Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: hopefulgrandma

Could the baggy pants simple be a symptom of other issues our young people are facing?  Perhaps it has more to do with young people finding their own way, learning how to make decisions, learning consequences of decisions, or needing some positive attention.  If the issue is deeper than simply the comfort of wearing baggy pants, lets deal with the issue.  I'd rather turn my head when I see baggy pants,  than have them regulated which will simply force young people to find another way to express the needs we grown-ups aren't meeting.    That being said, I wish my brother in law who is over 45 years old would pull up his pants.  As a grandma, I get the urge to change a diaper when I see "droopy drawers".

AMEN GRANDMA!!  it is the "issue".....not the saggy pats! Let's get to dealin' wih it....

MOM's baggy pants

My son was having some friends coming over so while I was working in the kitchen, I pulled my sweat pants down to show off my "Hanes Her Way Tightie Whities".  My son comes strolling in the kitchen and asked me what I was doing.  I told him that if it was good enough for him, it was good enough for me.  He was less than thrilled.  He met his friends outside instead of in.  Just tring to make a point.

I don't like the look and I especially didn't like it on my son. He is 22 yo old now and he still wears them a bit low but covers his butt (literally) with his shirt.  I think it is just a phase and we all had them in our teenage years no matter how old you are, you can remember something that made your parents crazy.

I agree with Dr Phil...if it is not a permanent body change, this too will pass.

I think the government needs to focus their efforts on important issues, not kids trying to find themselves.  I remember a time when we were against government interferring with our personal lives...what happened?

Now it seems like we can't go to the bathroom without the government trying to tell us how to do it.  Let them stick to serious issues and stay out of how we dress.  I guess the next thing that will happen is that we won't be able to show any cleavage or wear tight pants!

Sagging Pants:HEALTH CONCERNS

No one has addressed the issue of possible health issues which might stem from sagging pants. I have watched guys walking with pants so low that they are trying very hard to keep them up by walking unnaturally. This puts extreme stress and tension on the lower back, the legs,  knees, and  abdomen.  As we all know, all our bones are connected to one another, so who know what other health hazards might crop up.
Take it from a Mom: it's not worth suffering possible chronic back or leg pain just to look cool.

Thus says the lord

Does not nature and history teach us some things?

Lord God lead me

Psalms 119:133

Order my steps in thy word: and let not 'any iniquity have dominion over me.

Yea shall no the truth and the truth shall set you free.

The wearing of baggy pants did not originate from the prison system nor from the hip-hop culture. However the hip-hop culture promotes the wearing of them so the children continue to feed into its fashsion and promote a negative agenda. "A fan is a true follower" The origin of the wearing of baggy sagging pants begin during salvery! At night and bed time the salve owners would take the ropes from the salves in an effort to make it harder for the salves to runaway. See when your pants are baggy & sagging you can't  use your arms and legs for running to get longer strides and get away therefore making it easier for you to get caught and returnded back to the plantation for punishment (the rules of running still apply). I have a message for the hip-hoppers. Isaiah 14:11,Daniel 11:37,Ezekiel 28:12-19 Lucifer, the anointed 'cherub, that old serpent better know as satan is still a musician and he has caused all to whorship the coming of the anitchrist. You can hear him more prevelant in opera, more constant in country, more seductive in rock and roll, more elussive in R & B,more direct in hip-hop and more deceptive in gospel. Just look at what's popping up in our churches and the choirs Lucifering has taken his place back at the head of the church and the choir cause his selfish and wants his place back. "Don't be no fools!" Now the children don't even care about themselves. God forbid! Those that have ears let them hear, those that have eyes let them see.

Lord God lead me

Psalms 119:133

Order my steps in thy word: and let not 'any iniquity have dominion over me.

Wake up people It's time to get back to our roots God's on his way back and he is near.

(GOOD MORNING GOD!)

You are ushering in another day untouched and freshly new,so here I come to ask You, God, if you'll renew me,too, forgive the many errors that I made yesterday and let me try again, dear God, to walk closer in thy way...But,Father, I am well aware I can't make it on my own so take my hand and hold it tight for I can't walk alone!

Those that have eyes let them see. Those that have ears let them hear.

Wisdom And Truth Walk's Hand In Hand Intelligence Is A Gift So Therefore A Person Is Only Born With It And An intelligent Person Will Definitely Know The Difference Between What's Right And What's Wrong! So Just Because A Person Has A College Education Doesn't At All Mean That They Are Intelligent!

Baggy pants

When I see these young men walking around with baggy pants, they seem to be holding their manhood in their hands. Public masterbation  is definitely against the law. Plus that it is nasty. If they only knew that  wearing their pants like that is apparently a sign in jails that they are ready to be raped.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: mom_w_heart

Hey Dr. Phil,

I usually don't do this....not because I have some negative connotation or anything, I guess I have lived so long just mindin' my own business and raising my family by our values. I figured someone else with more "importance, value, connection or $$" would take action.....I  KNOW  it is time we stop using the excuse of "political correctness", or "freedom of choice" or "tolerance" to rule our disconnection with the human race.

