible look. No one wants to look at anyone's underwear. And when you have to walk with your hands in your pants to keep them up, that's just stupid.  I read that the pants being down below your a** started in prison and means you are available for back door action.  If that's the signal they want to give, so be it

I think they will look back and wonder

I agree that sometimes these boys can be intimidating the way they dress combined with the often times multiple peirceings and the tatoos covering much of their bodies. However, even if their boxers are showing, at least their butt is covered.  I think in later yeras they will laugh at themselves especially when they remember how "cool" they though they looked.(remember leg warmers?)

What really offends me and makes me worry is the young girls wearing pants so low, when they sit down the crack of their butt is there for all to see. Also, alot of times this is combined with the shirts that show their bellies and because the pant are so tight,  no matter how thin they are, there is fat hanging over. I am concerned with the message this sends to others about them. I interpret the message they are  send as ; you don't need to respect me, I don't even respect myself.

Let them express themselves...

Ok...everybody in every generation has their own "style"...and since when is it ok that we are forcing laws against those "styles".  Think back...there was the bell bottom days...there was the disco era...my day was the "huge hair" days.  Today it's just a little more risque than back in our day, but it's a PHASE...they will grow out of it on their own.  I don't see alot of people wearing bell bottoms still...wearing tight disco type clothes...we don't still use 3 cans of aquanet a week.  We all grew out of our phase.  It's a way they express themselves...so let them.  As long as it's not hurting anybody...if you don't like it - don't look.  Plain and simple.

I happen to have a teen age son.  He loves wearing this "style" for his own reasons.  Do I think it looks stupid? YES...do I laugh at it?  YES...but it's him.  I love him no less because of it.  He happens to be hispanic...which has NOTHING to do with it...there are blacks, mexicans, whites, EVERY RACE has this "style" and it in no way means they are "thugs", "gangsters", or "cons".  My son gets good grades, has never been in trouble with the law, and is very respectable of every body (but mom of course...).

Anyways...the point is let them outgrow it on their own.  We have enough other problems that our cops need to worry about and if we start another law for them to enforce that is basically ridiculous...that means they are not out there taking care of the REAL crimes that need their attention.

I remember leg warmers!

LOL

And...if I remember correctly...I also weaved little itty bitty ribbon through my barrettes and hung beads and feathers from them.

I was CUTE gosh darn it!  I dyed my Nikes pink too.  Don't you forget it.

Hmph.
