Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: palomapdx

I don't think government should impose such silly laws.  That is not what government is for.  Basically, saggy pants look stupid - plain and simple.  I laugh when I see people wearing them.  I think the style is primarily worn by young people under 25 or so, trying to look "hip hop".  Unfortunately, I think the look did start out with gangbangers, so the look makes one pause and think "gangbanger".

Profiling?  No.  Judging, Yes.  And why not?  Isn't it up to society to say what we will tolerate and what we won't? Everyone judges things/situations/people every day...it's human nature and it's how we make our decisions on values, boundaries, clothing, food, books, music, etc.

I don't think it's a race thing as it's worn by all races. (personally I get very upset by people like Rev Sharpton always pulling that card - why does anyone even bother to ask him anything, we all know he'll put a racial spin on it.  It's people like him that further divide our country and keep us at war with ourselves.)  And quite honestly, I think we should ignore the whole baggy pants thing.  It's a fashion statement, albeit an ugly one, and it too shall pass.  The people who wear the look should just be thicker skinned and deal with it.  Or, if they don't like the response they get from their appearance, change the appearance.  Majority has always ruled, isn't that what a democratic society is?  If the majority doesn't agree with something, chances are there's a good reason.  If one is not getting the desired response from something, shouldn't they try another avenue?  Reminds me of the emporer's new clothes....

15 years and counting....do you think it's PASSING?

Another thing.................

...............about this so-called test with the kids going into the mall with their underwear showing. I think it speaks volumes moreso for the people they encountered. Apparently, those people have better manners NOT to say anything or start an argument about what the subjects were wearing (or almost wearing). If the salespeople had said anything to them, they would have been "out of line" speaking out to a potential patron or would have seemed rude to have done so. That made the whole experiement moot. BUT, I wonder what they were really THINKING! Again, just MHO.

Baggy pants are a problem

Baggy pants are a problem.  I don't think that the government should be involved.  The people that should be involved are the parents and the people who make this glamorus.  The entertainers who wear baggy pants and in turn are telling the kids, if I wear it, it's has to be cool.  Well, it's not!  I work in a Junior High School.  I am tired of seeing undergarments or butts when the kids bend over to get a drink, sit in there seats, or pick something up from the floor.  Watching them try to run down the hall when they are late to class is not pleasant.  They have to hang on to their pants when they run, go down stairs or up, if they let go, the pants would go down for sure.  It has become a very large problem in school.  Most of us feel that if you dress nice,  you feel good about your self and take pride in what you accomplish.  Most of the sagging students are black.  Not a single student that I know who sags has a good attitude nor do they want to learn anything in class.  I feel there is a connection there.  These students are the future of our country.

What about if i want to wear

Quote From: thatrabbit

Since when did it become right or fair for anyone to tell you what you can wear, unless it's a parent and a young child. There are so many more important issues that people should be trying to resolve. If the males are not going to be allowed to wear baggy jeans are they going to stop women from wearing short shorts or skirts, low cut tops, or pants that are too tight ? We all know some women who should not be dressing this way do, at least the males are covered up and don't have any body parts hanging all out. A female can just as easily hide a weapon in her shirt as a male can in baggy pants. I think if you see something you don't like look the other way instead of continuing to look. I know this show hasn't aired yet but I saw the previews.

If I wanted to wear a kkk outfit or a nazi uniform you would probably think differently. I understand these are beyond the limits of baggy pants. The excuse for wearing baggie pants is all self serving and does not take into concideration what others think. This country is losing its class. Some of you feel you should not be "judged by your appearance. WRONG. I judge all day who I associate with, and lots of other judgement calls. Many of you dont believe you stareo type. YOU DO. When the Oklahoma city bomb exploded that building alot of you first concluded arab extreamists. Many of you didn't. Lets be honest. Did you think a man did this? of course yo did. I don't like making laws against this. And at the same time I don't have to look at this. Then again as an employer I don't have to hire you either. "For every action there is a reaction"

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

it's just like freedom of speech, freedom of expression. I feel you can over do it with having them too low but if it's a little bit then it should be fine. Plus you have to look at the way all people dress, look at the way females dress these days. BARELY covered. It gets on my nerves but it's her right. You can't single out one thing without picking them all apart too. I just think there is a time and a place for it.

It starts at home

All you need to do is look at  the home the kids are from that wear the baggy pants. Baggy pants came from drug people on drugs and lost weight because they only did drugs. The kids now use this form of dress as rebelion just as kids rebell with drinking, smoking sex skipping school and the list goes on. This is going on with white kids as well as black and all other kids that just want to rebell. The controll or lack of controll is at the home and the parents. Do you know what and where your kids are?

find something significant to be concerned about

There is many things happening in public places that I don't want my son to emulate.  This happens to be one of them, but I certainly wouldn't support a law that prohibits anyone from wearing their pants in what ever way they choose.  I'm happy that most everyone wears pants in public.  Please stop this petty nonsense about bans against baggy pants.  Let us have something to laugh about.  It's a phase like mini skirts, platform shoes, spike heels, tattoos, and piercings.  It will fade and it isn't harmful except to those that let their blood boil over it.

BAGGY PANTS ??

ok basically I would NEVER allow my sons to wear baggy pants just like I wouldn't allow my girls to show their bodies off inapropriately although wearing your pants low is not as bad as the way girls dress now days in my opinion I think it is great that they have a campaign and are trying to get guys to pull their pants up and everything that is fine if they have bill boards and everything they have the right to do what they want like we do BUT I do NOt think they should make it a law that guys do it guys have the right to look at those bill boards or hear that rap song and choose for themselves whether they want to change or not I think it is VERY UGLY to show off your boxers like that but if you are going to do it at least wear a long shirt so everyone else can't see that is better then guys who wear their pants that way and wear rergular shirts but I do think it looks like the ghetto and stuff BUT  basically I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THE REV. AL SHARPTON!

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: puddin370

I have a brother that sags his pants.  I think it's ridiculous and uncomfortable to wear your pants that low.  It's stupid to emulate and glorify jailhouse fashion.  I don't understand why anyone would want to spend the day yanking their pants up.  I also find it annoying to see people wearing pants that are too long that drag the ground.  Their pants are always torn and dirty.  I've noticed alot of employees at fast food resturants and other places wearing saggin pants, which is completely unprofessional.  I can't remember the last time I've seen a fast food employee in a uniform that fit.

With that being said I don't think legislation is thhe right way to go.  If that's the case way not legislate women's wear that is deemed too revealing.  We could legislate ourselves into dressing like the puritans or muslims.

As for the kids, there is absolutely no reason a child should be subjected to saggin.  Kids run around and play and saggin would only hinder their movement.  I buy my son's clothes to fit his body.  You can't always blame Hip Hop and TV for guiding your children in the wrong direction.  My son is 8 and I DO NOT allow him to watch music videos and other inappropriate TV shows.  I do understand that he will become a teenager and I will allow him leeway to make his own decisions about certain things.  But ultimately he will still be a minor child under my roof, thus it's still my responsibility to see him into adulthood.

There's only ONE good thing about 'sagging'......I watch 'Cops' alot....and EVERY jerk that is 'sagging' is ALWAYS caught....with his PANTS down around his ankles!!   HAHAHA  I think it is 'POETIC JUSTICE'!   hahaha
