Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Will We EVER Like What Kids Wear?

Isn't the whole purpose of this fashion to drive mom and dad crazy?  That does not change.  I think that this is pay back for the guys whose long hair that drove their parent crazy.  The bikini was pretty risque in it's day too!  As long as my son doesn't pierce his tongue I will be happy with his gangsta look.

DR. PHIL,  I WATCHED YOUR SHOW TODAY WITH INTEREST.....ESPECIALLY WHAT AL SHARPTON HAD TO SAY.....HE ALWAYS MAKES EVERYTHING BLACK & WHITE......GOING BACK TO THE DUKE LACROSSE TEAM IN MY OPINION HE OWES THE LACROSSE TEAM AND THEIR FAMILIES A NATION WIDE APOLOGIZY.SINCE THEY WERE AQUITTED  WE HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM MR. SHARPTON.THAT'S MY OPINION AND IF ANYWAY YOU CAN FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO HIM, I WOULD APPRICATE IT VERY MUCH........THANKS YOU.
As far as Al Sharpton, I agree, He should apologize PUBLICALLY apologize, he and all of those others who were quick to judge merely on color, without first waiting for the true results. Granted there is a history of abuse and neglect of many minorities, thats why we are minorities, but rather than holding that negativity we can all help one another to excel. However, there are many who now cry wolf without there even being a wolf around, so I suggest we all hold our tongues until we know the facts, I just  have always felt they were so quick to accuse those young men, and there was no outroar about how they were drug threw the mud with no cause, as there was for the bball team ladies,  Where is the justice there, if we all want equality, we must equaly defend those who have been wronged. Al, you do owe those young men and the nation an apology, with no strings.    Thanks and God bless us all..........

baggy pants

I don't want the government involved any more in our lives, but, couldn't the schools put this into their dress codes? Also, malls, stores, restaurants, etc. could enforce a dress code to enter their premises. They could post "no shoes, no shirt, no baggy pants, no service".  Just a thought, I know for one I am tired of seeing underwear everywhere I go.

I'd rather have the baggy pants

My son wore baggy pants 20 years ago when he was a teenager.  I thought it was a stupid style and let him know, but it wasn't like he was listening to me about much of anything then.  He figured it out himself eventually.

If I were raising kids now, I would be much less concerned about a son's underwear showing than a daughter's butt-crack hanging out for the world to view.  Do woman have any idea what they look like in those low-rise jeans? That's a view to really make one shudder.

Baggy Pants Debate

I understand that its probably not the classiest way of dressing, and i personally think it looks tacky BUT

when did it start becoming alright for somebodys OPINION about what looks good... to become the law???.. What if people started wearing lamp shades on there head? and the mayor of some city didnt like it and decided to outlaw wearing Lampshades on your head in that city...If you dont like, dont look at it... Its not hurting anyone else, and if they cant find a job because they dont know how to dress, thats their problem, not ours... whats next? Women have to start wearing scarfs over their head to cover their hair because its too provocative to show your hair??  yep.. communism, thats exactly what this seems like.

THE BAGGY PANTS DEBATE

I'm surprised that people feel any government agency should have the right to legislate how people dress.  If some are so offended by the apparel of others, I can only suggest that they not look at what offends their delicate sensibilities and ask themselves why they are allowing themselves to be so offended.  As I was watching the show, I noticed that one of the women on stage was wearing a rather large silver cross on a chain about her neck.  That silver cross could possibly offend a few people.  Perhaps there should be a ban on wearing any religious jewelry in public.  After all, someone, somewhere might be offended by it and we all know that religion has often started wars.  See how ridiculous things can get?  If one kind of attire is deemed offensive and is banned, then any attire which offends anyone can be banned.

The problem is not with the baggy pants.  The problem is with those who have nothing better to do than attempt to dictate to others how they should dress.  There are so many other more important issues with which people might concern themselves.

Baggy Pants

There are so many important  things going on in our world and we're really worried about boys dressing like pre-schoolers?

I just laugh at these kids and go about my business.  Every generation has a look or style that is construed as gangster dress.  You know the old saying, "The more things change, the more they stay the same'.  I know a sure way to make 'em pull their drawers up-- teenage girls need to start talking LOUDLY about how they miss seeing a guys butt--about how those baggy pants turn them off.  lol

Also, I find it curious that girls have worn hip huggers and sometimes pubic huggers, for quite some time, and no gov't action has been proposed.  And what about the 'whale tales' we're exposed to when those girls bend over?  Does society try to crucify them?  Nope.  We make sit-coms showing guys drooling over them.

