Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

I agree with you

Quote From: bigron

Hi Dr. Phil,  I would consider myself an educated person brought up in a good setting by my 2 great parents.  I am a 36 year old white male.  I have very strong opinions on this issue.  First of all I do not think it is strictly a race issue.  Baggy pants are part of a variety of different cultures, I AM VERY SAD TO SAY.  Second of all,  baggy pants has a direct impact on my shopping experience.  I probably do not shop as much as I should however when I do explain to me why I can never find the correct waist size at stores.  I have an answer.  this is because every one of these individuals who choose to wear baggy pants are wearing my size pants.  A 36 inch waist.  They deplete the stores inventory and I can never find my size in stock.  I full y support a ban on baggy pants. I think parents need to step up to the plate and monitor the cloths that the kids wear.  It is unacceptable.  Message to the baggy pants people.  You look ridiculous.  You are ridiculous.  Grow up get a job and look presentable, not like a hoodlum.  The joke is " I wouldn't worry to much about these people running from the police they would trip." The bottom line is people who wear baggy pants present themselves as uneducated, no parent supervision and most of all look like an idiot. If they spent half the time looking for a job as they did by pulling up their pants I guess I wouldn' fault them.  Don't hand me this garbage " I need to express myself." Grop up get a job and look professional.  Please ban baggy pants.  I guess this is worst of all.  These baggy pants people are the future of our country.  Help Us Dr. Phil.
Hey I agree with you ALMOST ALL OF THE WAY I think that guys that wear baggy pants are UUUGGGLLY and I think that they do look like someone from a gang and so forth I REALLY don't like seeing guys wearing things like that BUT and that is a big BUTT I still don't agree with telling them that they can't wear it just because I have that opinion about them well that is the way I am and maybe other people feel that way too but if they don't care enough about the way they look to maybe pull up their pants they would rather look like bums off the street well then that is their problem really BUT I DO NOT like what woman wear either and they discust me as much as those guys wearing their pants down low I  mean what kind of woman has no respect for herself that she has to walk around exposing everyone to her body her private spots we don't care if she got breast implants and is proud of them or got some other surgery to her body that she wants to show it off that is AS DISGUSTING to me as guys who wear baggy pants we don't want to see your underwear but I REALLY agree that that is better then woman showing their BARE SKIN HELLO I would rather see a guys underwear then a womans breasts or other part of their body so why don't they make a rule that everyone has to wear one piece swim suits no more wearing shirts that show the belly button whether you put your arms up or not no more tight pants or really short shorts or skirls that show off their underwear all shorts and skirts have to be to the knees or longer, whenever they should make a rule that if a girl where's pants that are too low and  they lean down and show their underwear they should automatically get a ticket because those things I said above about woman are just offensive to me as guys who show their underwear actually in a way more offensive to be honest you probably get my point so all I am trying to say is they shouldn't make a rule about that unless they want to make a rule about other things as well and just not give people the right to choose what they wear

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: frankowski

This is really wronge to judge people about how  their dress. I notice that when Dr Phil said what happens when a female having their thongs showing and boobs showing I don't think anyone is saying anything to them . I don't see a law on how a female  should  dress. This world is so for telling people how to eat, how to dress how to act .  The world need to forces on war guns and crimes not on people clothes, I feel like a damn robot .   we can't wear this we can't eat that ,watch what you say! what ever happen to justs being human not worring what other thinks or say. The world is so prejudes it isn't funny. For Black people we are damn if we do and damn if we are! The world is alway blaming african american on everthing (leave us alone ). It a free world why can't we just live in a world that isn't telling us what to do. We are now living in a world were they are trying to control people.  the law need to forces on more important things . I am very disapointment  at this world for being so controversal over something that is'nt  worth the aggervasion , What happens when a female wears baggy pant? I am a female who wears baggy pant  stop the hate Why can't we express ourself? I feel like they are making us  to be like robot, where we all have to dress to the nine!
I love the last few lines, that sums it up right there, and the fact that america does blame the black people..... but if you want to ever get away from that kind of government, come up to Canada, were a little more accepting

Not Racial

Quote From: cate63

Why does everything have to be about race?  I have two very white boys in a small town in Wisconsin who wear their pants low (I do not like it either, by the way) and they have plenty of friends who do the same.