On that note.....YOU MISSED THE POINT!

The saggy pant thing is in no way a racial problem....it is a generation problem. It is more of the same issues our younger generation is continuing to display. It is about respect.....mutual respect for yourself and others! We continue to live with an attitude of entitlement, selfishness, and a belief of "I am what matters".

To try to control behavior with laws is silly. Have our current laws deterred those that fill our jail systems? Does a speed limit really stop those who feel "entitled" or justified in their choice to speed?

You often say, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is insanity.....well how are all of these laws working for us?!

I think you also missed the point of the hip hop guy who wrote the song...(sorry, I forgot his name). He didn't set out to offend the gay community...he apologized and went one step further, he changed the lyrics of his songs. He was trying to explain the history of the sagging fashion. No one really believes that "sex" in prisons is about a persons sexual identity...maybe for some, but come on....it is about CONTROL!

Didn't you yourself recently speak in the media about someone or something and then have your "intentions" among other things challenged? You followed by making a statement with an apology and then took action by not speaking on that subject any more. OK, accepted, we are encouraged (by you and evidence of past actions) to believe your truth here and move on. I think he deserves that same mutual respect and support. (That is my point)

You said repeatedly today "we should pick our battles".....shouldn't we really "battle" any attitude that is offensive, or disrespectful to other human beings? Maybe if we "battled" over the "little things" that display attitudes of dishonesty, anger, sarcasm, selfishness, disrespect, disobeying, lack of honor and integrity

at an early age and stage we could change the future of our world. MAYBE...we wouldn't have the really "BIG THINGS" that follow due to tolerance and apathy over all these "little things".

It is likel iving the "Golden Rule"......

I hope it is apparent from my "message" here, We should not being racial, We should not being legalistic, and I am not condoning sagging pants (it is pretty ugly from a fashion point & it is offensive to the majority)

---Hey, the FCC just majorly fined NYPD Blue for showing "butt" on their TV show in 2003.....why then should we tolerate the underwear and very often the "butt" in our communities and nation, I am saying maybe, we really need a National Campaign to hold up a mirror and check our attitudes before and after we speak, act or react !

Choosing to show "good" attitudes is not a sign of weakness...it is a sign of strength! You are demonstrating that you are strong enough to be meek (not nieve or weak)for another's benefit. WOW...how could that impact our world......

I'm commenting on my own message becuz I forget to mention that saggy pants are not the only offensive clothing trend....and males are not the only offenders!  Many other offensive styles have been mentioned hroughout  these messages. More indication that "style" is really not the issue

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: docdawn

I get really tired of how so many issues become reduced to being racial.  Pulling your pants up is as simple as self-respect and good grooming. Sagging pants, in my opinion, has nothing to do with race and has everything to do with a disrespect of yourself and others. DUH! You are showing your ass...  As a probation officer, I do not allow any of my probationers to report to my office with sagging pants as it is disrespectful regardless of their race. It is considered "repoting in a reasonable manner" and I also do not allow them to report in pajamas or slippers. It seems like we need new ridiculous laws because we have lost the ability to police ourselves and we as a society do not have the good sense to pull up our pants! It is similar to the "truck nuts" issue where we no longer have the good sense to know that a pair of testicles hanging from our vehicles is vulgar and disrespectful and sooner or later, there will have to be a law to remind us of common sense in this regard. We can't bitch about ridiculous laws when we no longer show that we have any common sense.

To me this not an issue of race or offensiveness.  It is a simple obscenity issue.  Is it obscene to wear your pants low?  If so where does that 'line' begin?  To me, if the pants are hanging so low that the entire buttocks or genitals are outside of the pants, that is obscene.  Pure and simple.  I have seen homeless people harassed for less offensive behavior and dress.  Give me a break.  I disagree with Dr. Phil on this one.  Picking and choosing your battles should start when body parts are literally outside of our outer clothing and underclothes are completely exposed.  This is a battle to pick.  I have small children who don't need to see this.  Trendy or not.

Baggy Pants

On this issue it’s only a matter of opinion, do I personally like that style? NO, but I am not for a law or fines to come into place and try to tell someone how they can and can not dress. The last I checked I still lived in America, you know the land of the “free”. I feel if states or cities go in make laws agents this, there in the wrong. Look at California, Florida or in the summer every state in the US. People go to the pool the beach they walk around the block sometimes just a bikini, or speedos we don’t fine them. When it comes to the topic of public indecency most of the states that I looked at defined it as showing genitals or a bare butt, there is nothing illegal about showing boxers. There is more important thing to worry about in this world then if someone has there boxers hanging out or not.
