Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: honeydip

This is just rediculous! America was built on capitalism, freedom of speech and expression. GET OVER IT! THERE JUST PANTS!

I mean jesus! Isn't there some places in the USA where women can walk around with their tits hanging out? You know whuts disrespectful? Telling people you how to live their lives!

I just can't believe that in the United States a person can go to jail or get a big fat fine for how they wear their clothes but can get away scott free for animal abuse or any other crime of the sort. A person could beat a dog to death and get a one thousand dollar fine but if their wearing low pants could go to jail!! Some people really need to get their priorities straight!

Mankind has evolved to gain a unique ability to reason and solve problems, clearly some are experiencing something called de-evolution

Do you mean ridiculous? Do you mean they're just pants?

all I can say is that you made an excellent point, people need to grow up and learn that the forefathers of america would NOT want a law passed against the freedom of dress

Who Cares?

I can't believe that we had a show dedicated to this topic.  I don't like it and I think it looks stupid but should the government tell me that I can't wear it if I want to?  No way!  There are other issues that I would like to see addressed and if we are going to spend this much time on baggy pants come to my town where the teenage girls walk around with their "muffin tops" hangin out with their tank tops and tight jeans and just for kicks their birth control patches showing!  That makes me much sicker than seeing baggy pants!

English Please

First of all it would have been nice to able to understand what they were saying, their English was just awful.  The gentleman name Lionel was absolutely ridiculous throwing the race card at every chance that he was giving.  White, pink, purple, black or green it doesn't matter the baggy pants are what they are wearing.  Its the IN thing right now the more emphasis on it the more the kids are doing it.  Hip Hop does have alot to do with it so does alot of other things on TV.  There are homeless childern that are going to go sleep in a park tonight hungry now this is something we need to think about.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

I Personally dont care for baggy pants. I dont say or do anything about it because im not the one walking around with my pants below my ass so who cares. Some people just want to exress themselves in the way of baggy pant wearing. There are lots of things in life that you may or may not agree with. I think people should just let it go and learn to deal with people that are different from you.
you said it all right there, isnt that what your country is founded on is diversity?

Look away, people!

Should the government have the right to tell people what they can and cannot wear?  NO.  There are several issues here and your 'right' to wear something is only one of them.  When I look at my paycheck and see all those taxes taken out for welfare systems, it creates in me great ire.  How dare the government take my money and hand it to someone else!  The reason they do, is because people won't/don't take the initiative and give to those less fortunate on their own..so it has to be taken from you.  This is the same situation about the clothing.  Use good, reasonable judgement-don't walk around with your butt or your boobs hanging out and there won't be a need for the goverment to consider a ban.  There's a law against murdering because people will murder.  There's a law against drunk driving because people will drive drunk.  Have some human decency and they won't feel compelled to make you.  It isn't always about your rights and freedoms.  We live in a society and therefore we need to be respectful and considerate of others.  Your rights become your burden when you use it to try and define who you are.

Despite all of that, despite how you personally feel about baggy pants, love 'em or hate 'em..you have the RIGHT and the opportunity to LOOK AWAY.  Nobody's making you look.  Turn your head via your neck and it won't be an issue anymore!  Is it offending your 3yr old?.. tell her how you feel about it and have her look away.  Life is full of offense and changing other people to fit your lifestyle will never work.  Teach your child how to deal with the negatives in life.  It'll make for a very well prepared teenager.

Is this a race issue?  OMG get a life people.

Where's our Freedom of Expression?

I can not believe that with all of the important issues in todays society, America is focusing on the preference of what one wears. You have the war, drugs, violence, and they choose to focus on something so small. America is really messed up. To say let's ban baggy pants, doesn't that mean you need to ban women wearing thongs, low shirts, tight pants. I mean come on is America going to starting shopping for families also?   I mean who cares? I'm not a fan of baggy pants, but I really don't have the energy to care. Some say we need to be concerned for they kids, or elders who see these boys with baggy pants, it's too small of an issue, when bigger issues are out there that we need to protect our kids from. So it's ok to take away freedom of expression? What's next will America take away freedom of speach?

It is not cool, nor is Hip Hop!

They say its Hip Hop? Well I'm a young black man who loves Hip Hop and I think its the dumbest style ever. I wasn't alive then but I'd rather see Jerry curls come back in style than see saggy pants.  I dont want to see anyone's draws or butt. Its dumb, Ban it !!! Please!!

share the love!

Quote From: kilika87

I personally am a gay man, and its not the fact of the research that he did that offends me, its the way he went about saying it that is offensive
I understand and i love gays. my uncle was gay and died of aids when i was 6 years old. i never really knew him but i hear he was a good man.  but one thing i learned from his sister ( my mother) it doesn't matter what anyone says if your gay and proud (that my uncle was) it doesn't matter. My uncle grew up in a time when it wasn't OK and my grandpa hated him for what he was. i guess its how you take the comment and I'm sorry your offend. but just so you know it didn't make me think any different about you or any other gay person out there. if it changed peoples mind about you there loss. there ignorant for thinking different about you. a song doesn't define you. you do! Share the love.
