Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

It's really sad how this is a racial issue when there are plenty of white and other races who wear their pants this way. Its NOT just black people. This also has nothing to do with music. There are guys who sing pop and metal and rock who wear their pants low. What about Travis Barker of Blink 182? He's white and sings rock. Making a law will not do anything. People will get around it and continue to do what they want. Why doesn't the government and the people trying to create a ban on this put this much effort into more important issues.

my opinon

This is an issue i dont even think should discussed about. Having Baggy pant is a personal style. If you dont like it dont look. thats the way i see things. it isnt about hating peopel or hating races. Its about a fashion statement. We arnt suppose to judge on how people wear there clothes. Just take it the way it is.

give it time and the pants will go

every generation has a clothing fad. i remember in the early 60's my dad said he was embarrassed to have anyone know he was my Father because they would think that he wouldn't buy me any clothes. my jeans had more patches than original material. as far as a gun could be hidden in th baggy clothes,  that's just a sad sign of the times.  a gun could be hidden in a trench coat too. shall we band those also?

My two cents

Personally it really doesn’t bother me one way or another. What really makes me want to speak up and say something here.. Is the fact that they want to ban something.. While I might not care one way or another about this issue what is to stop them from banning something I might wish to wear later.

If they start trying to tell us what we can and cannot wear, where goes our freedom for personal preference and expression.  I once heard from a very intelligent and wise teacher in my highschool career, she said “ If you let anyone ban one thing, what’s to stop them from banning something entirely different. People In America have the freedom to chose, how can we let them take our freedom to chose our books, movies, music, and everything else.” (That has always stuck with me.. while it isn't word for word it’s the right of it)

While I realize that music and such is not in play here.. It could turn out that way.. Once you start passing laws against clothing.. Then where does it stop.  What do we ban and what do we keep? Its all opinion which means there is really no right answer. Where do we draw a line in the sand?

Besides that wouldn’t we be taking away from our protection? Police have a hard time as it is.. And that doesn’t include writing tickets for your pants.. Isn’t that a little much? While you might not agree with me..  I thought I might need to state my opinion..

The baggy and saggy pants are not my thing,  but the law should be in place so we do not have to look at all the old mens plumber crack.

comon! this is just ignorant talk

i think this topic is utterly ridicilous. pull up your pants? how about pull up your shirt. or take off that stupid sweater, or ugly pin. or maybe the government will go as far as.. take off your wig.. its gross and offensive. comon.. lets be real about the situation. if you dont want your children wearing baggy pants. then when you are teaching your children morals and values.. teach them that. but when they become adults. we are allowed to do what we want. i am a 19 year old female and im not going to sit here and lie. i enjoy the saggy look. i think its attractive on those who can pull it off. if they arent showing anything innapropriate.. then there is no reason there should be a problem with it.. IF U DONT LIKE IT .. DONT LOOK.. i dont enjoy seeing girls wearing belly shirts or extremely obese people wearing bikinis or tight clothes. but its reality.. it happens.. and its a personal choice to dress the way they want. no government will EVER tell me how i have to dress. they already control basically every other aspect of our lives.. lets not let them take away our freedom of expression. the issue wont stop here.. if we continue to let them control us. it will just keep gettin worse and soon we will all be conformed to wearing 1 color.. 1 outfit.. every day of our lives so we dont offend eachother. lets not become lemmings.

High Horses

I think people need to get off their high horses and worry about the real issues in our country and states !!! I live in Ill. and as of 01/08 our Gov. had 100 new laws for us. Most of them r pretty stupid and our state is hurting money wise but he thought it was a priority to ban smoking in public !!! I don't think my boys need to c women's thongs or their tatters hanging out of a sleezy shirt, but i don't c people on Dr Phil telling him these women need to respect "3 year old boys" !! Yes people might lable these women "sleezy", but they know what people might be thinking of them !! Its a "choice" they r making, just like it is the choice of these people to wear their pants baggy and take the chance of people thinking negative thoughts about them !!! I loved how the Rev stepped around Dr Phil's question about the thong's !!! Boxers don't show skin like thongs do !!!!

Baggy pants are NOT a racial issue...

Quote From: hpmx59

The Baggy Pants Debate Doctor Phil Doctor Phil I am staying out of this debate because if I do debate----

then I will get into trouble. See you on Monday Janurary 28th, 2008.  Sincerley Your. Russell Vlaanderen.---

There is absolutely nothing racial about our young generation wearing baggy pants. I live in a mid-size town in Colorado and see teens and pre-teens (especailly boys) wearing baggy pants everyday. The young men I see are caucasion, mexican, and african american. I personally think the style looks rediculous and am glad my 13 year old son likes "normal jeans". However, I think we need to look back at some of the styles we adopted ourselves in the 80's (and every generation for that matter). Remember the Modonna look back then! Cut our kids some slack. As long as they aren't showing inappropriate body parts and have decent attitudes let them wear what they want. Baggy pants is a petty issue compared to bigger and scarier issues we should concern ourselves with.

This is not a race issue.

Quote From: kaybaby666

One thing that I noticed while watching the show is that majority of the individuals who were asked their opinions on baggy parents were from a completely different generation then the youth who wear the baggy pants. This makes me wonder if it isnt about racism or respect but just evidence of  a generation gap. I have not met many guys who have their pants at the "appropriate" level and it seems to almost be a "guy" thing now. It's not just in the hip hop culture but it can be seen in the rock, punk and even with emo's. It's even more shocking with emo boys because the pants are already very tight but worn low and it leaves me wondering how that it possible without pain from things being squished! I very much so agree with the minister from New York, if baggy pants are seen as disrespectful then v-necks, low rise pants, tube tops and majority of girls clothing (which is revealing) should be illegal.
Rev. Al Sharton makes everything in to a color issue. This issue has no color preference, I have 4 boys that have never worn baggy pants....and the 2 girls.  I am tired of everything being made in to a racist fight, Al Sharpton needs to keep to himself, or off the show.

I agree, pull your pants up!

I totally agree with the whole idea of pull your pant up, the government getting involved, and anything else that will cause these guy to pull up their pants. I have a one year old son, and I pray that he grows up to be a man and has enough respect for himself, his mother, and other people to wear his pants correctly.  It is very disrespectful to women, men, and children when we have to walk around looking at their butts.  When a woman is dressed a certain way and a man says something degrading to her and she gets angry,  the first thing that guy will say is, " she shouldn't dresses like that if she didn't want nobody to say anything to her."  Well it's the same situation here, men shouldn't walk around with there butts out if they don't want people making statements. I think that the entertainers have a responsibility when it comes to the images they potray, but we can not blame this completely on them.  It's up to the parents and society, we have gotten away from the RIGHT thing to do, and we have start going along with what's acceptable.  I am glad someone took a stand because if I had to hire one of these guys they would forever be jobless.
