Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

I don't agree but let it be.

I have a brother that sags his pants.  I think it's ridiculous and uncomfortable to wear your pants that low.  It's stupid to emulate and glorify jailhouse fashion.  I don't understand why anyone would want to spend the day yanking their pants up.  I also find it annoying to see people wearing pants that are too long that drag the ground.  Their pants are always torn and dirty.  I've noticed alot of employees at fast food resturants and other places wearing saggin pants, which is completely unprofessional.  I can't remember the last time I've seen a fast food employee in a uniform that fit.

With that being said I don't think legislation is thhe right way to go.  If that's the case way not legislate women's wear that is deemed too revealing.  We could legislate ourselves into dressing like the puritans or muslims.

As for the kids, there is absolutely no reason a child should be subjected to saggin.  Kids run around and play and saggin would only hinder their movement.  I buy my son's clothes to fit his body.  You can't always blame Hip Hop and TV for guiding your children in the wrong direction.  My son is 8 and I DO NOT allow him to watch music videos and other inappropriate TV shows.  I do understand that he will become a teenager and I will allow him leeway to make his own decisions about certain things.  But ultimately he will still be a minor child under my roof, thus it's still my responsibility to see him into adulthood.

Totally agree

Hi Dr. Phil,  I would consider myself an educated person brought up in a good setting by my 2 great parents.  I am a 36 year old white male.  I have very strong opinions on this issue.  First of all I do not think it is strictly a race issue.  Baggy pants are part of a variety of different cultures, I AM VERY SAD TO SAY.  Second of all,  baggy pants has a direct impact on my shopping experience.  I probably do not shop as much as I should however when I do explain to me why I can never find the correct waist size at stores.  I have an answer.  this is because every one of these individuals who choose to wear baggy pants are wearing my size pants.  A 36 inch waist.  They deplete the stores inventory and I can never find my size in stock.  I full y support a ban on baggy pants. I think parents need to step up to the plate and monitor the cloths that the kids wear.  It is unacceptable.  Message to the baggy pants people.  You look ridiculous.  You are ridiculous.  Grow up get a job and look presentable, not like a hoodlum.  The joke is " I wouldn't worry to much about these people running from the police they would trip." The bottom line is people who wear baggy pants present themselves as uneducated, no parent supervision and most of all look like an idiot. If they spent half the time looking for a job as they did by pulling up their pants I guess I wouldn' fault them.  Don't hand me this garbage " I need to express myself." Grop up get a job and look professional.  Please ban baggy pants.  I guess this is worst of all.  These baggy pants people are the future of our country.  Help Us Dr. Phil.
I have two sons, 45 & 38. Neither ever dressed so poorly. I agree it is totally disgusting. When I was a young girl, some boys wore their pants below the waist line but not below the cheeks of their butts like today. If people who don't have kids would stop telling parents they can't correct their kids, the problem would be less. The one dad  shouldn't say they will grow out of it since he also said he likes to wear his like that. Not grown up yet I guess. I want to pull up boys brenches everytime I see them with the pants nearly at their knees. Right on, will fall do to those baggies, so police will catch them. My husband has hard time finding his waist size also.

Fashion?, or statement?

I just had to weigh in on this one. I am a child of the 50's, and when I came of an age to care, and express myself, I just had to have the new 'Beatles' pointed-toe boots (with a one inch heel, no less). Had to! In any case - all of us, at some time in our life, struggle to understand how we are going to 'fit in'. If we are like most, we try be unique and different, just like evereyone else! The 'fad' of sagging pants will die a natural death and cease to be an issue; we don't need to stamp it out, or legislate it. Maybe I'm relaxed on this is because I'm Canadian, but I doubt it. I personally detest the practice (I find it slovenly, and think it shows a lack of respect for the wearer, of themselves) As Paul McCartney penned: "Live and let live"...and butt out (no pun intended).

