Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

its a matter of respect

wear what you want people, the government already has too much say in our lives. i think the individual that wears his pants so low his drawers show has no respect for anybody, including himself. 2/3 of the public is offended by it and these clowns that think its cool should think about others and not wear this crap.

i just get tired of that reverend always playing the friggin race card everytime there is a debate about anything.

It is about time that someone tells these people how they really look!  I don't want it to be a situation where I have to be afraid for my life nor my husbands.  He is a Law Enforcement officer and I am a Bank Manager this is just one mor thing that we have been warned about in both of the mentioned industries.  He has to worry that they might pull a gun on him since there are a lot of hidden places in those awful pants and likewise for me.  I don't know about you but I want to go home at night and so does my husband!

Basically, dress for success boys and girls!  Pull up the pants and get a real job and be responsible otherwise you will live off of Mommy and Daddy for the rest of your life!  I know that they don't want that to happen!

Are you kidding me? Your pants are now affecting your potenital? First off, I'm female. Secondly, if I was a male, I wouldn't go on a job interview with my pants sagging, but I also as a female won't go in with my breasts hanging out. What I do on my free time is my buisness. I'm sucessful but live somewhat an alternative lifestyle. Unless my job is paying my 24/7, I do what I want on my time out.

the freedom of america

I just want to say that I do not like my grandsons wearing their pants down on their hips, however I will defend to the death their right to do so.  This was a free country the last I heard.  I do understand that there are many people who do not like the way the guys are wearing their pants, but only the parents can say that they cannot do it.  It is not nearly as revealing as a woman with her crack showing with her low riding jeans or her bellie hanging out , so she can show her bellie button ring, or a woman with DD breast wearing no bra and spagetti strap tops, with almost everything hanging out, or even a mini skirt and some with no underwear.  This is disgusting.  The pants are not showing flesh.  It is causing them to walk funny.  This is their right, even if we do not like it.  You cannot make a law to stop this unless you amend the law to fit all genders and races.  I do not think of this as a racial problem.  Every time I turn around someone is making a racial problem out of BS.

Girls Determine the Norm

I maintain that it will ultimately be young girls and women who will change this fashion trend. When girls refuse to date or associate with young men and boys who choose to wear their pants low, pants will come up.

Another View

My view on the "baggy pants" debate..is I believe it may have started with a racial issue..but it has evolved into a respect issue as well. I think if you are in public view you should have to dress respectful to others in public eye. No one should have to see that.. And I don't think it's about ghetto/black dress.. I think the idea of public eye should be first over expression of dress.. There are all forms of laws public ordinants regarding dress.. Why not add this one to that.. with specific guidelines.. that is respectful and also expressive at the same time.. There is no one way to fix the problem.. needs to be a sit down and discusison of both side of the coin.  IMHO, there needn't be a 1  way or the other..nothing too harsh..

baggy pants debate

I don't understand why Dr. Phil keeps bringing Al Sharpton on his show.  The man has shown over and over again that he is racist.  He makes everything a race issue.  What about the LaCrosse boys?
He is so racist that I believe he is totally irrelevant in these issues.

Baggy Pants

I think this kind of law has no future. People will keep on wearing baggy pants even if there is some kind of penalty. Second, I find the idea of puting restrictions on the clothing of an individual totally crazy. The people that find it disrespectful should go to the third world countries, and see how these african women walk around half naked because of their personnal beleives. I have always been tought that the United States of America is the one coutry that promotes freedom of expression. Well, I have to admit that Canada is far from puting restrictions such as these! Plus, if there is some kind of penalty over men wearing pants a little lower than usual, than how come we accept women with their sexy underwears sticking out, walking around in bikinis, or taking the plaine in their pj's! Most men I know that wear their pants low always have long enough shirts that cover the whole buttom parts! We will soon not be able to wear tank tops? or draw in our sketchbook in public? It is totally wrong! People that might not agree on the baggy pants should look away then! Plus I must agree that this is kind of racist. This image is connected to the hip hop community which is toally wrong. I totally disagree with this kind of law!
