Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Fashion for the Wrong People.

The trouble with street fashion is that it spreads. I have had the  unpleasant experience of seeing the"butt crack"s of 50 year old+ white men who think this is hot!!

Leisure Suit of the new millenium...and I hope this"statement" dies a quick death. Most states ban neon under the car, too, so what's wrong with a law to ban butt-exposure? The way to get noticed is to earn lotsa money, buy a Hummer and a suit from Armani! Oh, and a small amount of bling...

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: sharese81

There are tons of different races in the USA.  How could you not have come into contact with any blacks other than the ones in jail?  Where you trying to make a valid point?  Or trying to start a debate?  Or are you just really closed off to the world?  Do you come into contact with any other races at all?
I think by that person saying that they only come in contact with blacks is in jail is a racist comment, that is no way to validate a point..... how about this, cause I am gay, I can say that the only straight people I see are people who are just looking for one night stands, its inacurate because my parents are straight, because I see straight people on a daily basis, a person cannot say that they only see black people in jail, unless they are racist.... thats something that IS against the law, and should definetly be inforced more

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: wettdogg

This statement is ridiculous. And the word wear is wear not ware unless your talking tupperware.

This type of dress promotes lack of motivation and self-esteem. If a fine were not imposed then eventually I believe that most people with this type of dress would go on to commit crimes. I doubt that their parents started dressing them this way and supported it all along. It is a sign of rebellion. Nip it in the bud.

Never mind the molestation that this can promote for girls and boys. We are not talking about baggy pants here. Pants fit around the waist but if your trying to fit tupperware then maybe it would go around the full part of the bowl.

Yeah!  And it's YOU'RE, not YOUR!  So you get it right!

What?  I figured if we were going to throw stones at those too obtuse to use spell check, I'd toss a stone, too.

Baggy Pants

I did not think that this was as huge of an issue as it is. Baggy Pants is a trend, but how did it become such a big trend? This trend does not appeal to me and I do not think that this trend should be erased. Everyone has a right to say and display their fashion as they please, providing that it is within reason. But that comes to the question, what is within reason? As for me, I would say that Baggy Pants are definiately not within reason and is not a fashion. Is shows laziness and it does not show too much class.

Thanks for hearing me out.

Jay

who cares

I Personally dont care for baggy pants. I dont say or do anything about it because im not the one walking around with my pants below my ass so who cares. Some people just want to exress themselves in the way of baggy pant wearing. There are lots of things in life that you may or may not agree with. I think people should just let it go and learn to deal with people that are different from you.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: annieruck1

This is dead in the water, Why? Because even though this dress style is worn by whites, blacks, hispanics etc.. because the authorities want to try to protect the american public, it gets turned into a racial issue.  The contention will be that all the other people stole thier clothing idea and because of it, it gives them a "license" to profile.. That the "man" is opressing them once more with One more thing to add to thier list.

Poppy cock!!!!!!  as  a White, working class FEMALE, I am 2x more likely to be discriminated against in this country.  I am of Scotch/Irish decent and cannot take pride in my heritage, If I do I am thrown in with biggots and idiotic hood wearing fools, and am called a racist for doing so.  The Double standard has got to go.  Trying to be fair across the board is being thrown out the window, because a select few want to feel persecuted as their ancesters were so that they can preserve the special treeatment they so often get in this country for throwing out the race card. Its rediculous! Wake up.

Well, ma'am, I'm afraid you failed to convey your feelings toward the actuall debate about baggy pants, here, but since you mentioned protecting the American public, and called out the people wearing baggy pants as biggots, and "idiotic hood wearing fools" [a.k.a. "hoodlums" =P.] I'm going to go out on a limb here and asume you think the government should stop peope from whereing baggy pants. Forgive me if I misinturpreted you.