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

The issue of baggy pants is just a small part of a larger issue and epidemic we currently have in America.  It is the issue of parents not taking the responsibility of raising their children.  It’s not a racial or cultural issue.  Those people who want to make all issues racial aren’t ever going to really help America solve any problems, they will just divide us further.  When people make the choice to have a child they have to take the responsibility of raising them too.  It should not be on the shoulders of the entertainment industry to teach your child how to speak, dress or act.  Children are exposed to an immense amount of media today and need the guidance of their parents more than ever.  It is your duty as a parent to explain to your children what is acceptable and unacceptable.  If you aren’t prepared to teach that information don’t become a parent.  You have to make time to be with your child and be the biggest positive influence in his/her life.  The entertainment industry didn’t give birth to your child so, it is not their responsibility to raise him/her.  Don’t get me wrong there are amazing people who are in the entertainment and media industries who are great to look up to. You are the one who is supposed to help your child distinguish those people who are to be looked up to and those who are to be seen only as entertainers.  Though I think baggy pants look terrible and are never to be worn in a situation where you are to look presentable such as at a job, I don’t think that wearing them makes someone a bad person.  It is who they are raised to be that makes him/her a good or bad person.  I don’t think the government should be spending tax payer’s HARD earned money debating pants size.  Just reading some of the responses to this show should open our eyes to the fact that many Americans still cannot properly form sentences or spell words.  It’s ridiculous.  I believe as Americans we have to be more careful of those people we elect into office with the power to waste our money debating and looking into issues that are solely based on opinion, rather than tackling issues that will resolve problems that affect the quality of American lives.  So, stop worrying about the fact that you know what color boxers the guy walking down the street is wearing and start worrying about whether he is educated enough to get a job that can provide food to eat and the ability to pay his bills.

Lastly, I find it amazing how the guests on the show ever thought that they were going to get anything accomplished when during a large portion of the show they were talking over one another, rather than taking turns voicing their opinions.  It was very irritating to try to listen to.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: sexydiva777

So let me get this right you want to band baggy pants because your shopping experience has been some how intruded upon. That is the most ridiculuos reason i have ever heard for taking away someones rights.

I agree with bigron, i find that the "gothic" people of this wolrd might worship the devil and I DONT LIKE IT!!!But do i have the right to tell them what to wear?  NO NO NO NO they have the right to wear what ever they want to they bought and if THEY LIKE IT, I LOVE IT.  You say that you CONSIDER yourself to be an educated man but if you are educated then that education should tell you that just because their pants are saggin does not mean that they are not educated what you see is not always what you get.  I have two teenage boys and they like to sagg thier pants and i allow it to an extent but they are BOYS not MEN!! There is an old saying that goes like this:  "when i was a child i behaved like a child but when i became and adult I put away childish things" Let these children be children go an find somethin else to do with your educated time.  DONT HAND ME THIS GARBAGE!!!!!! BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!!!!!!

well....to quote YOU...I suggest you 'put away childish things'... are you TOTALLY ignorant or what?  And BY THE WAY; that is NOT an 'OLD saying'...it is a SCRIPTURE from the Bible.....you would do WELL to HEED it!

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: thestarkfamily

I understand and i love gays. my uncle was gay and died of aids when i was 6 years old. i never really knew him but i hear he was a good man.  but one thing i learned from his sister ( my mother) it doesn't matter what anyone says if your gay and proud (that my uncle was) it doesn't matter. My uncle grew up in a time when it wasn't OK and my grandpa hated him for what he was. i guess its how you take the comment and I'm sorry your offend. but just so you know it didn't make me think any different about you or any other gay person out there. if it changed peoples mind about you there loss. there ignorant for thinking different about you. a song doesn't define you. you do! Share the love.
I completly agree, and I am proud of who I am, its just the fact that the artist had to sink so low to get a message across

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: hipnitchka

I am embarrased to be alive when baggy pants is even an issue. I have 4 brothers all of which shop at Hollister Co. and listen to rock/metal/pop/alternative music  AND THEY STILL SAG THEIR PANTS!!! Who cares, yes it is a fashion. If fines are going to be given for baggy pants then they better start to regulate all the women that where clothes that are too tight!! It is wrong to blame this on the Hip Hop culture. This all being said from a white female!
so....you are saying you LIKE seeing their butt cracks??   what???

who cares if we see a guys boxers!