Talk about double standards.  We need to stop letting the gov't get so involved in our lives.  We're becoming more and more like Russia when it was under communist rule.  Be very afraid.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: thatrabbit

Since when did it become right or fair for anyone to tell you what you can wear, unless it's a parent and a young child. There are so many more important issues that people should be trying to resolve. If the males are not going to be allowed to wear baggy jeans are they going to stop women from wearing short shorts or skirts, low cut tops, or pants that are too tight ? We all know some women who should not be dressing this way do, at least the males are covered up and don't have any body parts hanging all out. A female can just as easily hide a weapon in her shirt as a male can in baggy pants. I think if you see something you don't like look the other way instead of continuing to look. I know this show hasn't aired yet but I saw the previews.

I don't think the government should have to tell people what to wear, but since parents don't seem to have the authority to make sure that their children pull their pants up, then maybe the government needs to step in.  The father on the show who wears his pants low and allows his children to do likewise, stated on the show that there is nothing wrong with it, becase as they grow up their pant swill be pulled up.  Ok!  Well we can all assume that he still has some growing up to do since his pants are still not pulled up.  It's one thing for them to wear their pants that way, but I don't think that most people like to look at these boys underware.  That's why they are called UNDERWEAR.  They are supposed to be worn under your clothes.  Also, I think that someone on the show made a statement that it's comfortable.  How could that be considered confortable?  You have the underpants on the waist and the pants under your butt, while walking with both legs apart, inorder to keep the pants from falling.  If it's comfortable to have the underwear on your waist, why not have both the underwear and pants on your waist?  I think this is so disgusting to look at.  I don't know which Idiot came up with this nonsense, and then find a bunch of idiotic followers.  I am certainly glad my son is grown and does not find it necessary to dress this way.  Also, it makes them look like thugs, and yes they can easily hide weapons under those baggy clothes.  Could they walk into a business dressed this way and get a job?

Yes, some women/young girls need to cover up also.  This is only the flip side of the baggy pants.  I would put both dressings in the same category.  That father on the show needs to stand up and set an example and set some boundaries.  That's what being a parent is all about. Not joining with the kids and giving them their way, knowing that it could eventually be to their detriment.  Teaching your childrent to dress this way, will not give them the know-how to dress properly when they are ready to go for an interview.   However, to each it's own.  I just don't want to look at peoples underwear........and most of them look extremely nasty anyway.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking!

Quote From: sat_man2

when the two kids went to the mal, they showed the reactions of the tenant employees whose job it is to assist the customer.

there looked like there was hardly anyone , the public, in the mall.  ask them, the customers,  if they want to see someones butt.  you did no show that.  get with law enforcement, Richland Co sheriff dept has a video on how many weapons can be concealed in the baggy pants.  there are a lot of issues with this subject, you really need to look at all sides.  i work in a mall, most customers do not like it, most reactions are disgusting.

i do not want the government doing more regulating.  please let people know that malls are private property, if they dont want it, they have the right to tell you to leave.

My husband and I were standing in a line at the store when my husband nugged me to look at a white young mans pants.  We seriously did NOT know what was keeping them up but as annoyed and puzzled as we were, we didn't say anything or make any obvious jesters.  Most of us have been taught not to stare, it doesn't mean we don't see it or have an opipion on how right or wrong it is.  Your tape didn't show true reactions.  Another question I have, what do the girls that fall in this age category think of this look?  What does it say to THEM about a guy who were's there pants like this, are they more or less likely to want to date him?

P.S I do not think of this issue as racial or gay.  But I DO NOT think the goverment has a place in this discussion.  Its a fad, maybe with this type of press the guys that where there pants this way will realize its not really as cool as they think it is.

Will

Quote From: will6012

I understand what you are trying to say. I would expect theist from a 23 year old. At 53 you should have learned history.

What the Nation was:

1. Mafia ran rampant in the North.

2. Illegal alcohol sells.

3. Woman could not vote.

4. Woman ave no equal rights.

5. Children worked long hours in factories.

6. The Indians were murdered.

7 Blacks spent 400 years in slavery Iin America.

8. Blacks could not vote.

9. Blacks were hung without trials

The civil rights of this nation started in 1965, when Blacks were given the right to vote and when women were give the right to vote. This was the start of America's morality climb. We then fell off the hill when they legalized abortion, the murder of children. We fell further when they took prayer out of schools, kept it in Congress. We fell a little further when we started teaching the Theory of Evolution as a fact. No theory is ever fact and scientifically it is not even probable. Fell further, when we allowed the psychological code for homosexuality to be removed in 1973 and people refused to wait until a Gay gene was found. There is none to be found. We are in the toilets as our children have to face a future where God's design and law for marriage erodes and what God calls an Abomination is allowed as marriage. Sodom and Gomorrah here we come again.

Our challenge is to become something great as a nation and that is not what we were when we dropped two A-Bombs on when in children in Japan in 1945. We will never get it right without God. I would rather piss off a few people than piss off God.

I love what you have written.  The good old days were not all that.  I agree that as a nation history is going to judge us for many things.  The vote however I have to correct you on.  Women won the right to vote in 1920. Black men were given the right to vote after the end of the Civil War.  There were creative ways that the right was denied to black men- generally in the south.  In the north black men voted more freely.
