Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: momomcg

Unfortuantely Dr. Phil I rea;ly do not think you did a great job today as usual unfortunately as to much of the show was spent with only two parties on the board being heard and that was not understandable as all they did was yell over one another, but I do think the government has no business imposing laws on "droopy drawers" it is a parents place just as what a women wears is usually representative of her self esteem perhaps this also is directly related to self-esteem and what a person wishes to project...baggy pants start at home!!!!
I very much agree with you, and the fact that baggy pants start at home. We, as parents let our children know what is acceptable and what is not. It is our jobs, and our rights to teach our children right from wrong.

Baggy Pants are much better than seeing butt cleavage.

I honestly don't mind seeing kids wearing baggy pants so long as they are wearing underwear.  What I find more offensive is when girls are wearing the hipster pants and their butt cleavage is bared for all the world to see.  Gross.  (Is that supposed to be sexy?)

It's about respect

I believe that the baggy pants are solely a respect issue...........Nothing else! Respect is the state of being regarded with honor or esteem. I would not give you my bank number or have you watch my kids if you came to me wearing baggy pants, but I would not order you to respect/regard my wishes and pull them up either. We all need to have enough respect for each other in order to live together in society. Regardless of race, individuals from all walks of life have made sacrifices to be able to live in communities. I teach my children to dress with respect for others. Wear clothes that fit your body. Unless your going to be a plumber…….just kidding ;). When my kids pants are a little to low I tell them….Just say no to crack, they know to pull them up.

Both Sides

As a teacher I appreciate the fact that this issue is being talked about, however I don’t believe there was due justice to both sides of what I consider to be the issue.  I don’t appreciate having to see students’ underwear hanging out all the time… but it goes for girls as much if not more than boys.  At least with the boys they have something covering their butt.  Girls have their g-strings hanging out all the time and there is nothing covering their behinds!  I agree that it is disrespectful, and it is a “fashion trend” that could end tomorrow as far as I’m concerned.  I think I should have the choice whether I see your butt or not… and quite frankly I’m not getting that choice very often.  If you are going to come into my place of work, have some respect for me and “express” yourself in a more tasteful way.

Who Cares?

Do I like it? No  Do I care? NO! I have a family to care for.  I dont have time or the energy to worry about how others dress. Get a life.

The Baggy Pants Debate Doctor Phil Doctor Phil I am staying out of this debate because if I do debate----

then I will get into trouble. See you on Monday Janurary 28th, 2008.  Sincerley Your. Russell Vlaanderen.---

I'm from London, Ontario, Canada and i just watched todays episode about baggy pants, from the ages of 13-17 i use to wear baggy pants, and the reason why i use to wear it was not just because of hip-hop but also because i use to think i was "gangster" hip hop isnt the only reason why baggy pants are being worn, like im surprised no one brought up the topic about gangsters. I dont speak for everyone, but for my self when i grew up more I learned baggy pants isnt for me. My parents didnt do much about the choice of clothing i was wearing, because they knew i was gonna learn on my own what i will encounter when i wear that style and go out. Im not against it, its the persons choice. I know the subject is jsut about baggy pants, but if the Governor ofd Dallas is gonna ban baggy pants than they should also banned, goth cloths or other type of style, because they both give out "bad" images.

Baggy Pants - Knock the table

I am surprised no one has talked about what the baggy pants represent. I guess it has gotten popular enough and wide spread enough that even kids dont know where it came from. I was locked up in El Paso Texas 15 years ago. ALL the spanish youth wore their pants this way. It was a known fact back then that this habit came from emulating people who were locked down. People who were in the penetentiary. How did this look come about. Well I was never at a Federal Institution but was told the habit was the same. When you get there no matter what size you are you get a set of clothes to wear. I am a 42 long in size but I was given a pair of pants that if sized correctly would have been about a 38 waist 32 length. At the time I was more of a 32 waist and 38 lenght. So I wore baggy pants that were to short. This was the avg size of all clothes given to prisoners. This was not a black thing back then but more of a Spanish thing. If you dont know what knock the table is ask someone who has been down!

Baggy Pants

First of all it has everything to do with the Parents.  I do not believe it is a racial thing.  I have a son and we raised him to dress appropriately and now at 19 he does.  My Husband would not even let him wear his cap on backwards.  Our school out here is still Old School with dress codes.  Your shirts must be tucked in.  It is mainly so they can tell if anyone is packing a gun, etc.  The shorts can be only and inch or two not sure above the knees as well as the skirts.  No earrings, boys or girls.  Girls shirts have to be covering their skin.  No inappropriate writings on clothes.  No rebels flags on their clothes, which is recently a new rule.  My son liked it because of Dukes of Hazard.  See that is an opinion also.

I believe this is great for School or Work and I believe Parents need to enforce the rules for Kids clothes and they will grow up the way you taught them.  It is all in the way the parents raise the kids to look nice, tuck in your shirt when appropriate, etc...They had to at school.  I do not like the baggy and low pants at all and I do judge when I see someone wearing them. Just can't help it!  I also do not like tattoos even though a lot people get them.  My Husband told my son not to come home with piercing or tattoos and now that he is 19 he feels the same way.    Not that it is right or wrong,  it is just wrong for us.   I was raised different and so was my Son.  He is 19 and now and a fine young man.  People always tell us we really did a good job.  OK that is enough bragging.  I am not sure the Government should have the right to ban them.  This is freedom of choice.  I would like it myself but I just don't know what to think about making it a law.  I would want to make tattoos and piercing for boys banned also, but that is just my feelings.  I think the schools and workplace just ban the baggy pants and body piercing and earrings for boys for sure.  There is dress codes for places that I worked in the business world such as women had to wear hose, men had to wear socks and suits.  Friday was casual day until some people abused it by wearing inappropriate attire.  This is LIFE get use to it.  We might be a little anal to some, but we sure have a great young man because of it.

And that is my opinion for what it's worth.
