Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

I care about your future!!!

Why did not 1 man step up and say that they cared about that kids future?!?

No wonder there is such apathy ~ there is No team play, it seems it's every man for himself ~  our society is so sad to me.

Because ~ I DO care !!!  ALOT!!!  Their future is my future!! We are on a rock  floating in space  together forever ~  It is all ~OUR FUTURE!!!

We must teach respect and care and compassion and kindness for everyone on our planet.

"They're comfortable"

Quote From: housewife52

I do not think the government should decide whether or not baggy pants should be worn. I have never understood why in the world boys would want to wear thier pants that way. They generally are holding them up while navigating through the day. My son always favored a western cut of jeans. ALL of his friends black and white favor the baggy pants. At our local high school, there is a dress code, prohibiting baggy pants among other things. But it has never been enforced. Most of the boys seem to like the baggy pants.(black and white) As far as I know, there has not been a problem with anyone hiding weapons in thier pants.

I just think we need to be careful about what we accept that our government is going to dictate.

A few years ago while using the local public transit as I often do, there was a young man who was very pleasant and we began to talk while waiting for our stop. He was wearing the baggy pants, and so as I had often wondered why so many young men wear them, I asked him, "Why?". His response, which seemed to be an honest answer was a good one. His answer was, "Because they're comfortable".

Looking back, I remember my brother and some of his buddies wearing similar during the summer. Cut offs mostly. I think it must have been comfortable. And male bonding maybe. Not such a bad thing, mostly!

P.S. My brother is a white man!!

Love

Get over it!

Oh my goodness this is so DAMN ridiculous! Are these people serious.......get over it! Why are these people so worried on what other people wear! Since when is it a CRIME to sag your pants. People are looking too much into this topic they juss need to find something else to worry about, there are more important problems going on in the US and saggin your pants isnt one of them. Im sooo frustrated that these people are blaming Hip Hop for all this. Thats flat out IGNORANT. Its not Hip Hop's fault that kids, teens and so on (who may i add have there OWN BRAIN to make their OWN choices) choose to wear their pants baggy. Quit trying to blame other people to make your story plausible.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: thestarkfamily

I understand and i love gays. my uncle was gay and died of aids when i was 6 years old. i never really knew him but i hear he was a good man.  but one thing i learned from his sister ( my mother) it doesn't matter what anyone says if your gay and proud (that my uncle was) it doesn't matter. My uncle grew up in a time when it wasn't OK and my grandpa hated him for what he was. i guess its how you take the comment and I'm sorry your offend. but just so you know it didn't make me think any different about you or any other gay person out there. if it changed peoples mind about you there loss. there ignorant for thinking different about you. a song doesn't define you. you do! Share the love.

The fact that you say "I love GAY people" instead of just saying  "I respect all human beings"  separates "gay" from everyone else.  All people should be proud of who they are if they are of integrity, respectful and honest.  What one does in the privacy of their home should be left there...period.  There is far too much division and hate in this country because people choose to catagorize and sub-catagorize (on both sides).  We are all human beings and, in this country, we are all American.  Use courtesy, common sense and manners when dealing with others, it goes a long way.  People forget their manners far too much anymore.

I can tell you are quite young, I'm sure you meant well, and I applaud you for speaking your mind.  I'm sure your mom loved her brother and is keeping his memory alive by passing down wonderful stories to you.  It's not the fact that he was gay that made him a wonderful person. It's the fact that HE was a wonderful person.  Most of my friends who happen to be gay would much rather be thought of as a person first, not a label.  I'm sure your uncle would have agreed.

Here in LA, the baggy thing is nearly over. We don't see so many saggy pants around, as many schools have pretty strict dress codes. Also, haven't you seen the videos of teh "crooks" on youtube and such? If the pants are too saggy, the crooks can't run

is this a joke?!!

I cannot believe in this day and age that this would even be an issue!! Whatever happened to freedom of expression!!? In all honesty, who cares what people wear. If baggy pants are going to be an issue at all, then maybe the government should start looking at what everyone is wearing. How about cowboy boots and tight jeans.....totally hideous.......and women who wear clothes three sizes too small and their muffin top is hanging over their jeans that don't fit!!!? If that's how some people want to present themselves to the world.....let them.....live and let live. There are sooooo many more serious issues in this world to be worried about ......this is definetly NOT one of them. If you don't like it, then don't look!!! Get over it!!!

I agree, pull them up!!!

I have been in the restaurant business all my life,   the last thing I want to see as a restauranteer or a restaurant patron is an employee that can't keep his pants up.  It is unsanitary, disgusting and rediculous.  I have yet to see a recognized upscale designer integrating this into their new fall lineup.  I personnally do not want to see any man's underwear.

Baggy pants

I think that you should not have your pants that low and I am tired of everything being turned in to a racist issue.  I have seen white people wear their pants low also and I think it is really disrespectful and nasty.  I was at a restraunt eating and the bus boy had his pants low and to me that was really disgusting.  I don't want to see someones underwear especially when I am eating.  I don't care who you are and what color you are, I just think that we should not be able to see anyones undergarment.

Yes, it's a fad. I hope it ends soon. Here in LA, it's nearly gone, at least in areas of town I go to. Turns out criminals have a hard time running away if their pants keep falling down!

Quote From: drphilsviewer

I'm 54 years old and not a wearer of baggy pants, lol, but honestly, are we really going to let the government tell people / kids how to dress. OMG and then they'll be telling us we can't go swimming in mixed groups, or how long our hair can be or how short we can wear our skirts or if we can wear t-shirts with writing on them.  It's a FAD/TREND for goodness sakes, an expression if you will.  For decades the "older generation" never liked the dress codes of the "younger generation" they had adopted to wear.  It eventually changed.

Yes, some do stereotype it to a race, those people probably aren't very open minded about many issues.  But generally I think it has nothing to do with race.  So what if it looks silly or stupid....THIS IS A FREE COUNTRY.  If you let your government make laws like those cities in those 12 states made, they'll be able to take other rights away, and it may be a right that you participate in.

Personally, I haven't gotten that close to someone to check out whether their undies were dirty or not.  I've seen more people with just dirty clothes on more than most of these young men that have their boxers showing. I agree with the dad that said "as they grow up, their pants will go up".  You can't get a decent job with saggin pants.

There are always going to be people on this earth that you can never please and will always be offended by this or that.  But for goodness sakes, DONT LET THE GOVERNMENT legislate such rediculous laws and waste our time and money.
