Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Where are the parents?!!!!!

I understand that a lot of parents work long hours and more than one job to take care of their children. I don't think that they should allow the government to control the purchases in the household. With this campaign about baggy pants that's exactly what is going to happen. it is the parents responsibility govern what their children wear and not wear. It is also, not the celebrities job to govern what these children wear and not wear and do and not do. Who is the adult in the household and who is the child?? The parents should the example for their children to follow. Don't leave it all up to the television.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: apilalas

how do you know all of the guys situations? you dont! you want to know why you dont, because you wont give the time of day to get to know them.

they could live in a bad place like alot of us or be poor like alot of us...you dont know so why hate them?

Yes. Of course. Because there's probably a medical condition wrong with a man who's not poor and decides to show his underwear to me and the rest of the world in public. They have "saggy-itus", or something like that. Really, is it all that necessary to grasp for such small and out-of-reach straws?

And you're right, I really don't want to give the time of day to a man that doesn't respect me enough to pull his pants up so I can't see his draws. You can take that any way you want to, but that's how I am. If a man is going to flash his underwear at me, I'm gonna walk the other way. And again, don't use the "poor kid" argument with me. I, too, have been born of the poor class. But i still have manners. So, sorry. It still doesnt work. I once moved with my family to another place so my mother could escape a bad boyfriend. We didn't have a lot of money and had to live in our car for a few days until mom found a mission. And during that time, at no moment did my brother decide we were so poor he had to flash his underwear to the world. So, really, not even a remotely good argument there.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: dzxwnb

I am a very educated 43yo black male. I'm totally against the sagging of pants on our young youths, regardless of race. If your an adult and chooses to wear your pants that way, that's your business because you are the one that looks stupid. I hope CA will pass a law banning the saggy pants, because it's needed here.

I told my 12yo nephew who I'm very much involved in his life. I informed him, that if i ever see his pants sagging. I will pull his pants up and around his chest with a belt, shirt tucked in and the bottom of his pants rolled up passed his ankles. Then we will go to the mall on a Saturday night and walk through during the time all of the other junior high and high school students are there. My nephew strongly understands i mean what i say and don't test me, because it will happen. He understands and told me that he will never wear his pants like that.

I feel any young male wearing their pants like that is demeaning to that culture and that individual. Another thing I'm tired of hearing, is black people pulling out the race card whenever something of this nature that involves more of one race is brought out in the media. Rev. Al Sharpton is so quick to pull the race card on topics that doesn't require one.

Another Veiw on Baggy Pants

I really enjoy the different veiws  on your show last night from your panel  about " Baggy Pants", I also want to praise you , because I really did not see you take sides with FOR or AGAINST because you showed you do not always have the answer to or for the problem, just a sounding board for the issue to aired .

Now here my personal veiw on the Baggy Pants debate, issue or whatever the title needed to be used to address the INSIDE ISSUES going on with BAGGY PANTS.

I have two(15/14) grandsons, one would chose too ALWAYS wear his pants sagging, but when it  is seen in my presence I immediately state" pull them up". HE gave me the looks in the beginning although I stay consistence with my value of it does not look presentable and it looks very disrespectful to ( me)your elders. The other grandson( they are cousins) tried it but he dosn't like to hear my speech , so he has his pant looking presentable when in my presents. Now do they always NOT sag, all I know is in our family it take all of us to help raise these young men.

Dr. Phil I also asked my grandsons " Why Do They  or Would They Wear There Pants Down So Low?

#1 reason I heard from (inside) them was.......It keeps possible punks or jerk from eyeing them, so they wear thier pants loose to not show anything for them to look at.My grandsons are allowed extra size pants, but sagging as to showing their rumps is not acceptable, they were taught by their moms early to TELL If anyone approach you inapproiately. #2  reason , I heard was to have room to stash illegal things.

this is unbelivable

hi i am an 18 year old male still in highschool and i think that this whole debate is getting way out of hand. i will admit yes i do wear baggy pants and they do hang down a little low below my waste but when i wear baggy pants my "butt" is covered by my long shirt. Some girls i have talked to in my school have said that the boxer shorts sticking out of you pants is a bit attractive to them. I dont think they should make this a law that would be a little too much. I also think that targeting hip-hop and rap for this "saggin" is not true i listen to many types of music and i have seen hard rock bands and other types of muscians wearing their pants low. It is a sterotype that if your pants go a little below the waste you are automatically thought of as a "thug". I realy think that people should be able to make there own decisions on how to dress but they should also make the decision of how low and how appropriate it is to wear your pants.

