Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Cultural regimentation doesn't work

Some people think that banning certain fashion styles (baggy pants, hair dye, facial piercings) are a way to promote "respect for authority."  If your goal is to promote DISrespect for authority, one of the best ways to do that is to regiment fashion, music, art, or anything else to do with culture.  Parents tried this in the late 1950s/early 60s with rock 'n roll and skirt lengths, and it didn't take too many years for their plans to backfire.

Secondly, a lot (not all) of the people against baggy pants want today's youth to be forced back into a conservative, traditionalist system of culture and values.  This is the same kind of narrow mindedness that tried to ban Elvis in the 1950s, and ban the "Twist" in the early '60s.  There are plenty of folks out there who want to legislate our way back to 1950s-style conformity.  But guess what?  Most people under the age of 40 aren't buying their agenda.  And they never will.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: madam_cod

I was not aware of the 'hiphop' thing but British male youth have been wearing saggy pants for a few years now. Most teens rebel with some kind of style - heck in my day it was a green mowhawk and safety pins through your nose, but at least that showed originality. I don't find saggy pants offensive, but I do wonder if the wearer is too stupid or lazy to pull them up. It's not attractive or stylish, just looks plain daft and unkempt.

I agree!

LOL

The thing is...I think many of the kids who sag...I'm not talking about the hip hop culture or ghetto kids...I'm talking run of the mill suburban types....do so because it's the complete opposite of their parents.

I recall my son calling well tailored pants, "butt huggers"...

Just like my daughter would NEVER be caught dead with a big sweater, leggings, slouch socks...it's the antithesis of what she would do...so young men wear their pants low and loose.

:o)

My son never wore his pants extremely low and loose...but he is of the generation that though butt hugging pants were dorky.

American rights

This was an enlightening show as I watched with my 17 yr old daughter.

Neither one of us likes the baggie pant look- to each their own.

Why we feel the need to take away or legeslate people's rights is beyond me.

From smoking in your own home- to this:(

My daughter and I both agreed that speedo's on men or some womens non existant bikini's are far more embaressing, and disrespectful to not only us but, 85 yr old women or 5 yr old children.

I would much rather see boxer shorts- then explaining aroused or not genitilia in a bathing suit.

Either way- it isn't a racial thing- most of us have a preconcieved notion of the guy in the speedo- the youngin in baggies- the over the top colorfull dresser in a hat- the person with the unnaturally tight face- on and on.... America gives you the right of choices- as long as it does not take away the rights of others.

This crosses the line of legeslating- as with banning specific dog breeds- or smoking in your own home.

Personal responsibility and consequences of choice is becoming a thing of the past.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: sharsherma

I have a 14 year old son who wears baggy pants every day. We are so happy this is the style.

My son almost died 4 years ago, he had a large section of his colon removed and now has a stoma and a bag. With the baggy style my son can wear jeans, the regular style of jeans leave no room for his bag, there is a large lump under the pants that is very noticeable. We love the baggy pants and shirts. My 14 year old who has been to hell and back can now where something that is comfortable for him.

We live in a very small town out in the country, there are the kids who wear baggy pants and then there are the kids that wear the pants that are so tight that I am in awe that they can even move in them.

Why are people so interested in what others wear?  Put that interest into your community or your own children, then baggy pants wouldn't be an issue.

The problem is not with the baggy pants.  The problem is with wearing pants so your behind is showing.  I have no objection to baggy pants.  I do, however, object to thinking its acceptable to exposing your boxer for public display.

Its so sad

I watched the show over the baggy saggy pants debate and I am appauled.  I cannot believe that young men and adults do not find this fashion statement offensive.  When I go to work everyday I do not see one man in our office with his pants hanging off of his behind.  I really cannot believe that an African American father sags his pants.  He is too old for that.  It is time for hime to grow up.  As a father he should lead by example.  That father must not work in the corporate sector.  Where was the mother?  I cannot believe a mother would allow her sons to dress in such manner.  I have a question for the father of the two boys.  Would he allow a boy with his pants hanging off of his behind to date his daughter?  I think not.  I salute the mother that is trying to raise her boys with some pride about themselves.

No Legislation

I think trying to legislate something like the baggy pants is just ridiculous.  I for one always show lots of cleavage and who knows that may be next.  What that mayor should have focused on was Black people traditionally dressed and spoke respectfully around adults.  In my family to this day, we still address older people by Miss or Mr.  I thought that "test" they did was bogus as there were hardly anyone in the mall.  I am not one to make an issue of race unless absolutely necessary, but that father is deluding himself if he thinks that the cops will think of his sons the same as a well dressed Black young man or even a saggy White young man.  His kid was clueless!  If young saggy pants wearing kids don't care about their future, why should we?!!!! Come on dad, THAT is a reflection on YOU!

I think it's sad that this causes you sadness...

Out of all the issues in the world...World hunger, global warming...WAR...THIS makes you sad?

I personally think the look is sloppy...and I agree...there comes a time that it can be limiting if you want a professional job...

But for you to be appauled or saddened over this seems to be a waste of emotion.

Or what about an 85 year old in a speedo...

On my travels...I've seen close to it...

Now THAT should be legislated...LOL

Thanks for the post.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Let's focus on the "good" things our kids are doing and maybe they will do more of that.

I would take baggy pants over spandex anyday!  Has anyone ever tried to outlaw spandex?   Actually that would make a good follow-up show.  A bunch of 40+ year old white men walking around (or worse jogging) in full leg spandex.  Just another thing kids should not have to see.

It really doesn't matter

I don't think the baggy pants look good, I really think it is ugly, but I don't care either. It doesn't really bother me if men or wearing that or not. It does not effect me one bit to go out in public. That is their choice, and it is stupid for people to get affended over that. That should be the least of thier worry in this world.
