Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

BAGGY PANTS

Quote From: thatrabbit

Since when did it become right or fair for anyone to tell you what you can wear, unless it's a parent and a young child. There are so many more important issues that people should be trying to resolve. If the males are not going to be allowed to wear baggy jeans are they going to stop women from wearing short shorts or skirts, low cut tops, or pants that are too tight ? We all know some women who should not be dressing this way do, at least the males are covered up and don't have any body parts hanging all out. A female can just as easily hide a weapon in her shirt as a male can in baggy pants. I think if you see something you don't like look the other way instead of continuing to look. I know this show hasn't aired yet but I saw the previews.

BAGGY PANTS TO THE POINT OF  REVEALING THE UNDERWEAR IS OFFENSIVE, AS WELL AS  SKIRTS SO SHORT YOU SEE THE GIRLS  CROUCH.

I SAW A  BUEATIFUL  LADY ON  A  TALK  SHOW  WHO TRIED  TO SIT ON A  STOOL THEY HAD TO  WHITE  HER  CROUCH OUT AS SHE  SIT DOWN. AND THE WHOLE TIME SHE WAS ON STAGE.

IT  DOSEN'T MATTER IF THEY ARE WHITE OR BLACK,  RAPE , ETC IS BACK UP FOR  YOUNG  PEOPLE .

THE  LAW  NEED TO STEP  IN.

REPECT NEED TO COME BACK FOR  THE  ELDER  THEY  HAVE WALK IN THE THESE MALLS  TO.

I PICKED UP  A KID  AT  HIGH SCHOOL ONE DAY I  COULD NOT  HAVE A CONVERSATION  BECAUSE  HIS FRIEND  CAME TO  CAR WAVING HIS HANDS  HIS  PANTS  DROP SO  LOW IT DRAGED UNDERWEAR DOWN  I AM  LOOKING  AT SOME YOUNG BOYS  FRONT AREA.

we have bigger problems

Pants is not the problem. I grow up with baggy pants and it didn't hurt me. That don't mean that my mother and grandmother like it. And look at me know.  I'm 24 years old and been living on my own at 19.  After high school I been working two jobs and still a hard working man. My grand papa, uncles, and cousins all fought in wars. Why they fought? Why Dr. King fought for freedom? Please don't forget about that. We're still fighting. People bled for civil rights and we are talking about pants. The government don't need to be doing anything. The government have bigger thing to think about. All that tax money I pay. What time do they have to think a bout pants. They better think about Bush, that trillion dollars he lost, the oil and our nation. I personal have a problem with that because I'm trying to prepare for the future. We have to vote for Obama for a change. I personal believe that this is the next movement. I will be there fight all the way. Let people were they pants the way they want to. Let them find them self. I rather a boy find him self to be a man. But don't get me wrong be hard on them but not to hard. You can't make a man. A man have to make him self.  I believe we need do teach not change them because  we have to remember they have to find who they are as a man.  We have so much other problem in this nation and I can't believe we're talking about baggy pants. A man know he can't get a job with baggy pants its no rocket science. I have problem with young men not working, living free off people, not going to school, having to much kids, and  selling drugs. I'm not going to have anybody tell me what I'm going to wear and not even the government. I will boycott that one at any means. I believe in our right. A lot of young men's didn't even wear baggy pants any more. But it is a time and place. The young men will be alright if you teach them and pray.  Some men will be sorry for nothing men. Some are just born that way and will have a hard life. Stop crying, stop being a hater, and grow up. You are taking it to fare. Every generation will have a problem with there kids cloths and even me. Everybody have a opinion. That's how God mad us and that's my we live in the USA.

It's More Than Butts

The whole saggin' issue is so much more than butts and everyone is going to have a different opinion - so I'll jump right in with mine.

For me, first and foremost is an issue of self-respect and respect for the sensibilities of others.  Yes, it's a fashion trend and it'll end just like all other fashion trends - I get that.  But in the meanwhile, I personally think it's vulgar and stupid to want to show your undergarments and have your butt hanging out of what is commonly accepted as outerwear.  I don't want to see male butts or female butts.  We used to make jokes about appliance repairmen and their butts cracks hanging out being gross - so why isn't it still gross today?

I get the fact, too, that young people are making a statement and enjoy the shock effect it has on people who aren't of their generation.  Get in line - each generation has had something they embraced as daring and rebellious - most of us just didn't show our backsides. My personal fashion guideline is less is more - a teasing peek is far more interesting than letting it all hang out.  And there's a time and place for various kinds of dress - or at least there once was.

