Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

What will we name the monitors? Sag tag?

I personally do find this style offensive.  But how can you possibly monitor what is offensive?  Will the government have to hire people with tape measures to patrol the streets?  As an aside, one police officer friend of mine said that they liked the saggy pants because they can't run and hold up their pants at the same time.

Baggy pants

I do not think that baggy pants are a racial problem.  I live in a community that boys of all color "sag".  I do not like it because of the way it looks, I also don't like the girls that show their thongs or bra straps.  I believe that "under" clothes are called this for a reason.  Also, I have heard doctors say that when boys sag they have to change the way that they walk in order to keep the pants from falling off.  The doctors say that this can hurt the boys hips and backs.  When I see someone sagging, my impulse is to pull their pants down around their ankles.  If they want to show their underwear, then show all of them.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: rvv210

1st of all as a mother of 3 going on 4, I don't agree with a lot of the hiphop and rap music especially their video's BUT I do listen and bass out to it.  About the pants, it's up to each state and the voters, BUT the kids should have a vote if they are over the age of 18.  NOW about this all going back to hiphop, I agree with Ying Yang Twins and a lot of others out there do too.  THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MTV, BET, OR THE ARTIST MUSIC.  This has to do with the parents.  There is channel blocking and webpage blocking.  If you don't trust your child, that is your fault as a parent.  On the radio, hiphop and rap music is in the radio version, so if you hear your child listening to the bad language version then it's your responsibility as a parent to take that from your child.  Hip Hop and Rap do what they are paid to do, their image NEVER changes, children do.  And only time will pick up the pants.

I have to disagree with you about the Ying Yang Twins...Yes you can block web pages, Yes you can block Tv shows, but can you block out the world? NO You can NOT. Like someone else said, if you go to the grocery store and there are men with their butts hanging out there...How do you block that? Please as a parent I would like to know your secret...Because I will be blocking the net and certaIn shows from my kids but I cant block my city, their schools...maybe their friends...the ones you know about anyway...If you have ever heard the expression it takes a village to raise a child well it can certainly take less then a village to have strong infulences on a child...My kids are smart but who (other then family) do they have to look up to now a days? Gansta rappers with baggy pants? Insane stars? But this is the world we live in and no little law about pants is going to make much of a difference, maybe the next fad will be looking like someone with respect towards their neighbors...but im guessing baggy pants are just a start...the people we allow out children to look up to will find a way to take the look to an even more extreme...maybe we will start doing something when all our children want to look like pimps and hoes....(IE BRATZ DOLLS!) Maybe...or maybe freedom will go to far..somehow when everyone mentions the constitution as a defence for their 'freedoms' I don't think when it was written THEY knew exactly what rights they would be protecting...The right to bear arms for example was written in a different world...maybe our problem is the constitution could use an update, as we live in the year 2008 not the 1700's...

The Baggy Pants Debate Doctor Phil Doctor Phil I am staying out of this debate because if I do debate----

then I will get into trouble. See you on Monday Janurary 28th, 2008.  Sincerley Your. Russell Vlaanderen.---

dr. dr. phil i agree that the baggy pants are disqusting, they look like they never took a bath. so i have another subject you should have on your show...... women  with their boobs hanging out. it is not only disqusting but distracting. i see now the news gals are getting braver now and they are starting to lower their blouses or sweaters or what ever they wear. i think hollywood should put back the respect for them selves and others and stop with this awful fad. what are they teaching our younger generation, that its okay to walk around half naked.... now i see the big heavy set women are starting to do it too and that is a no no what a site they are to look at.....it looks to me like all the women are competing with each other as who looks the best. ugh!!! hope this is on your next show.

Here is my question:

For those who might be thinking the "saggin' pants are cool", here is my question to you; since you think the showing your lower behind is cool, and the there is nothing wrong with wearing pants in such way, i would like to know; How would you feel about if i (a young male) decides to expose my  underwear's frontal instead? Will you be cool with me doing such thing  in front of you, your kids, or even in front of your wife? Cause you ought to know that if showing your behind is "cool", then you might as well be supportive to the possibility of me showing my front too...!
   How about that...?

To not look is sometimes very hard when they walk into the store where you work and lean against the counter with their equipment resting on the counter. Now that is offensive!!

Baggy Pants Issue

Implementing a law against baggy pants?  Are you kidding me?  I am a mother of both a pre-teen and teenage boy and hate the look of those pants just as much as the next person and know some people that wear their pants like that.  I tease them in jest about it, but I don't hate it enough to waste tax payers resources (time and money) to pass a law AND have to enforce it for something so trivial.  I agree that there is a time and a place to dress certain ways and believe that it is necessary to often have dress codes put into effect for schools, workplaces and restaurants (etc....), but to actually spend the governments time and money it takes to pass a law like this instead of concentrating on using those resources for more important things that will benefit people more than something so insignificant as this is just beyond ridiculous.  Are the important things in life not exciting enough or keeping people busy enough that they need to sit around coming up with silly things to pass laws against?  In my opinion, when people want to start dictating to others what they can and cannot wear out in public, we're setting ourselves back decades for the things we worked so hard to obtain (ie. freedom of speech, people's rights, etc.).  People in general should be allowed to wear what they want, but also be aware of the proper places and times to decide to dress this way just like any other decisions they have to make on a daily basis when living their lives.  That common sense and proper behaviour characteristic is basically up to parents to instill in their children when they are raising them and to teach them proper manners, ethics and values.  This is just my opinion that I really felt the need to comment on.

Regards,

Colleen

ITS A SHAME!!!

Quote From: clockers

I agree

There is something wrong with the judgments, not people who wear baggy pants or anything others don't like for that matter.

I'm sorry but I take a FU attitude when it comes to people and their judgments about the way people look.  No one is ever satisfied.  If the child dresses nice, then they say his hair is too long.  If they wear certain colors, they say children should wear "Happy" colors.  Or tattoo's, piercing.  Everyone has a reason on why someone shouldn't do that.  Mind your business.  No one owns the world and certainly we don't own each other, so who the hell am I to tell someone how to dress.

My judgments of people come from their actions, anything else is just plain wrong.

Thanks for you smart and well informed comment.

I HAVE TO TELL YOU, UNFORTUNATELY MANY BAD THINGS HAVE HAPPENED TO MANY GOOD PEOPLE AT THE HANDS OF PEOPLE WHO WEAR BAGGY PANTS, WHO ARE ALL DECKED OUT IN TATTOO'S AND PIERCING, UNFORTUNATELY THEY GAVE YOU BAGGY PANTS, AND TATTOO SPORTING FOLKS A BAD NAME. I WISH THAT IT DIDN'T, BECAUSE IT HAS GIVEN ME ONE MORE THING TO BE LEARY OF.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: dayrt67

I think you were right in saying pick your battles. It really isn't that big of a deal about the baggy pants. The youth will find out what types of jobs they can get dressing the  way they do. The government should not be able to  do.

I totally agree with this.  For me, I honestly do not like it really, but it would not be something I would fight with my teenager about if I had one.  I might make fun of him, but that would be expected! :).  Really we should not let the government tell us how to dress.  I would be so upset if my city did this!  It starts with something small and then they will want to control something else!  This is not a big deal people!

baggy pants origin

do they know the origin of baggy pants ? It originated in jail for gays to let other gays know ,that they are gay too . Also to sell their wares for other gays . To me if they knew that some might not want to wear their pants that way .
