Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

for one, the reverand is making the right statement because thats where the profiling is for this topic, if you didnt notice over 80% of the guys they showed were black and looked like punks... another thing too, you can make the look so that you are a respectable person of society

Saggy, not baggy

Dr. Phil does not get much accomplished on his show. Of course, he did his best not to offend anyone supporting saggy pants. How about asking what people want to know? How do people who wear saggy pants function in the real world? How do they play sports without injuring themselves? How do they look for jobs? How do they run? Isn't it annoying having to pull up or adjust your pants every couple of minutes?

The Baggy Pants Debate

Hi Dr Phill. I feel if pepole knew the real meaning of the sag the wouldn't be so quick to sag. The sag started in prison by the homosexuals to symbolize there homosexuality. People need to man up or be a woman and be reasonable for there kids and stop blaming everything but themselves. As a parent you should be teaching your children not MTV.

a suggestion

Dear Dr. Phil hi I love what you do , i am studying to become a psychologist , you had a great show today, a lot of views that i agree with, and some that i do not. Dr. phil my suggestion here is that you need to invite kids on your show with different age groups  and different ethnicities and different sex's and ask them the questions that parents and people are concerened with and we will give you the right awnser and you guys go about fixing it from there!

What has this world come to?

I am embarrased to be alive when baggy pants is even an issue. I have 4 brothers all of which shop at Hollister Co. and listen to rock/metal/pop/alternative music  AND THEY STILL SAG THEIR PANTS!!! Who cares, yes it is a fashion. If fines are going to be given for baggy pants then they better start to regulate all the women that where clothes that are too tight!! It is wrong to blame this on the Hip Hop culture. This all being said from a white female!

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: sharsherma

I have a 14 year old son who wears baggy pants every day. We are so happy this is the style.

My son almost died 4 years ago, he had a large section of his colon removed and now has a stoma and a bag. With the baggy style my son can wear jeans, the regular style of jeans leave no room for his bag, there is a large lump under the pants that is very noticeable. We love the baggy pants and shirts. My 14 year old who has been to hell and back can now where something that is comfortable for him.

We live in a very small town out in the country, there are the kids who wear baggy pants and then there are the kids that wear the pants that are so tight that I am in awe that they can even move in them.

Why are people so interested in what others wear?  Put that interest into your community or your own children, then baggy pants wouldn't be an issue.

Your msg struck a cord with me, so much so that I actually registered to reply.  My son also has an ostemy and he wears the baggy pants because they are more comfortable than than the tighter fitting jeans and yes, they help hide the bag.  He's not wearing them around his butt, but they are baggy.  He also likes cargo pants and, because we live near a military base, he can find old BDU and ACU pants.  Those are nice because they have adjustable tabs on the side.  He's even taken to wearing boxer shorts because they aren't as tight around the stoma as briefs.  Good Luck to your family.

Baggy Pants

Okay.  Why are we as a concerned society considering making a new law banning  baggy pants?

Because I do not believe we need it.  Because do we not in all cities and municipalities have laws governing lewd dressing and/or behavior?

In other words, people who wear baggy pants are already subject to being cited and fined for wearing lewd clothing.  All that we need to do is encourage law enforcement, school officials, etc. to cite the people wearing baggy pants.

I think this is preferable to the government telling me and everybody else exactly what clothiing we can wear.  And in case you are wondering, I think baggy pants are disgusting.  So fine them, fine the wearers, give them community service, whatever it takes.

Besides think about it, it's a form of saying, "I'm gonna do what I want to do,  being different," etc.  So if you ban baggy pants, I don't even want to think what the baggy pants wearers will think of next.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

I myself don't like the baggy pants.  I find them disgusting.  BUT if they make baggy pants illegal, then they need to do the same with short shorts, or short skirts.  I find them just as disgusting.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Please explain how saggy pants are comfortable which is one of the claims of a person on the show? A belt around your genitals can't be comfortable!!! I like the comment if they spent as much time looking for a job as they spend pulling up or adjusting their sags.

The Baggy Pants Debate

Dr. Phil:

Why is every topic about race.  This baggy pants debate does not only affect the "African-Americans"  I see it in Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian cultures as well.  Yes, it affects the African-Americans but this race debate of black, white, Hispanic, etc., is becoming the norm in every topic.  It is a shame that topic cannot be addressed for what it is and that is disrespect.  It is disrespect for others.  I don't want to see your boxers, I could care less what they look like.  I surely do not want my 80 year old mother or my eight year old granddaughter to see your butt.  They need to ask themselves, would I want my grandmother or my son/daughter to see my butt hanging out ?  If they answer this question yes, then they do not even have respect for themselves much less anyone else.

I believe that parents today have lost so many of the fundamental rights to punish their children's behavior.  Parents fear being called an abuser if they spank their child.  When I was raising my stepson, I told him, while you live in my house you will abide by my rules.  When you move out and live on your own you can do whatever you want.  If he disobeyed, he was spanked, grounded, or had his possessions taken away until such time that he earned the right to have them again.  He was expected to help around the house with the chores.  He was also given an allowance for extras that he did.  I expected him to dress and act like a young man when we were in public places and to respect not only myself and his dad, but other adults as well.  When he didn't, he was reprimanded.

I don't believe that the children of today have the morals that were instilled in us when our parents raised us.  There are so many more single parents today and it is very difficult to balance everything.  Parents today want their children to see them as a friend and not an authoritative figure.  Sometimes that works but it cannot be that way in every situation.  Someone has to say no and I think that parents today are afraid to say NO.