Back to Basics

Quote From: christalwilson

why are we so obsessed with whats i fashion today? since the beginning of time everyone from generation to generation has had a problem with whats in fashion at the time, and it goes away over time. With so many more important things going on in the world like war, hunger, child abuse of all kinds, homeless people, unemployment, poor educations, and so on and so forth how can we take any time out to focus on fixing who wears baggy pants?Man i wish people would put this much effort in curing famine, bettering the education system, teach people to value the life of others or Even finding a way to keep families from ending up on the street. But no i guess we can be true to human nature and focus on whats no big deal so we can cast a shadow on whats really important in the world.I am so sure those poor starving people all over this world also worry about seeing someones boxers after all that has to be what keeps them up all night not their empty stomachsPeople need to catch a clue, polticians pick these battles to fight so they don't have to explain why your kids don't have enough qualified teachers to teach them,or why crime is getting worse and the gangs run the streets. As long as we jump on the bandwagon and join in the drama or leaders get away with not fixing the real problems.

It's like football - in order for a team to win, you have to be good at tackling, passing & catching FIRST!

Same here - you let kids get away with sloppy, nasty dress habits - now they have no respect for anybody

including themselves or anything!  This generation has set the bar at an all-time LOW!  For us old guys,

we recall schools forcing girls  to kneel down and if their dress didn't touch the floor - they were sent home. Gradually, the rules are bent until they're non-existent - like today.  And what does this newer

generation have to show for it?  A bunch of losers that never knew "the agony of defeat" because it was

not fair to flunk 'em or have  them picked last for a baseball game.  They play music with effects that

"rock the house" - 3 blocks away.  They are killing each other at an alarming rate.  They care not about

the future and dislike the present.  When are blacks going to learn the teachings of Bill Cosby who lays

all the blame on blacks that are not taking advantage of the civil rights movement.  Folks died to be able

to vote, attend school, learn to speak English, get decent jobs.  As he says - "they are an embarrasment

to their race!  You sound just like them - blaming everything on the government!  Some things have to be

taught at home and in the community.  You can't send your kids off to school and expect the school to do

YOUR job of raising children.  My parents demanded excellence at home and wouldn't allow me to mis-

pronounce words in front of them!

Baggy Pants

I think that those who wear baggy pants out in public look rediculous!!! I mean come on  , if they want to show there underwear/ why don't they just go outside in them, instead of covering them with pants?!!! I don't like them,That's why they make belt's and  suspenders!!! I also oppose to women wearing low cut anything/ they are just asking for trouble.

The real issue with Baggy Pants

I felt prompted to leave a message about the "BAGGY PANTS ISSUE".

We, as Americans enjoy many rights that much of the earth's population do not have. There are however, many people that believe they can (by law?) can do anything they want, to whomever they want. People play LOUD music and destroy the neighborhood they live in. There is nothing wrong with playing whatever your brand of music you choose. The volume is the problem, the disregarding the rights that other people also enjoy and that is to live in peace. The peaceful people do not encroach on your freedom with their peace being too loud.

The issue with baggy pants. Most parent who saw a very young child running around with baggy pants feel the child is carrying a 'load' and would change the needed diaper/pants to take care of the matter. Children are to be controlled and taught until they reach such an age that they can make reasonable decisions on their own. If the child has a mental impairment, the age of training may be years later than 'normal' children. Yet, the parents are responsible for their children until they reach the age of majority or are able to be on their own.
It is clearly evident by these 'baggy pants' kids, they are not old enough to be on their own, so they must remain under reasonable adult supervision.
Just like a person would not parade around in the buff in public, go swimming with a tux on, climb Mt. Everest with a swin suit on, there is a place and a reason for every form of dress. Grossing people out in public is not expected nor is it needed. If that is the dress code for a venue at a band, so be it. Then go home and change before venturing into other public spaces that the majority are appropiately dressed. Don't bring a 2000+ fan ball game into my yard, keep the like in its proper place.
Want to look like a thug, dress like a thug and run the risk of getting stopped when your are 'out of your norm'. Then dress like a thug. The clothes don't make a man but a man makes the clothes. If you are the person who chose those clothes to wear, you are advertising WHO YOU ARE.

I know it's already been said....

I find it ridiculous that so many people have a problem with baggy pants!  It just seems that there are far more important issues in our society than whether or not someone's boxers are showing!   I mean, for crying out loud, let's get our priorities in order.

But while we're on the subject, the way some girls/women are dressing is just as bad, if not worse.  The jeans are sitting lower and lower on the hip.....leaving little to the imagination.   I guess society is more accepting of near naked ladies....but not men.

You're so right! How can banning saggy pants be a racial issue when all races wear them? I actually see more white kids, than black, wearing them. Including my husband's grandson and nephew.