One of the posters here asked who's right it was to decide what people wear ... well, it's the right of businesses of all kinds, schools, churchs - most kinds of institutions we must interact with on a daily basis - it's called a dress code, and it's perfectly legal and appropriate that if individuals don't have the common sense to know what one should wear in a given situation - those governing the venue, event or place of business do.

Sometimes it's a matter of being age-appropriate; sometimes it's a matter of safety; sometimes it's a matter of common sense and sometimes it's a matter of self-respect.  I'm not a prude, but even shake my head in disbelief at the lack of good judgement people use when selecting their wardrobe.  Simply put - there are few public venues where others want to see boobs and butts exposed.  Personally - when a woman shows too much, I know I'm alone in thinking she has no self-respect and is sending a signal that she's just an easy tart.  When males wear shirts open down to their navels or pants below their butt cheeks, particularly if their past the age of 21 - I wonder what shortcoming they're overcompensating for.

Personally - I think this "fashion trend" is just another sad indication of how little self-respect our young people have for themselves, and how little concern and respect they have for others - particularly young children and their elders.

I like the solution my son's middle school resource officer had for saggers ... he carried a big roll of duct tape with him and when he saw a sagger - he taped their pants up - both around the waist and making suspenders out of the tape.  The child had to leave the tape in place for the school day and if they did not, they were suspended.

Sag if you must, but do it away from schools, churches and public places where you know others' will be offended.  And know that I'm not alone in thinking you're a flaggin idiot.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

It should be considered illegal exposure to show ones buttcrack. Other than that I think the whole sagging thing is just very disrespectful. People should not show off their underwear in public. Also if you look like a gang member then that is how you should expect to be treated. It is not just black people that do this. A growing number of white thug wanna bes are doing ti also. Lets not forget girls showing off their thongs or butt.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: kleesun

"If we want to give this style the heave -ho just get a bunch of wrinkly old men with protruding bellies and hairy butt cracks to start bagging out."

Ha ha!  No kidding!

Thanks--I needed a chuckle on a Monday morning (even if I didn't need that mental image).

Sorry, bad visual LOL

 I hadn't had my coffee yet :)

Baggy Pants

I grew up in the 60s and when I look back on the clothes I wore, I realize I have no reason to criticize anyone's right to dress as an individual. Although I don't like the look -- when I first saw the baggy pants, I laughed at the person, thinking it was just a joke -- I think the more attention you pay to it the longer it will last.  My parents would roll their eyes, but let me dress as I wanted.  It lasted for a while until I grew up.

Unbelievable

The way you dress is a direct reflection on you.  If young men or women wish to date and/or socialize with people that dress in this manner.....then they can HANG-OUT somewhere in the privacy of there parents homes and go out in public with there privates put away.  Samantha, Texas

Love it

Quote From: f150beech

Most of the young crowd and many African Americans do not realize that sagging pants started years ago.  In the 1950's a middle aged white man name Stringbean, who was famous on the Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw, wore his pants down almost to his knees while he sang and played a banjo.  Can you believe it?  A middle aged white man from the 1950's south helped start this style of wearing clothes.

I had totally forgotten this character from Hee- Haw... yes I am that OLD....Funny how we weren't offended by it then when people were a lot more conservative than they are now... guess it's because it didn't catch on like wildfire... how sad we no longer have a sense of humor about how people dress.

Sorry kids, you are not the first to dress goofy and you won't be the last... lighten up people... dressing in baggy clothes no more makes you a bad person than standing in a garage makes you a car.

no sense of style.

Its funny you guys are going off this, because to tell the truth, the whole baggy pants is out of style. Anyone who is still wearing baggy pants to their ankles is corny around my way. I am saying as a  young teen, who likes fashion. Actually the style is more of tighter, skinny jeans but that is not for everybody.

But basically, you guys are behind time, because "baggy"  is a no-no. So a waste of debate.

Talk about something else important like getting our troops out, or tightening our border. That is what the government should be worry about. But we're called the Land of the Free. It 'was' a style among young kids, so let it be, but at the same time no buttocks should be hanging out.

Gee, Al sharptopn going to be up here. I cannot stand him, and I am a African American female. He  OR his girlfriend, Jesse Jackson, DOES NOT REPRESENT MY RACE. So whatever come out his mouth does not apply to majority of us educated ones.

baggy pants

i think this debate is stupid.  i  am a 27 yr old white female that has 4 kids and i wouldnt care if any or all of my kids dressed like that.  i think it is actually kinda cute.  Besides, i dont think the people making a big deal out of baggy pants make an issue out of women wearing short shorts that show their butts or shirts that show a lot of boob.  So in reality, they are being very sexist.
