Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: dansfae

Just think how much a young man could accomplish in life if he could use two hands instead of using one to hold up his pants.  Underwear are underwear--they belong out of sight.

I wholeheartedly agree!  What a great point!!!

I suppose the next disability we taxpayers will end up shelling out for will be akin to carpal tunnel - we'll call it Saggin Pants Syndrome or something!  LOL

Thanks for sharing the humor!

Pandoras box is open.

Quote From: hpmx59

The Baggy Pants Debate Doctor Phil Doctor Phil I am staying out of this debate because if I do debate----

then I will get into trouble. See you on Monday Janurary 28th, 2008.  Sincerley Your. Russell Vlaanderen.---

As sure as I am about knowing who holds my tomorrow, (God), I knew that Pandoras box had been opened when they began to create laws against those who smoke.  I don't  smoke now,  but have in the past, still, their rights, just like those of Christians in schools and various PUBLIC places, have been quelled IN order that others may NOT be offended. So some are happy because laws have been altered to appease those with different views, but, it comes at the cost of anothers freedom and rights. That my friends, is not a solution, it is a diterent, a (bandaid), if you will, on a gaping wound.

Firstly everyone knows this occurance is timeless, and not new. I have 2 sons in their late 20's, and from time to time, I have noticed their attire a lil' looser than when I was a kid, and yet, somehow, they managed to grow into mature young men, each with 2 kids, and each hard working, kind, caring young men who are valuable and viable to their families and to society, thank God. I believe that the look CAN conjure up myths and misconceptions in OUR minds about their character, however, if we formulate opinions about anyone before we know them,  then we are being judgemental. I suppose thugs CAN  dress this way, but that may be only because it is the hip way to dress, they may want to be trendy ??

I do know this issue was around waaaay before now, if you don't believe me, ask any cholo.  That  word, cholo, is a tex-mex slang for a rebel,  who in some instances were also thuggish back in the day. They would wear the white ribbed tanks, they go by another name I choose not to perpetuate, and they would wear BAGGY khaki pants, no belts, bandanas, slicked hair back, sometimes use hairnets and dark glasses, sound familiar?? That was back in the 50's, 60's and 70's There is truly nothing new under the sun..

The point is this, like it or not, we can NOT start to police anyone for what they wear, for then it will not end. Then, mark my words, next will be the food police ordering us what, where and how to eat, we are pretty close on that one already. I believe if we try to remember we are not alone in this world, and that everything we say and do, DOES affect the world around us, perhaps we can be less self serving and more self giving, as in respect.  Thank you.....

debate

I'm a 32 year old white women .I would like to say that the government needs  to worry about the schools ,hungrier and the crime. Not what people are wearing that is the freedom we have in America .The government should not have a say in music ,what we wear, or how we look. The government is there to help run our county not run us .Start worrying about the people who cant afford pants or the people who can't fit in the pant because they cant afford food.Stop worrying about how we look and start worrying about the real issues we are facing in the world today. And that goes for the mothers out there . That are so worried about everyone else, worry about what your children are doing ..Thank you.

What does under mean?

Look this is the way I see the issue.  Boxers, g-string, bras, or just the straps hanging out.  These are all called underware or undergarment.  So If they are suppose to be under something, I should not have to see them.  There's your law.

Yea shall no the truth and the truth shall set you free.

The wearing of baggy pants did not originate from the prison system nor from the hip-hop culture. However the hip-hop culture promotes the wearing of them so the children continue to feed into its fashsion and promote a negative agenda. "A fan is a true follower" The origin of the wearing of baggy sagging pants begin during salvery! At night and bed time the salve owners would take the ropes from the salves in an effort to make it harder for the salves to runaway. See when your pants are baggy & sagging you can't  use your arms and legs for running to get longer strides and get away therefore making it easier for you to get caught and returned back to the plantation for punishment (the rules of running still apply). I have a message for the hip-hoppers for you adheres to the cherubs' negative agenda. Isaiah 14:11,Daniel 11:37,Ezekiel 28:12-19 Lucifer, the anointed 'cherub, that old serpent better know as satan is still a musician and he has caused all to whorship the coming of the anitchrist. You can hear him more prevelant in opera, more constant in country, more seductive in rock and roll, more elussive in R & B,more direct in hip-hop and more deceptive in gospel. Just look at what's popping up in our churches and the choirs Lucifering has taken his place back at the head of the church and the choir cause his selfish and wants his place back. "Don't be no fools!" Least ye should parish. Just look at them now the children don't even care about themselves or have any respect for others. God forbid! Those that have ears let them hear, those that have eyes let them see.

You are ushering in another day untouched and freshly new,so here I come to ask You, God, if you'll renew me,too, forgive the many errors that I made yesterday and let me try again, dear God, to walk closer in thy way...But,Father, I am well aware I can't make it on my own so take my hand and hold it tight for I can't walk alone!

About saggin and baggy pants

I feel it is a maturity thing. We have two young adult men we raised and at one time in there young life we bought them pants to grow into and they may have hung down low on the hips. We are white folks and as they grew we noticed they thought it was cool to wear there pants this way but now that they are out in the world they don't choose to wear there pants this way.

Why dosen't someone make pants with the waist at the waist ( elastic ) but the croch is at the knees? If it is for comfort.

the goverment should not be involved then have more important things they should work. Like schools and medical.

Baggy pants

I was shocked at the things i heard on this show. I watched it with my 14 year old son, who wears baggy pants. What didn't shock me is that it was turned into a racial thing. I live in a mostly white community and baggy pants are everywhere. Every generation has had there own style. Who are we to judge. This is the true root of the problem , people judging !!!!! I hate my son's pants style. But, I also know that he isn't the clothes that he wears. He is a very polite young man. And does his best to be a good kid. Baggy pants don't make the kid, it's what is in the heart. Try asking the kids that dress this way what they think!!!!

It looks so silly

EVERY TIME I see someone wearing pants that way, I  just want to walk up from behind and snatch them down to their ankles!!  But then, I would risk breaking a law of some sort, I'm sure.

No, I do not want government to legislate on this.  It's just one of the worst trends in dressing I've seen in my 51 years.  I will be glad when it goes away.

It DOES make a negative impression. It is not a matter of being right or wrong, but it is human nature to pass judgment. We discern or judge many aspects of every day, and this is a good and necessary thing. As for hiring or expecting to be hired looking this way, however, the employer has every right to hire or not hire based on the impression he/she gets...and impressions are critical to this process.

Who cares?

Baggy pants are not a "racial" issue.  They are just a horrible fashion faux pas, LOL.

Saggy and Stupid...

I was not aware of the 'hiphop' thing but British male youth have been wearing saggy pants for a few years now. Most teens rebel with some kind of style - heck in my day it was a green mowhawk and safety pins through your nose, but at least that showed originality. I don't find saggy pants offensive, but I do wonder if the wearer is too stupid or lazy to pull them up. It's not attractive or stylish, just looks plain daft and unkempt.
