Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Origins of baggy pants

Baggy pants came into fashion because many children or low income families wore hand-me-downs of older siblings so many of the clothes were too big when they were wearing them. Instead of being embarrassed, the culture embraced it which is why it's in the culture today. If you think about it, it's pretty ridiculous that people are so upset about a fashion statement.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Hi.  I am a teacher in an inner city high school in Ohio.  I am NOT a proponent of the "droops," however, I think making them "illegal" is a bit much.  Then, you get into other gray areas such as how much cleavage is too much, or offensive.  The length of a skirt...offensive to some? etc.  It just opens up a whole new can of worms that has nothing to do with the real issue!  The real issue that I witness daily as a teacher  is that along with this so calld "style" or fad, comes many other negative behaviors.  UNFORTUNATELY (because I wish I could say otherwise) I have yet to see a student with "droops" getting good grades & behaving like a responsible student who wants to succeed & graduate from high school!  To the contrary, (again, as I witness daily as a teacher) drooping is also associated with poor grades(mostly F's), frequent suspensions from school, drugs, fighting, poor classroom behavior, disrespectfulness to adults & other peers, innappropriate language, & zero motivation where academics are concerned.  There is something bigger occuring here, we're talking about more than just a fashion statement.  It frustrates & scares me & those I work with daily (police officers, security guards, other teachers, & administrators) that this unmotivated & "behaviorally challenged" generation is the future of our country!  All they do is go from class to class being rude & disrespectful, swearing every other word, no intention on learning anything because they won't shut up long enough to hear anyone but themselves, complain about everything & then blame their teachers when they earn their F5's! I believe the media has the ability to influence this generation positively for a change & make them realize they don't need to dress like thugs to "fit in."  They do want what they see on t.v  & in the videos...the $$, the bling, the clothes etc. except they don't want to  have to work for any of it.  This generation is lazy & their pants around their thighs, (& often times as low as their knees) says a lot more than ..oh, they're just relaxed or comfortable! Give me a break!  I often ask my students if they would take me seriously if I came to work with my pants hanging off of my butt!  They just laugh...some say no! Then I ask, why should I take you seriously then? What it boils down to is that along with these sagging pants comes a generation lagging behind in so many arena's...the scariest of which are a lack of motivation & a lack of respect for authority.  Unfortunatley, part of this "fad" includes a lack of concern for good grades, attaining an education & a general "it's cool to not give a crap" attitude.  THAT is the problem here!  If I had respectful students who came to my classroom ready & willing to listen & learn, I would have no problem with what they chose to wear.  I do believe in freedom of expression.  But, it has been my experience that this is NOT the case.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Personally, I would rather see a boys boxer shorts than a girl thong....or butt crack for that matter!!!

I really don't care for the style, but then again, I don't care for boys with shaggy hair either. However, I won't judge a person with shaggy hair! I don't think it is my right to judge a person by what they look like.

If this were to become a law, where do you draw the line? What about girls who show too much cleavage? I don't see anything good that can come from that. Especially when you see it on a high school student. When you see that and the thong underwear, I can't believe people would even take the time to complain about seeing a boy's boxers!

My attitude is if you don't like the style, then don't wear the style. But that doesn't give you the right to outlaw the style. After all, if I had my way, tapered legged pants would be outlawed!!!!

Baggy Pants-- the medical issue

Personally, I can't stand the baggy pants.  I don't want the government to tell me what to wear, but I don't want to see butts hanging out either.

But what about the medical issue?  Hasn't anybody heard about that?  People who wear baggy pants have a change in their gait - their way of walking- in order to keep the pants up.  This is leading to hip disorders in young people, some of which usually only occur in the elderly.   It is a relatively new phenomenon and the data coming in is very concerning.

What good is a fashion statement that is going to leave you a cripple?

For me, please pull the darned things up.  For your future health, please pull them up.

So, basically you want laws to enforce dress codes to make sure everyone is presentable according to your standards.

Lets say I see an old lady with a huge woolly red and green santa-faced Christmas sweater, or a big, ugly, neon orange floral dress. Should I be able to ban ugly patterns and ill-fitting shoulder pads because I think that they make women look "ridiculous"?

