Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Baggy pants

Quote From: amother55

It upsets me to think that "the baggy pants" is such a big issue in Dallas. As long as the kids wear a shirt that covers their behinds, it's okay. Where I live (dallas) that is how it is. So why doesn't the government worry more about the homeless, child abuse, spousal abuve, drugs and gangs, then this issue. My boys (all 5) wore their pants saggin' at one point. Then they got older and now they are just baggy. I think that if they are going to continue to make this an issue, then they need to pass a law that say "women cover up". Many women walk around with the cheeks of their butts showing and way too much cleveage. But that seems to be ok.  Come on, you have more important things to worry about then how people fress.

Thank you!!

Baggy pants

I work in the prison system for Texas.  The offenders in the system wear the baggy pants and we (officers) are constantly telling them to pull up their pants.  When I see children and adults who wear baggy pants, I want to tell them that they look like inmates.  I don't know that there should be a law against this; however, as a tax payer and a Mother, I don't want to see that and have to answer to my children about why that person has their underwear showing.  My oldest child told someone that they needed to pull up their pants once at a movie because she thought they needed to know.  They were ugly to her and caused me to step in and say something.  I asked her why she did that and her response was that she thought they must have been playing hard and needed to pull their pants up.  She meant nothing disrespectful of it but they were ugly to her anyway.

Help, don't hurt

Dear Hip Hop artist everywhere,

PLEASE KNOW,  please know, that you are influencing our children greatly.  I am a white female, who has been a single parent to one white son.  He listens to hip hop because that is "the thing."  I raised him to not be prejudice.  I believe you judge a man by his character and not the color of his skin.  Many of his friends are black and he also has many white friends too.  He is so attracted to hip hop that he thinks everything you sing about is THE WAY TO GO.  So PLEASE do not say you are not responsible to the listening audience.  You must know that you have an opportunity to be a leader.  The baggy pants to me, seems to come from the rap videos.  I made my son wear his pant loosely on his hips but not past the butt.  It's stupid and they can't walk, however I didn't want him to be alienated from his piers.  After watching my son through the years,  I attribute some of the issues he's going through to hip hop.  The friends he has that don't like hip hop have gone on to college and are doing well.  My son has a baby and is finally, after lots of pushing and nagging,  working on his GED.  He is trying to get fast money and doesn't have a job and he thinks you guys are so cool.  He will get high now and again, he wears all the same baggy clothing, he thinks guns are cool, booty is for the taking, and he knows all the drug lingo.  I have heard the songs, and it's all in there!!!!   It is a fight for every mother out there whose kids are listening to YOUR MUSIC!!!!!  Maybe you need to talk about how important education is and influence these kids in the right way.  I am a great mother.  This is from the music.  Dr. Phil, I am surprised you haven't had more shows on this subject.  It's family first , but single parents have a family too.  We struggle to fill both roles. So please help, don't hurt.

Baggy pants

I'm from London, Ontario, Canada and i just watched todays episode
about baggy pants, from the ages of 13-17 i use to wear baggy pants,
and the reason why i use to wear it was not just because of hip-hop but
also because i use to think i was "gangster" hip hop isnt the only
reason why baggy pants are being worn, like im surprised no one brought
up the topic about gangsters. I dont speak for everyone, but for my
self when i grew up more I learned baggy pants isnt for me. My parents
didnt do much about the choice of clothing i was wearing, because they
knew i was gonna learn on my own what i will encounter when i wear that
style and go out. Im not against it, its the persons choice. I know the
subject is jsut about baggy pants, but if the Governor ofd Dallas is
gonna ban baggy pants than they should also banned, goth cloths or
other type of style, because they both give out "bad" images.

YES, YES, YES!!!

It is about time that someone tells these people how they really look!  I don't want it to be a situation where I have to be afraid for my life nor my husbands.  He is a Law Enforcement officer and I am a Bank Manager this is just one mor thing that we have been warned about in both of the mentioned industries.  He has to worry that they might pull a gun on him since there are a lot of hidden places in those awful pants and likewise for me.  I don't know about you but I want to go home at night and so does my husband!

Basically, dress for success boys and girls!  Pull up the pants and get a real job and be responsible otherwise you will live off of Mommy and Daddy for the rest of your life!  I know that they don't want that to happen!

who gives them the right

i really don't understand what the big problem is.  baggy pants is a fashion yes some hip hop does affect your decisions if you are a week minded person and want to be a follower not a leader.  Like ying yang  said it all starts in the home if you don't train your children it not our fault.  I look at it as if i don't see the rear end ( the actual rear end meaning the skin) who cares every one has there own statement to make.  if you are going to ban baggy pants then ban these naked skinny models and play boy that promotes sex and young girls to believe its cool to be a double zero or a size 2 by puking their guts out everyday.  heck a am a 27 year old woman at one time i was in middle school and when kriskross was out and were singing jump jump and cross colors was in with the military boots i cried until my dad got me the whole unit and i wore my pants backwards and they were sagging so if it wasn't a problem then whats the problem know. i am grown i chose my battles and know i chose to dress as a young lady.. know I'm stuck in fashion with the 300 dollar hair and the 400 dollar purses ban that.  when these kids get older and they have been taught well by their parents they will know when and where their fashionable clothes,...they will know not to show up to an interview with baggy pants.  it starts at home and its not right to blame hip-hop its all of television they never chose to be role models they are just doing something they love.

Not a racial issue

Al Sharpton turns everything into a racial issue.  I do not support wearing baggy pants, but I do see all races wearing them...black, white, hispanic.

Baggy Pants

I just got done watching today's show about Saggin' Pants. I don't think the government should be able to tell people what they can or can't wear. I do think that people should take into consideration that there are those of us out there that don't care to see their underwear, boxer, or bare butt. I have seen this as well and to me it is offensive.

The father with his 3 boys on the show said he couldn't believe that an African American mayor would be aginst  the sagging pant. I live in Shreveport, LA. In the last year or so we elected in a new mayor. Our first African American mayor. We are proud of what he has done so far. One of the first things he did when he took office was make it basically illegal to "Sag" here in Shreveport. Here you will get a ticket and be fined for wearing saggy pants. I personally think it was a good idea because I am tired of walking into any store, or just out my front door and seening someones underwear.

I have seen White, Mexican, African American, & other races wearing the sagging pants. It just looks plain stupid! I can understand a little sagging, but I don't want to see your pants down past your butt or the crotch of your pants at your knees. That's not where your crotch is. It makes these people look like they have done their business in their pants instead of the bathroom.