Now, I agree with the fact that this is most definetly not a racial issue. Blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, indians, and just about every mix of the lot have some one who shares there race whom, simultainiously, wore baggy pants. I also agree with the fact that double standarts are proposterous! Either everyone an do it, or no one can. That's how it should work. But, hey, If you don't like double standarts, you shouldn't say it's bad for us to wear pants revealing our boxers, but it's okay or you to wear things like tubetops, or really skimpy dresses. Dx. Women reveal more than just their underwhere many times through shirts that are blatantly either too tight or cut too low. Why would anyone consider it indecent exposure if a man wears jeans that are bellow his buttox, revealing boxer shorts, but is not the case when women do the very same, only with there undergarments? That's a bit hipocritical on your part, aint it?

We don't need thegovernment to step in and tell us how to dress. Can't we handle that ourselves? If someone is sagging, can't you look the othe way? When does personal resposibility become an issue? Who defines what's decent and what's not? We shoud be careful of what we let the goverment have control over. Haven't we given up enough  of our civil liberties already? Listen, I don't take part in this fad, but people- it's just a fad. It was bound to be in style for a few years, and sooner or later, it'l stop. That's the nature of these types of things. Just leave it alone.

Life in the real world

Hmm. So, you believe that people should not be judged by what they wear?  Wake up!  You ARE judged by what you wear, how you wear it, your hair style, your shoes. First impression and all that.  It is that way of society. All societies.  If a woman in an Islamic state does NOT wear what she is enforced to wear, she will probably be murdered.

I judge people by how they dress themselves: it can show me how they respect themself and others. I absolutely do not believe this is a racial issue.  It is a FASHION issue. My son (descended of Northern Europeans) wears baggy pants. I bought him a belt. I do not want to see his boxers or his butt. I don't want to see anyone else's either.  He wears the belt and long t-shirts to cover himself.  He likes the style and I have no complaint when he takes the care and bother to respect me to not show me his privates.  To be honest, I have much less of an opinion of males who wear baggy pants than those who dress "up".  I figure if you can't even manage to pull your pants up then you are not worth hiring, you have no respect for others, no respect for yourself and no future.

Nor do I want to see boobs, thongs or butt cracks.

This is not about "African American", "Asian American", "Northern European American" or any other race. It is simply about taste, class and respect.

I have a tatoo but you'll never see it unless I want you to.  My butt is also private.

Go ahead, be yourself, dress however you want.  Show your butt, your boobs, your thongs, etc. to someone you WANT to see those parts. Not to those of us in the rest of the world who are absolutely not interested in seeing you "express" yourself.  Oh, I am firmly against any ban on baggy pant or cleavage wear or low-cut women's pants.  No, really - wear what you want.  I just don't want to see it.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

This is just rediculous! America was built on capitalism, freedom of speech and expression. GET OVER IT! THERE JUST PANTS!

I mean jesus! Isn't there some places in the USA where women can walk around with their tits hanging out? You know whuts disrespectful? Telling people you how to live their lives!

I just can't believe that in the United States a person can go to jail or get a big fat fine for how they wear their clothes but can get away scott free for animal abuse or any other crime of the sort. A person could beat a dog to death and get a one thousand dollar fine but if their wearing low pants could go to jail!! Some people really need to get their priorities straight!

Mankind has evolved to gain a unique ability to reason and solve problems, clearly some are experiencing something called de-evolution

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: shmigelz

First off, so called 'Reverend' Al Sharpton really has to get off his 'pro black' and 'anti-white' person views. All he ever says is that black people always get the short end of the stick and always get treated unfairly BUT YET all the so called 'white people' never get any flak or any trouble for wearing the same things that black people or doing the same things that black people.Give me a break. For someone who calls himself a reverend, you sure are a BLACK person loyalist and against the white person...Sadd for a person of GOD.

Punks who wear baggy pants are just that.....Punks who have no clue how stupid and pathetic and funny they look. When I go to the mall and see ANYONE wearing baggy pants I just shake my head and say "That person looks really stupid and has no idea how bad they are making themselves look."

for one, the reverand is making the right statement because thats where the profiling is for this topic, if you didnt notice over 80% of the guys they showed were black and looked like punks... another thing too, you can make the look so that you are a respectable person of society
