Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Personally, I hate seeing people with baggy pants. It shows no class or respect for anyone around, including themselves. I would like it if the government banned the pants. However, it does seem to violate rights. I'd much rather see cigarettes or tattoos banned.

Food preparation by saggers

I don't mind the guys wearing this style any where except in a food establishment, it is not sanitary!!  Back in 1995, when this seemed to first begin, I observed a worker at a fast food place with his shorts at the same level as the countertop he was working on, oftentimes touching it.  I was appalled!  I figured it was a one time thing and his manager would say something to him.  A few weeks later, I returned, saw the same young man, dressed in the same manner, I turned around and never returned to that restaurant.

It similiarly disgusts me seeing a customer in a restaurant dressed this way, with his shorts touching things not meant to be touched by "privates" not meant to be touched.  This shows me these people have no respect for themselves or anyone else and should be escorted from the restaurant.

Right is right and wrong is just plain wrong!

The Baggy Pants Issue

I am an African American woman living in New York City. My husband and I are the parents of a seventeen year old daughter, but I think it is absolutely disgraceful the way young men dress (or rather, do not dress), by wearing their pants so low and exposing their buttocks in public.  I absolutely fault the parents because they buy their children's clothing. Unfortunately today, many parents don't have a clue as to how to raise their children. If  parents don't have any sense, what do you expect of their offspring? Lionel, on the show, is an absolute idiot, and in my opinion a poor excuse for a parent. He and his sons wear baggy pants, and Lionel doesn't see anything wrong with what he referred to as their "sense of style".  Lionel stated that he is more concerned with low self-esteem, than low pants. One of his sons stated that if he (the son), doesn't care about his future, then why should anyone else care? Well Lionel, I think you have your work cut out for you my friend, your son's comment screams of low self esteem. The blind leading the blind. My suggestion, start by making him pull his pants up and wear a belt, and you Lionel, should do the same!!!

I guarantee it will do wonders for the young man's self esteem and his self respect!

baggy pants

It is a very sad thing to see young guys and gals wearing their pants down around the bottom of their buttox.  I think there should be a law or ordinance that should be inforced because there are dress codes in schools.  I don't think they are enforced in school.  All it takes is some common sense to know and realize that these kids are asking for guidelines.  They want to know that this is not acceptable.  It is disgusting to see someone ass hanging out.  Don't people realize that "CRACK KILLS"  and I don't like seeing cracks of any kind whether male or female or cement.   You had that video from Dallas that was not from the mid-west.  Here is small town USA ; WE DO NOT LIKE CRACKS AND PANTS THAT HANG DOWN BELOW THE BUTTOCKS AND SHOW SOMEONES UNDERWEAR.  It would be nice to see that you and the rest of the country appreciate the mid-west opinion.  Though sometimes I wonder because I don't see any representation.(especially from mid michigan area)  It is like we do not exist.  We are very down home and in my household I demand a very high standard as in respect for others and for myself.  I teach my little ones at work that respect is #1 and I feel that the kids respect and love me.  I always call my kids sir and maam.  We need to reinforce that in school.  That certain things are not acceptable to society.  Thanks Dr. Phil for listening and I do realize that I probably will never get a response from you but I know you are very busy.  But thanks anyway.  Ann Ames.  Alma, Michgan

Making too much of it

Every time that adults make too much of a fad or trend, it just makes it more desirable.  Ignore it and it will soon die out.

Baggy Pants

I don't like the baggy pants.  Half of these guys when they bend over their crack shows and I think that is disgusting!  I think they should be banned in the schools and work places but that is about it.  I don't think a law is really going to help the issue out.  You showed your son on line and I believe he had his shirt tucked in his pants and that  looks a lot better than their underwear and rear end hanging out.

My son used to wear his pants low and he knew every time he walked into a room where I was that I was going to yank on his pants and pull them down.  He got smart and starting pulling his belt tighter so when I pulled on them they didn't come down.

WHO CARES????

I don't get this at all- who the **** cares about how ppl where their pants? There have always been fads and trends, why all the hoopla over this one?  Honestly, this is the silliest thing I have ever seen and I am ashamed to be part of "white america" when I read these posts and watch this show. If ppl want to wear their pants around their knees and look idiotic LET THEM- it's their right to wear what they want! Over the years there are lots of styles that are unappealing, so I don't see why we all have to freak out over this one. With all the serious issues facing Americans today: impending recession, the mess in Iraq, the pathetic a** government, etc. the last thing we should be concerned with is ppl's pants!

And we wonder how Bush got elected for 2 terms.....

get over it

this is just a style that will eventually fade out. we have more important issues to deal with than this. i am tired of people trying to make a moral issue out of the littlest things. people wear what they want to, i could care less, as long as there actual butt and stuff ain't hanging out so what, there just underwear. it's not a racial issue either, it's multi-cultural. hey they'll get tired of pulling there pants up so many times a-day, it's just the point of when. let's deal with the bigger issues at hand that we have. the day someone tells me what i can and can't wear , is the day i become defiant, and i'm a middle aged white-woman. when all of a sudden did our society become prim and proper anyway? and another thing let's stop blaming music, movies and tv IT'S GETTING OLD!

pull them up

We do not  want  to see your underwear.   They make laws for  everything  else.   But making  them  stick  is   something  else.  And  ladies  should   cover  themselves  also.   So if  you pass a law about baggy    pants.  Pass one on  women   showing   too   much.  I  think  all   of   it  is  disrespectfully.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: cartilagecrown

So, basically you want laws to enforce dress codes to make sure everyone is presentable according to your standards.

Lets say I see an old lady with a huge woolly red and green santa-faced Christmas sweater, or a big, ugly, neon orange floral dress. Should I be able to ban ugly patterns and ill-fitting shoulder pads because I think that they make women look "ridiculous"?

How will police even enforce this? How baggy is too baggy? Will the police measure the amount of bagginess? I've seen guys wear pants about five times too big, (I dont even know how they get them to stay up) and I also know guys who get just a size or two bigger, so they have slightly baggy pants. Will the (hypothetical) law cover only REALLY baggy pants, or will anyone get fined for daring to wear their pants a size or two big? What if I'm feeling sick and I want comfortable, baggy pants and they're too baggy? What if some people just don't like tight pants?

I just wonder how people define these baggy pants. My boyfriend wears pants a size bigger just because he doesnt want them too tight on his waist. Theyre not really, really baggy, theyre only slightly baggy. The word baggy sounds weird after a while when I think about it a lot.

Yes, people need to choose their own clothes.

Thank you! The fashion police can not be allowed! Just because someone thinks they look "ridiculous" is no reason to ban them. I find mullets and tatoos and fake body parts to be ridiculous but I don't want them banned. To each his own! The constitution says that you have a right to Liberty. If we ban "baggy" jeans, we will be banning the liberty to wear what we please and we would only be increasing the censorship that plagues the streets of the United States of America.
