Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Hi Dr. Phil,  I would consider myself an educated person brought up in a good setting by my 2 great parents.  I am a 36 year old white male.  I have very strong opinions on this issue.  First of all I do not think it is strictly a race issue.  Baggy pants are part of a variety of different cultures, I AM VERY SAD TO SAY.  Second of all,  baggy pants has a direct impact on my shopping experience.  I probably do not shop as much as I should however when I do explain to me why I can never find the correct waist size at stores.  I have an answer.  this is because every one of these individuals who choose to wear baggy pants are wearing my size pants.  A 36 inch waist.  They deplete the stores inventory and I can never find my size in stock.  I full y support a ban on baggy pants. I think parents need to step up to the plate and monitor the cloths that the kids wear.  It is unacceptable.  Message to the baggy pants people.  You look ridiculous.  You are ridiculous.  Grow up get a job and look presentable, not like a hoodlum.  The joke is " I wouldn't worry to much about these people running from the police they would trip." The bottom line is people who wear baggy pants present themselves as uneducated, no parent supervision and most of all look like an idiot. If they spent half the time looking for a job as they did by pulling up their pants I guess I wouldn' fault them.  Don't hand me this garbage " I need to express myself." Grop up get a job and look professional.  Please ban baggy pants.  I guess this is worst of all.  These baggy pants people are the future of our country.  Help Us Dr. Phil.

They are rediculous?  Come on, that's a pretty immature statement for a thirty six year old to make.  For all you know they could be completly kind, rational, intellectual, and sensible people in those pants. You can't just judge them on the premace of what they wear. [I know a lot of people do, but, hey, I'm sure you are smarter than that. =D.]

Listen, I don't enjoy the baggy pants fad, but I respect an individual's right to wear them. The government is gradually stripping us of our liberties, and, no offense, but it's people like you- who want govermental officials to step in and forbid people to do things that they should be free to do- that allow that to happen. If we aren't carefull, America could turn to a communist society, and the next thing you know, people aren't going to be allowed to wear shirts with crosses because people are offened by them, anyhing involving a racial remark, or a "politically incorect thought" will be eliminatedand all in all the United States, a place where life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness is upposed to be granted to every man, and woman in the nation, is going to come with it's on dress code- and, mister, in a society like that, clothing articles would be the least of our problems. =_=;.

We have no right to tell other human beigs what they can and can' wear in the same way as we cant force them to feel as we feel or express themselves in th way we want them to.  If a peson wants to wear a certain article of cloathing, let them wear it, man! =P. It's not like they are hurting anyone. The bottom line is, though we may not all like the way it looks on others, or ourselves, what someone wears is the individual's decision, and the rest of us should just deal with it. So long as no one is doing, or selling drugs, robbing banks, vadalising property, or hurting anyone physically, we should just let them be. By learning to understand and respect even the smallest differences between one another, we are closer to acheiving the eternal dream of peace. :3.

>>>>>And, for God's sake, sir, you can just go one size larger, and purchas a belt, or just shop online. [The internet is magical that way. ;D.] The world isn't going to implode if a store runs out of size 36 pants. xD.

                                                                                                                                                                  You're buddy,

                                                                                                                                                                            Liennin.

[I am well aware, also, of the fact that my last sentence ruined the overall appeal of my comment. x_x;.]

Marky Mark?

I was thinking that "Marky Mark" started this fashion craze in his underwear commercials many many years ago by having the top of his boxers show above his waistline/pants.  I say, dont sweat it, this like all else will eventually pass.....only thing I fear is, how low are they gonna get before they stop?

it's all bs!

why are baggy pants or people who wear baggy pants being targeted for this specific problem? i ask because why are people not commenting on the fact that some fat men who wear tool belts, have their butt crack showing  and nobody is legislating anything about that! i think that at the end of the day, it's about black people being embarrassed about something that isn't their business, and white people feeling that when you sag, you are a thug. why can't we just let people live their own life and dress the way they want? i don't want to see someone's boxer shorts either, but i don't automatically assume that the person is a thug. for the record, i don't want to see anyone's stinking ass crack either!

the baggy pants thing

Quote From: famlefamle

every generation has a clothing fad. i remember in the early 60's my dad said he was embarrassed to have anyone know he was my Father because they would think that he wouldn't buy me any clothes. my jeans had more patches than original material. as far as a gun could be hidden in th baggy clothes,  that's just a sad sign of the times.  a gun could be hidden in a trench coat too. shall we band those also?
I've watched kids wear their pants and their t-shirts down to their knees this ways for over 15 years.  I thought the same thing - it will go away just like other fads.  What concerns me is that these baggy pants are being used to hide a multitude of things besides their butts.  Being a teacher - I've seen it all.

a solution?

I just had to add... where are all of our fashion designers during all of this controversy?  Why aren't they creating clothes that will help to satisfy everyone?  I have a great idea for it, but no money to invest in creating it... something that could make everyone happy!  Isn't that how we've resolved many of our fashion issues in the past?  We design more appropriate clothes to give the same visual effect.

Baggy Pants

OK, first of all baggy pants are a "fashion Statement" (and I say that loosely!)
but making LAWS about them???? That will never work! Who is the judge on that one?
Ridiculous!
Personally, I think they look AWFUL. There is nothing more idiotic than watching someone TRYING to walk with there @ss hanging out, and holding up there pants at the crotch with one hand!

My Theory: The LOWER your pants, the LOWER your IQ!

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: cheyanne2008

why should it matter if anyone wears baggy pants that dont mean that they're causing trouble
Wow...Okay well I think some people take being predjudice as an automatic BAD thing...Im sorry it isn't. Everyone Everywhere pre-judges things. It is a must! If you didnt you probably wouldnt survive long in this world. I think that some people are racist or sexist and thats bad...But if two guys came into my store...One was black, well dressed, groomed, polite...The other was white, baggy clothes, ass hanging out, unable to form a sentence...WHO do you think I would be thinking "someones going to cause trouble..." Now how you dress isnt a 100% reflection of your character but in a world where you could die because you trusted the wrong person...Would you not be likely to pre-judge someone on looks? And maybe every once and a while you would be wrong...But I would rather be wrong about someone being bad then just assuming everyone is okay, and I think that how a person CHOOSES to portray themselves is a good reflection on their character...SO yes I would say that maybe it doesnt mean they are going to cause trouble...BUT im going to assume they are more likely...And thats my freedom :) So in a way it sort of works out...sort of...

Girls Do It Too.

I do not think it is fair for there to be a law against baggy pants.  I agree that no on wants to see someones undergarments, but if it's not ok for guys to sag then why is it ok for women and young girls to walk around with low cut tops on showing way too much cleavage, short shorts with their butts hangin out of the bottom of them?  If it is not ok for men then it should not be ok for women.  Also the ying yang twins have some of the most disgusting lyrics, for example, the "whisper" song, if they want to be romodels for some of these young kids they should start by changing their some of their lyric choices.

One thing not pointed out on the show

They never pointed out that on beaches they regulate how much skin is showing for women's swimsuits.

I think this is relevant because like the one kid pointed out on the show they don't care, that is why they show the world their behind, and that is why we judge them, and that is why people that do this are helping to promote the racial divide.  It is about decency not race, I'm glad the Texas mayor is black to deflate the issue, baggy pants should be banned and no apology should have been given to the gay community.  I find their immorality offensive too.
