Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Pick your Battles

I think you were right in saying pick your battles. It really isn't that big of a deal about the baggy pants. The youth will find out what types of jobs they can get dressing the  way they do. The government should not be able to  do.

It is not a racial or homosexual issue

I too felt compelled to share my opinion.  Pants have a place for one's butt.  That is where it should go. The majority of saggers, all races, wear their pants at the bottom of their buttocks.  This is not the modest wear that the father and 2 sons displayed.

Many school systems have banned saggy, baggy pants for a very good reason.  that reason is the safety of our children.  I have a video which was sent to me entitled tuck in shirt via e-mail.  I wish everyone could view this.  The video made by a school system shows a teen pulling 12 guns from inside his pants.  One was a pump shotgun.  Tucking in a shirt and pulling ones pants up on campus helps officers do their job.  It also gives them an idea if there is an intruder on campus, ie- the one without the shirt tucked in and his pants down below his buttocks.

Government should not mandate what we wear.  However, if people are at risk or offended by others something should be done.  Perhaps each school or business entity should implement their own policy.

And yes, exposed thongs, butt cracks, and breast are offensive to many people.  If we all condsidered

how we treat others, as we would like to be treated, we wouldn't be having these issues.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: sharsherma

I have a 14 year old son who wears baggy pants every day. We are so happy this is the style.

My son almost died 4 years ago, he had a large section of his colon removed and now has a stoma and a bag. With the baggy style my son can wear jeans, the regular style of jeans leave no room for his bag, there is a large lump under the pants that is very noticeable. We love the baggy pants and shirts. My 14 year old who has been to hell and back can now where something that is comfortable for him.

We live in a very small town out in the country, there are the kids who wear baggy pants and then there are the kids that wear the pants that are so tight that I am in awe that they can even move in them.

Why are people so interested in what others wear?  Put that interest into your community or your own children, then baggy pants wouldn't be an issue.

Your situation is very "unique". I am sorry for your son's condition, and I pray he continues to do well. However, our society no longer has any standards, and it really is a shame. I am a parent of a teenage daughter, and she has to dress respectfully (according to my standards), as long as I'm the one who buys her clothing. Our young people need to have self respect, as well as respect for others. That's the name of the game.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: tkelso

I don't feel that the baggy pants campaign is racially based. I don't much care to see peoples backsides hanging out over the wasteband of their pants no matter what race is behind the dressdown. Likewise the whole thing with thongs hanging out is equally offending. Both 'fashion statements' are very trashy. If Eve had wanted us to only half dress she'd have only eaten half an apple. Cover up already!
Hold on a minute, all they had on in the Garden were fig leaves. This may not be a good comparison.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Whenever I see guys wearing baggy pants with their skivvy shorts showing...I don't think of  any particular race, or genre, rap or hip hop....I think of my Grandpop...who probably started this trend over 35 years ago...I can still hear my Grandma yelling " Pull up your pants, OLD MAN!", everytime I see someone sporting this particular "Style".

Baggy Pants

Hi Dr. Phil;

I am disgusted with this 'baggy pants' issue.  It is DISRESPECTFUL, and LUDICROUS!  Not only are the 'baggy pants wearers' being disrespectful to others, but also to THEMSELVES.  I, for ONE, do NOT appreciate having to look at the CRACK of someones' BUTT when I go to the mall or even the grocery store!  If I WANTED to SEE such gross anatomy, I would join a NUDIST CAMP!

I have had ONE 'personal run-in' with the baggy pants with my Son several years ago....he came downstairs with baggy pants on, and as soon as I saw what he was wearing, the first thing I asked him was where he GOT them....he said he borrowed them from a 'friend'.  I said fine, when you get home I will be parading around in my BRA and PANTIES for all your friends to see!  Well....that was the END of 'baggy pants' in MY household!

As for the comments the 'so called REV.' Al Sharpton made about the baggy pants issue being RACIAL...???   Oh for PITIES sake!  It IS a BLACK issue!!

baggy pants

Being a profound nudist, I belive the only question should be to cover up or not . Questions about dress codes should only concern minor children, by parents or school. JMHO

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

I have strong opinions about this debate, but I do not think that it should be outlawed.  Persoanlly, I think it looks stupid.  If I saw my child wearing their clothing this way, they would not leave the house.  I also do not think that this is a racial issue.  When I was in high school, which was very predominately white with a few Mexican students, more than half of the boys there wore their pants this way.  Many of them learned not to however, because one of my friends would go around yanking their pants off if they didn't pull them up.  That said, I am now in college, where it is a continuing trend.  What I found amazing was the fact that a lot of the girls I go to school with wear their pants this way.  I think it looks dumb when guys do it, and I think it looks just as dumb (if not moreso) when girls do it.  While I think it is inapproriate, I think that the government has better things to do than worrying about how people wear their clothes.

The baggy pants debate

Quote From: bmw_rylee

I'll start off saying that I am a 21 year old white male. This has nothing to do with race. I am actually very into the rock community. I do NOT sag my pants but I don't care what other people do. The majority of the people who are against it are middle aged Americans. Just because you grew up in a close minded generation where everyone did the same thing and it was encouraged not to step out of line, doesn't mean you need to try to impose on our generation. You people are no better than racists with your judgment. In the 60's, people thought black people were uneducated, low lives who were just there to cause trouble. I thought we were past putting these judgments on people. Even though most of you are old enough to be my parents, you need to open your mind and grow up. I've also seen the argument on here about getting a job and making something of ourselves. Just because someone sags their pants doesn't mean theyre a bad person. I can guarantee that I make more money than half of you and have a great job. I'm not bragging by my mother is extremely proud of me even though I have bright dyed red hair and lots of piercings in my face. This world is becomming much more open to different styles and appearance. I only hope that the close mindedness of your generation dies out. I feel like were living in a world where women can't vote and blacks aren't allowed to go to school. I thought this garbage died out. It will be a glorious time when our acceptable generation comes to power. I think it will be much more peaceful not having been sheltered most of our lives. Thank you for your time and I meant no disrespect. Take care.
Most of the middle aged Americans that are so appalled at the fact that these kids would dress this way are the same kids who wore what they pleased when they were the same age.  Then, they thought the adults were too closed minded and that their fashions and music made sense.  Maybe if they would take out an old photo album and look at the mess they wore, they would shut up.  Personally, my teenager wears his pants a little loose - no underwear showing, but clearly a size too big.  He is a football player with a muscular build and feels more comfortable with loose fitting clothes.  As long as he remains an honor student, attends and participates in church and community activities, and gives me no reason to believe he is stealing, killing or using drugs - I don't care what he wears.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

My mother and I feel thi is a waist of time worrying about how pants are worn. The focus should be on young offenders and other such serious matters. My mom has always told myself and my brother that if we wore inappropriate clothing she would take scissors to them in front of everyone. We agree that a propr dress code should be established at home and not worried about by governments. If schools want to propose a dress codefor appropriate wear we would understand. There will alwys be a question in regardsto certain styles as fads in our society. But it is upto the arents to establish ground rules as t what is appropriate and in appropriate and when certi styles can be worn.