Quote From: beefar

Dr. Phil does not get much accomplished on his show. Of course, he did his best not to offend anyone supporting saggy pants. How about asking what people want to know? How do people who wear saggy pants function in the real world? How do they play sports without injuring themselves? How do they look for jobs? How do they run? Isn't it annoying having to pull up or adjust your pants every couple of minutes?
Funny, that a woman can have her breasts hanging out or show their thong, or be half naked and its fine. But if a guy shows his boxers  its a problem. I have never seen bare flesh on a guy. They usually wear their shirts so baggy you cant even see their pants anyway. If you can all you see is their boxers!!!!! Who cares!!!!! If they pass a law against the guys you better go and make sure a woman does not show her breasts! and you know that will never happen!!!

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: itzsecret

Okay.  Why are we as a concerned society considering making a new law banning  baggy pants?

Because I do not believe we need it.  Because do we not in all cities and municipalities have laws governing lewd dressing and/or behavior?

In other words, people who wear baggy pants are already subject to being cited and fined for wearing lewd clothing.  All that we need to do is encourage law enforcement, school officials, etc. to cite the people wearing baggy pants.

I think this is preferable to the government telling me and everybody else exactly what clothiing we can wear.  And in case you are wondering, I think baggy pants are disgusting.  So fine them, fine the wearers, give them community service, whatever it takes.

Besides think about it, it's a form of saying, "I'm gonna do what I want to do,  being different," etc.  So if you ban baggy pants, I don't even want to think what the baggy pants wearers will think of next.

Who's talking about a 'law'??

One sentence stuck out to me...

Quote From: jzsmom

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! not one thing anyone said in favor of the ban sounds intelligent! have you ever stopped to think maybe people don't like the way you dress and they wish they could ban you?! i am 31 years old, female, married, with 2 children, and never once has a person wearing baggy pants ruined a single shopping experience, kept me from going out in public, or made me worry about what my kids will say if they see someone's underwear!!! you are judging a book by it's cover and that is shallow. now, let's talk about some other types of clothing i would like to have banned (please let me know if anyone agrees so that we can start a petition and maybe we can eventually pass a law so that the whole united states must wear a uniform): banana hammock (a.k.a. the speedo). now that makes me uncomfortable and nauseous - no matter the body type (or color)! thong bikinis - they show the whole ass and that is something i DO NOT appreciate my children seeing! oh, how 'bout poufy sleeved shirts - i have yet to see ANYONE who looks good in those! and half shirts that show belly buttons, and short skirts/shorts that show butt cheeks, and push-up bras - my kids really don't notice clevevage yet (they are both boys), but my husband notices and i'm sure we would have a better relationship if other women weren't parading their boobs in public! i can go on and on. does anyone agree that the idea of banning these types of clothing sounds ABSURD?! well so do people complaining about baggy pants (and the 36 yr old white male who doesn't shop as much as he 'should' because baggy pants make him sad -poor guy!)!!! why are our elected officials waisting our money, their time, and public resources to make a law about how we can dress? what about health care? what about homeless people? what about the war? what about our economy? i can go on and on. and how would those people who support the ban on baggy pants feel if we were trying to ban you from wearing your big boy panties, your 'showing way tooooo much in the front' tight pants, or the sexy clothes that ALL heterosexual males find attractive on a tall, beautiful woman (or would you propose a ban on sexy clothes for.... let's say.... short chunky women?) THIS IS AMERICA PEOPLE!! those of you who want a ban on ANY type of clothing make me sick - maybe you can move to a country where they don't allow so much freedom - i'm sure you and your families will be happy being told what to do - like you're trying to tell us!!

"and push-up bras - my kids really don't notice clevevage yet (they are both boys), but my husband notices and i'm sure we would have a better relationship if other women weren't parading their boobs in public"

That's a terrible shame if that is hindering a good relationship between you and your husband.
