Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: thatrabbit

Since when did it become right or fair for anyone to tell you what you can wear, unless it's a parent and a young child. There are so many more important issues that people should be trying to resolve. If the males are not going to be allowed to wear baggy jeans are they going to stop women from wearing short shorts or skirts, low cut tops, or pants that are too tight ? We all know some women who should not be dressing this way do, at least the males are covered up and don't have any body parts hanging all out. A female can just as easily hide a weapon in her shirt as a male can in baggy pants. I think if you see something you don't like look the other way instead of continuing to look. I know this show hasn't aired yet but I saw the previews.

I'm amazed that, without actually having seen the show, you were able to hit the nail so squarely on the head.  I don't feel any government agency should have the right to legislate how people dress.  If some are so offended by the apparel of others, I can only suggest that they not look at what offends their delicate sensibilities and ask themselves why they are allowing themselves to be so offended.  As I was watching the show, I noticed that one of the women on stage was wearing a rather large silver cross on a chain about her neck.  That silver cross could possibly offend a few people.  Perhaps there should be a ban on wearing any religious jewelry in public.  After all, someone, somewhere might be offended by it and we all know that religion has often started wars.  See how ridiculous things can get?  If one kind of attire is deemed offensive and is banned, then any attire which offends anyone can be banned.

The problem is not with the baggy pants.  The problem is with those who have nothing better to do than attempt to dictate to others how they should dress.  There are so many other more important issues with which people might concern themselves.

You Hit the nail on the head

I am very angry that this is even an issue.  Now, let me start by saying that I do think that it looks rediculous, but so did the crop tops and parachute pants in the 80's and I would have to say that I find a girl with low rise jeans and a thong sticking out of the back of them WAY more offensive than a young man wearing boxer shorts and saggy pants.  At least I don't have to look at his butt crack!  It is a fad, like the ripped up jeans were, like the leg warmers were, like spandex (oh God, the spandex!) like the crop tops that were sometimes so short that if you raised your arms, the bottom of your breasts were exposed.  I am just so thankful that these children have clothes on and nothing is really exposed.  You know some of these kids actually have underwear on under the boxer shorts.  It is no different than wearing shorts under your pants.  They aren't revealing anything offensive.  If we would like to address offensive clothing trends, why have we not passed legislation against low rise pants and thongs and belly shirts?  Females, by fashion trends, are constantly wearing clothing that I find WAY more offensive than some shorts and saggy jeans.  They aren't hurting anyone.  They aren't showing their butt cracks or genitalia.  What is the big deal?  Let's spend more time and government effort on fighting drugs and gangs, not pants.  Really, it isn't the pants that kill people (unless they trip over them).  Let's search for meth labs and gun dealers, not fashion victims of the latest trends!
All I can say is RIGHT ON.  The government can't control the things that are already against the law, why add more.

Are you kidding me?

I don't believe it's the government's place to get involved in this baggy pants issue. We have so much more going on in this country to be concerned about rather than baggy pants. I am a 43-year-old mother of a 15-year-old son. His pants sag a little but never half way down or all the way down his butt. I have seen him wear shorts (with an elastic waist) a little lower because he can as they have elastic. I buy his jeans, so I buy a size that fits, not jeans 2 or 3 sizes too big that I believe some parents must buy their children. I personally don't mind the looser-fitted jeans on boys with a little sag. This sag half way or all the way down the butt though just looks stupid. I just don't see the fashion in that at all. Young people are followers, as much as we would like them to be leaders...wherever and however it got started, it was perceived to be "cool," therefore, teens started doing it. I think most will outgrow it. Just my 2 cents.

The Baggy Pants

I feel this should not be a racial issue at all. This is a moral issue. I'm 53 yrs old and oh how this nation has changed since I was a child. The indencent laws have gone out the window. While the christians were sleeping O'Hara was allowed to change our children single handed. No prayers in school, no pledge to the flag and no discipline. Why can't people wake up to what this nation has become and where it's going. We need our leaders to turn this thing around. It's not too late. The goverment needs to step in only if they go back many years ago. This nation began with morals. At the very beginning schools taught from the bible. We didn't have the crimes we do now. Simple because someone gets offended and files a suit and then morals are out the window. I know we have constitusional rights but it gets used to freely. I'm very frustrated with people yellin discrimination.

I'm sorry but showing off your underwear in public should be considered illegal exposer. Women can not go around in a bra, people should not go around showing off their underwear.

baggy pants debate

I don't feel the gov. should be involved in this, because they can't control anything that is of any real importance.

I DON'T think that is a racist topic either, and I feel that Dr. Phil sort of invoked this by having the

(hard for me type this) REV. AL SHARPTON on the show. I am so fed up with the racist card, I can't stand it.

What parents and these kids need to ask is: if you owned a business, would you hire someone dressed like this? I owned an accounting business for 32 years, and NO Way, the same as with a female applying for a position in a mini skirt. What ever happened to class????

baggy pants

This is too funny.  Every generation has their goofy styles.  I would much rather see colorful boxers hanging out of a mans pants than the full or half moon I see every time some fat old man bends over.  I have also seen on several ocassions a full view of a pregnant girls belly in clothes designed to show that thing off with inside out navel and all.  yuk!  Give me the baggy pants any day.  Keep the government in our wallets where they are used to being and out of our closets.

Leave well enough alone.

My son is enlisted in the Army National Guard, and is currently serving in Iraq. He would wear his pants below his waist. It did not make him a unrespectable person.

Hi Mitzy...how are ya?

Question:  So should hanging bra straps be illegal too?  I think it looks sloppy.
