Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

What I think

I personally think that the government should not ban baggy pants because it is every American's right to dress in the manner that they see fit. However, I do think that this so called "fashion statement" is disgusting and disrespectful to others. No one wants to see another person's butt; whether that is the baggy pants and underwear with guys or the thongs and butt cracks with girls. I think that people should be respectful and not show off their butts or underwear. In fact, the whole point of the word "underwear" is to say that it must be worn under another article of clothing. If a person is wearing baggy pants that show off their underwear, then it is not actually under the clothing.

As a future teacher, it really annoys me when I see students wearing their pants so low that you can see their underwear. It is especially wrong in the schools, because the schools have a dress code and sagging pants are not allowed - just as low cut shirts or tanktops are not allowed for the girls. It is incredibly disrespectful for a boy, or anyone else, to dress in this way at school. It is distracting to others and shows a lack of respect for authority.

As a woman, I feel that the sagging pants is disrespectful. Just because someone doesn't mind showing off their butt to the world doesn't mean that I want to see it - anymore than I want to see a girl's butt and thong. I think that guys should respect themselves and others by not wearing their pants in this way.

ha is this serious? it has nothing to do with NOT RESPECTING YOURSELVES its about being comfortable and enjoying the way you look.. so lets say bans did end up coming into play and making people not be able to wear what makes them feel unique, or comfortable... how much self asteem will be lost... this is society these days. and if you dont enjoy the FEW freedoms we have left.. then go someplace where you can be dictated in every aspect of your life!
It has EVERYTHING to do with RESPECT....do you even know what that IS?

Pull up your pants Houston

I live in the 4th largest city in America and the baggy pants issue is running wild. It's not just one ethnic group or even just the teens. The younger kids are  even sporting baggy pants too!! I think even the girls are wearing baggy paints. Seeing baggy pants utterly disgust me. The Dallas offical has a good idea, more awareness through billboards will prompt people to think about how they are affecting the members of thier familes.  I've tried walking around my house with my pants in the baggy style and I found it very, very uncomfortable and hard to walk.  Also  Dr. Phil mentioned that Jordan wears baggy pants when he performs with his band but all of the times that Jordan has been on his dads show he didn't appear to being  wearing baggy pants but being in a band maybe the reason he does sport baggy pants. Jordan pull your pants up please.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: loccqueen1

why are baggy pants or people who wear baggy pants being targeted for this specific problem? i ask because why are people not commenting on the fact that some fat men who wear tool belts, have their butt crack showing  and nobody is legislating anything about that! i think that at the end of the day, it's about black people being embarrassed about something that isn't their business, and white people feeling that when you sag, you are a thug. why can't we just let people live their own life and dress the way they want? i don't want to see someone's boxer shorts either, but i don't automatically assume that the person is a thug. for the record, i don't want to see anyone's stinking ass crack either!
I don't want ANYones' BUTT CRACK pushed on me....no matter WHAT they are wearing!

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

So, basically you want laws to enforce dress codes to make sure everyone is presentable according to your standards.

Lets say I see an old lady with a huge woolly red and green santa-faced Christmas sweater, or a big, ugly, neon orange floral dress. Should I be able to ban ugly patterns and ill-fitting shoulder pads because I think that they make women look "ridiculous"?

How will police even enforce this? How baggy is too baggy? Will the police measure the amount of bagginess? I've seen guys wear pants about five times too big, (I dont even know how they get them to stay up) and I also know guys who get just a size or two bigger, so they have slightly baggy pants. Will the (hypothetical) law cover only REALLY baggy pants, or will anyone get fined for daring to wear their pants a size or two big? What if I'm feeling sick and I want comfortable, baggy pants and they're too baggy? What if some people just don't like tight pants?

I just wonder how people define these baggy pants. My boyfriend wears pants a size bigger just because he doesnt want them too tight on his waist. Theyre not really, really baggy, theyre only slightly baggy. The word baggy sounds weird after a while when I think about it a lot.

Yes, people need to choose their own clothes.

If your boyfriends pants are "Baggy" and he wears them like that because he doesnt want to be uncomfortable...then umm that makes no sense and is a cop out. If he wore his pants to "fit" they would be neither tight nor baggy...they would fit...duh...

Baggy pants

I think everyone missed the mark.  The saggy pant wearers normally hold up their pants in the front.  This appears that they are holding their penis.  This is what I find offensive, not looking at their underwear from behind.  Afterall, until recently, every girl walking down the mall looked like a plumber!

baggy pants

It upsets me to think that "the baggy pants" is such a big issue in Dallas. As long as the kids wear a shirt that covers their behinds, it's okay. Where I live (dallas) that is how it is. So why doesn't the government worry more about the homeless, child abuse, spousal abuve, drugs and gangs, then this issue. My boys (all 5) wore their pants saggin' at one point. Then they got older and now they are just baggy. I think that if they are going to continue to make this an issue, then they need to pass a law that say "women cover up". Many women walk around with the cheeks of their butts showing and way too much cleveage. But that seems to be ok.  Come on, you have more important things to worry about then how people fress.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: tslittlen

It's really sad how this is a racial issue when there are plenty of white and other races who wear their pants this way. Its NOT just black people. This also has nothing to do with music. There are guys who sing pop and metal and rock who wear their pants low. What about Travis Barker of Blink 182? He's white and sings rock. Making a law will not do anything. People will get around it and continue to do what they want. Why doesn't the government and the people trying to create a ban on this put this much effort into more important issues.
This is not a racial issue, and what ever gave you the idea that it was?????? I agree with you that there are much more important issues at hand. LIKE getting our children to stay in school and getting an education. Instead of hanging out roaming the streets, doing drugs having sex with as many people they can get their hands on. This goes for every RACE, RELIGION,SEXUAL ORIENTATION, MALE OR FEMALE. If I left anyone out let me know. I wouldn't want to be accused of profiling

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

I personally do not think it is right for men and young men to walk around with there pants hanging off the behind and there boxers showing but I also do not agree with women and girls G-string or bra showing. I don't think the government should try to control what people wear. All this starts at home with with there parents and the different morals they  teach there children. I also don't think the Hip-Hop community should be blamed for this "fad" if we are going to blame them for "saggin" then shouldn't the Country Music Industry be blamed for Acholism or Cheating and the Rock Community be blamed for Depression and Drugs. I didn't think so. Again I think that what People do today is there business and the only people who should be able to control there actions is them or there parents. I don't think this issue is racial but I do think it is stereotypical and extremely controversial. I will end with saying that there are bigger problems going on in this world than how people dress.

Ugly, but not against the law

Of many fad fashions, this is one of the ugliest. That being said, the government has NO business imposing a dress code. Womens clothing currently shows way more bare skin, but has anyone proposed a law against it? Schools have a duty to impose dress codes, as do work places, but not a law.  Parents have the right to impose a dress code on their minor children too. It is not a racial issue either. The more attention given to it, the more you will see it. Leave it alone and it will eventually go the way of all fashion fads.

However, you have to accept that some people will form opinions based on your dress. That is their right. I wouldn't hire someone dressed that way any more than I would hire a women with her chest or belly hanging out. So, you have the right to wear it and we have the right to make judgements based on what you wear.

Sometimes I dress funny, and when I do, I don't care what people think. But I wouldn't apply for a job or a bank loan in other than business attire.