How will police even enforce this? How baggy is too baggy? Will the police measure the amount of bagginess? I've seen guys wear pants about five times too big, (I dont even know how they get them to stay up) and I also know guys who get just a size or two bigger, so they have slightly baggy pants. Will the (hypothetical) law cover only REALLY baggy pants, or will anyone get fined for daring to wear their pants a size or two big? What if I'm feeling sick and I want comfortable, baggy pants and they're too baggy? What if some people just don't like tight pants?

I just wonder how people define these baggy pants. My boyfriend wears pants a size bigger just because he doesnt want them too tight on his waist. Theyre not really, really baggy, theyre only slightly baggy. The word baggy sounds weird after a while when I think about it a lot.

Yes, people need to choose their own clothes.

You ask...'how baggy is TOO baggy'??  When I HAVE to SEE the CRACK OF YOUR AZZZZZZ!!!!!

It should not matter how people dress! If people like wearing there pants below their waist then let them. IT'S NO BIG DEAL! Every place I go I always see people with their pants below their waist, It does not bother me one bit because if thats how they like it then who cares. The gov. should not have the right to tell people how to dress. Growing up I was told dress however I feel comfertible. During the summer there is always girls walking around in nothing but a bathing suite and that shows alot more then just having your boxers show a lil bit. Personally I think that the gov. should not have a say on the way people dress! IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT DON'T LOOK!

one more thing.

If it's done tastefully, let it be.

If their BARE bottoms are not showing, let it be.

If it's not ridiculously low, let it be.

They are WEARING BOXERS, for crying out loud.

Not like they're walking around with their boxers hanging down low, too!

What one person thinks is offensive, another may not.

While they were sitting there, saying how "offensive" it was to see guys with their pants low,

I was sitting there saying, "I'm not offended."

So, yeah, I know I may be getting a tad carried away in this,
I'm just a very opinionated person.

If you care to comment on my thoughts, feel free.

Welll DEAR....a PERVERT wouldn't think BOOBS are 'offensive'....But 'I DO'!!

THIS IS VERY RIDICULOUS

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE WOULD SIT DOWN, AND COME UP WITH SOMETHING LIKE THIS. THIS STUPID BAN WOULDN'T CAUGHT IF PEOPLE WOULDN'T HAVE GOT ALL BENT OUT OF SHAPE ABOUT IT. I DON'T WANT MY TAX DOLLARS TO GO TOWARDS A CLOTHING ORDINANCE, WHEN IT CAN TOWARDS, BETTER SCHOOLS, MORE HOSPITALS, AND THE HEALTH CARE CRISIS.  THERE ARE MANY MORE THINGS I CAN NAME, BUT THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. POEPLE ARE CORRECT WHEN THEY STATE  IT STARTS IN THE HOME, BUT WHEN THEY LEAVE HOME THEY ARE GOING TO SAG THEIR PANTS. PARENTS CAN NOT ALWAYS CONTROL THERE KIDS, THEY ARE GOING TO DO WHAT THEY WANT TO DO WHEN THEY LEAVE THERE SIGHTS. I AM A 23 YR OLD COLLEGE STUDENT, I WATCH THE NEWS EVERDAY. THERE ARE OTHER THINGS PEOPLE SHOULD WORRY ABOUT WITH KIDS. ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE IT HOME FROM SCHOOL? ARE THEY OUT THIER ROBBING STORES? OR ARE THEY OUT THEIR SELLING DRUGS. PEOPLE  THERE ARE MORE CONCERNING THINGS,THEN SAGGING PANTS. I GUARANTEE THAT A POLICE WILL NOT KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR TELLING YOU YOUR CHILD IS DEAD FROM BAGGY, SAGGY PANTS. PEOPLE OPEN UP YOUR EYES THIS ISNT A RECENT ISSUE BAGGY PANTS HAS BE GOING ON FOR MANY YEARS AND YES BEFORE THE YEAR 2000. SO DEAL WITH IT!

LEAVE THESE KIDS ALONE

This is just a fad.  Every generation has had fads of one kind of another.  So, what if they have baggy pants.  They arent hurting anyone.  This should be the least of peoples concerns.  Why doesnt the government and others worry about the war, the pedifiles and other things more serious.

If this is all these kids and some adults are doing, good for them.

If some states are going to ban these clothes, then how about banding how some women dress, with low to the belly button with cleavage and their thongs showing.

My God, people let it rest.  The more attention you give this the more it gets blown out of porportion.
