Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

My personal experience...

I was at a grocery store with my daughter (who was 3 yrs old at the time) when we got in line behind a younger man with his white underwear and buttcrack showing with his pants down around his upper thighs. I feel like that was completely inappropriate and none the less my daughter, being 3, voiced loudly her opinion of " Eww mommy, you can see his booty! You aren't supposed to let people see your panties!"  I'm not sure who had the redder face him or me.  After that i tried to explain that some people choose to wear their pants this way but she was obviously bothered by this.  I think my view of this just grew stronger, it was so unfair for my daughter to have to be exposed to that in your everyday grocery store.  As funny as it seems I don't think it bothered me as much as her and for that reason I am now completely against the whole pants below your but thing.  I feel like baggy pants alone are not a big deal to me but exposing body parts is embarassing to us and should be to them.

priorities

I just think that the legal systems priorities are out of order.I understand where both sides of the baggy pants arguments and their reasons.

The problem that i have is that people shouldn't go to jail for a dress code, they should be there for something thats harmful or dangerous. I think the focus should be on gang violence, drugs, drinking, smoking and things that actually harm people, not how they wear their clothes.

The priorities of this country are really mixed up and it scares me to see where the focus is.

I was thinking the same thing!!!

I think that you are making a huge issue out of something that shouldnt be an issue at all. IF you dont like to see it??? Don't look. Where you say it isn't appropriate, what about your language? Should a ban be passed on freedom of speech now? Some would say the way you addressed this matter isnt appropriate, should the government regulate that? You say that its about dressing in the "right way." Who is to say what the right way to dress is? What if someone doesn't like a shirt you wear or thinks that the makeup you wear is offensive? Are you going to want the government to pass a law on how much makeup a woman can wear? How we can wear our hair? NO, you arent. Lets put more effort into the major issues in the world today, and stop worrying about how other people dress. You dont like it? Dont look. Plain and simple.
Thank you for saying that!!! If you DON"T LIKE IT DON"T LOOK! What you wana ban UGLY people too...lol! There are more immediate issues to deal with get a grip!!! And if you're THAT worried about this issue, you need to reevaluate YOURSELF and your spending of your time!!!!

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: fkad102790

I BELIEVE THAT THE RESPONSABILITY LIES WITH THE PARENTS. I THINK IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN RUNNING AROUND CURSING, SINGING AND PLAYING OFFENSIVE MUSIC, AND BEHAVING VERY RUDE TO OTHER PEOPLE, THAT THOSE PARENTS ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB. SHAME ON THEM. I HAVE TO SAY THAT I WOULD BE MUCH MORE WILLING TO OVERLOOK THE BAGGY PANT ISSUE IF ALL THE OTHER SHORT COMINGS WERE TAKEN CARE OF. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SAY AS A MOTHER OF 2 TEEN AGE CHILDREN A BOY AND A GIRL. THAT I PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO WHAT MY CHILDREN WEAR, WHO THEY ARE WITH, WHERE THEY GO, AND HOW THEY CONDUCT THEMSELVES IN PUBLIC. WHEN I BECOME AWARE OF UNBECOMING BEHAVIOR I AM ALL OVER THAT.
I agree with you the parents of these children are going to regret it. I have a friend that has 2 boys that wear their pants like that and I am close enough to these people that I will tell them that it looks like that they crapped in their pants and need to put on a diaper. That I personally like to look at a mans butt and then see if his face will match. I do have one son that will wear pants that bag a little so the women will not see his butt but he was in the military and had no chose but wear what they told him to wear. his fit him in the waist but sag in the backin

Baggy Pants.....

One thing that I noticed while watching the show is that majority of the individuals who were asked their opinions on baggy parents were from a completely different generation then the youth who wear the baggy pants. This makes me wonder if it isnt about racism or respect but just evidence of  a generation gap. I have not met many guys who have their pants at the "appropriate" level and it seems to almost be a "guy" thing now. It's not just in the hip hop culture but it can be seen in the rock, punk and even with emo's. It's even more shocking with emo boys because the pants are already very tight but worn low and it leaves me wondering how that it possible without pain from things being squished! I very much so agree with the minister from New York, if baggy pants are seen as disrespectful then v-necks, low rise pants, tube tops and majority of girls clothing (which is revealing) should be illegal.

Indecent exposure....

I am a 37 year old mother of three. I have 2 girls and one boy, none of wich I would allow to dress this way. I do not see this as a matter of race. I could care less what color you are, where you live or how much money you or your parents make. I DO NOT WANT TO SEE YOU IN YOUR UNDERWEAR, MALE OR FEMALE! Nor do I want my children to see it. It is ridiculous. Some of these young men have their pants so low, they are below their privates. What would society say to a woman doing the same? I also do not agree with the "ladies" showing their "strings" above their pants. These items of clothing are called UNDERwear for a reason, they go UNDER your clothing. Please, show some dignity and respect.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: rhonda403

Your situation is very "unique". I am sorry for your son's condition, and I pray he continues to do well. However, our society no longer has any standards, and it really is a shame. I am a parent of a teenage daughter, and she has to dress respectfully (according to my standards), as long as I'm the one who buys her clothing. Our young people need to have self respect, as well as respect for others. That's the name of the game.

Rhonda

I agree with Rhonda....and I am also sorry for your Sons' situation; but I assume he doesn't have to show the crack of his butt just because he wears baggy pants?

baggy pants

Here is my veiw on the baggy pants.... I remember being in 8th grade when it started getting popular... 8th grade I was 12-13 years old. I am now almost 31. How has a fashion lived for 15+ years? I think to what I wore in 8th, 9th, 10th grade, and I wouldn't be caught dead in those clothes. It is like guys clung onto something, and will not let it go. It looked like they had pooped in their pants 15 years ago, and it looks like they pooped in their pants today.

And we teach our daughters to not show their underwear. Why is it ok to let our sons show thir skivvies?

The one thing I have heard from police, is they like the droopy pants, suspects cant run away fast without their pants falling down.

Baggy pants

I am watching your show regarding the baggy pants and I do not like the "sagging pants".  Several of my white middle class grandsons (16-18) where their pants this way.  My daughter-in-law says she  does not like this look and they are not allowed to sag, but she buys their clothes and they do sag. I do not understand this concept.  The same with them wearing 3X shirts that hang to their knees.

I  dislike more the way the school girls and the females on TV where the low-cut tops with their boobs hanging out and the crack in their butts showing when they bend over - the low-rider pants are discussing on most females wearing them.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: thenewyear

How can that man or anyone else on this show have the nerve to criticize anyone about wearing these low cut pants showing anything when alot of women go around with half or more of their boobs showing. Or is it ok with them that women show their boobs because the men want to look at them!!!!!!!!!! I guess looking at it this way men aren't being disrespected when women are showing anything they can get away with. This just makes me furious the way there is a double standard for men and women showing body parts.

We can even watch a movie or TV commercial -especially the diet products commercials -nowadays without seeing women's boobs showing and therefore, how can anyone in the country have anything to say about these baggy pants.

Where isn't someone complaining about the way women dress? Every year tops on women are getting lower and lower. In my opinion, these women are advertising something and have no morals.

Come on people, you know how women dress--- why is it ok if this isn't???????

Look, I wear loose tops that cover up my breasts, and STILL sometimes ,some men, will be looking at my chest when I'm talking to them. And I'm a 53 year old over the hill lady and I conduct myself in a very ladylike manner. IT DON'T MATTER WHAT YOU WEAR, you cannot control where other people look or what they think. So why bother if you ask me?