We are never going to make race issues better until we stop forcing everything into the race category.

I agree, I wish this was not presented as an race issue.  The majority of young people dress this way.  I have yet to see a man wear a tight fitting suit.  I dont want to see anyone wear pants as tight as Austin Powers.  I see white, asian, african americans, hispanic, etc wear very loose fitting clothing.  From skaters, to beat boxers, its the american culture.  lets not focus on just the men but the women as well who wear butt cheek exposed skirts and shorts where they roll them up so high a yeast infection is in the making.  this should apply to both sexes.

what about other issues in the world?

Aren't there millions of other issues in the world that we need to worry about? There are millions of starving children in the world. Where is the law for that? There are thousands of children dropping out of school everyday. Why are we not focusing on that issue? Are you really going to waste time to pass a law about what someone chooses to wear, even though this is suppose to be a free country? If you want to tell people what to wear, then you need to start dishing out some money to pay for those clothes you want to see people in. Until then, SHUT UP AND FOCUS ON SOMETHING THAT'S WORTH IT!!!!!!

Baggy Pants??

I am 60 yrs old.  In the fifties and early sixties skin tight "pegged" pants were the in thing for that "hip look".  In the late sixties, seventies, and into the eighties loose bell bottom pants were the "hip look", even going as far as elephant bells.  Now it's baggy pants that show your underwear.  This too shall pass!!!!  Since when do we get so up tight over fashion for pants that we have talk shows just about that.  Pass a law to ban what we wear, hopefully this too shall pass by the way ( the pants look and the law idea ).  We have had flappers, gone.  We have had the Victorian look, gone.  We had the depression look, gone thank the good Lord.  Wait another five minutes and something worse will come along!  THAT'S LIFE!!!!

BAGGY PANTS

Quote From: wettdogg

I don't understand what the problem is.

There is a difference between baggy pants & your butt & "UNDER"wear hanging out.

Baggy pants still fit around your waist. If you check the size of pants it has a waist size not thigh size.

We were taught from our parents that you dress for success. At no point would I have been hired walking into potential employers looking like that and I am a white chick! It seems to me that black people wear their feelings on there sleeves and should get over theirselves. It's not acceptable from any race and definately not mine. It is replusive to see butt crack and these "baggy" pants. Eveybody just needs to put this stuff back where it belongs. Otherwise, just grab a fig leaf, what the hell. Why spend money on clothing at all?? It would probably look better than this and safer too, wouldn't have to fall when you try and run. HAHAHA

THANKYOU! WAY TO GO!!!!

It's not about color!

I am a high school teacher and I can't believe that people are making the baggy pants issue about race. What about all the kids wearing these new skinny jeans down around their knees? I don't want to see other people's rear ends at school, or the mall or anywhere else. The issue is about behinds not race!

Baggy Pants Debate

I have a 22 year old stepson, who constantly wears this kind of pant and walks like a duck in order to keep the pants from falling down!

My opinion on those are very negative and I feel that the young men who wear these will develop major alignment deformities down the road, since their gait walk will throw their whole spine out of whack!  No one bothered to mention this added concern regarding their future retarded physical appearance and health issues which would lead to another added financial drain on the whole health system down the road.

Pertaining to women who also dress inappropriately, I do agree that they need to clean up their act also.  I do not watch soap operas, but sometimes flick over one and all the women, young and old, are dressed like they're going to a party, and look like high classed hookers.  This blatant flaunting of boobs, midriffs and thighs has been going on for years and should be stopped.  What kind of a message is that sending to our young women.  It's not a wonder that so many are getting plastic surgery at a very young age these days!  Overall, women in general have allowed themselves to be exploited and yet it doesn't seem to bother them!   Then we wonder why men are turned on and rape innocent children!  But that's another show!
