Do you think the government should be allowed to keep you from wearing something others may find offensive? A debate is gaining attention across the country: Should baggy pants be banned? You’ve seen them, primarily worn by men: oversized pants hanging so low that sometimes the entire behind shows! Local ordinances in 12 states have banned the low-slung look -– but are they unfairly targeting African-Americans? Dr. Phil speaks with guests on both sides of the debate -- including parents. And, Reverend Al Sharpton and Grammy nominated hip-hip artists the Ying Yang Twins join the show with their views on banning baggy pants. Get up to speed on this issue, before YOU get caught with your pants down! Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

The Baggy Pants Debate

I think one problem with this topic is that people don't know where the fine line is between wearing pants a little big and letting pants sag.

Wearing pants a size or two big is fine. Letting pants sag below the but is not good. I don't think this is something they learn in the home from parents. This is a new style young people have picked up just by being in the world. They pick it up from there friends in school or brothers and sisters.

I think another problem with the baggy pants debate is one society of people judging another society of people. The old folks that are in there 40's,50's, and 60's look down on the younger generation who wear there pants in this style think its low class, trashy and is all gang related. Its more related to the fact that when the the old generation of people where young they didn't wear their pants like that.  It gives them right to judge and have a negative opinion about it.........

Of course its much easier to say, "PULL YOUR PANTS UP"............

You are way off base about "Old Folks" in their 40s,50s,60s looking down on the younger generation for the way they wear their pants.  In the first place - not all of the younger generation does it - some of them have enough respect for themselves to not show their underwear or their butts in public. They are not wearing their clothes the way they were meant to be worn, and I don't care who says what - there is no way that a person can walk or do a job effectively with the crotch of their pants hanging between their knees and ankles.  I believe it's just a phase - like mini-skirts and go-go boots were, and it will go away. The ones that still do it will be the ones out-of-style. I just hope it's soon.  I'm 56 years old and I work with a 33 year old woman who has 4 boys - 3 are teens. She does not allow her boys to dress like that - so it's not just the "Over 40" group who thinks these guys look ridiculous.

 Hi

You could be right I may be way off base. I describing it how I see it. I've seen old folks or people in

the older generation be judgmental towards people who wear their pants this way. Some old folks are judgmental and got issues. They refer to young people as trash, the N word, and think there parents are idiots for not teaching them any better. I know not all the young generation dress with there jeans sagging, but some of them show off more than you can imagine.

I agree I think it looks ridiculous also. If this is a phase I hope it ends soon otherwise, the young generation is into a new trend of fashion.....................

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Quote From: mlburgess

I just got back from vacation and watched the show about baggy pants, and I need to respond.  Should the government be allowed to tell us how to dress? NO!  However, every establishment in this country (schools, churches, stores, clubs, restaurants, ball parks, etc.)  has the right to enforce a dress code.  And what of the "Baggy Pants" business they lose? So what?  They will have enough grateful patrons who will keep frequenting their business to eventually make up for it. Personally, in my place of employment, I wouldn't hire any one who came in dressed with their underwear showing, nor would my boss allow me to. Forget how sloppy it looks, but how can anyone move effectively with the crotch of their pants between their knees?  And if they go out in public looking like that, think of how their work area would look!  No, we want people who have more pride in their appearance than that. Pants were made for the waist band to be around the waist!

I thought underwear were meant to wear UNDER clothing - hence the name UNDERwear!

And, Al Sharpton needs to get a new soapbox. Every issue he talks about he claims someone is targeting the black guy.  Are there not whites and hispanics walking around showing  their underwear?  Come on, Al - get a real issue to stand up for.

Idea for a Dress Code - NO SHOES, NO SHIRT, BAGGY PANTS, NO SERVICE!

Maybe the government can't establish a dress code. But, any  establishment certainly can. And, if blacks say it's targeting them, tell them it's targeting the same thing that's getting whites and hispanics turned away, baggy pants and visible underwear. Come back wearing pants that fit and we'll gladly serve you.

Baggy Pants

Like the burqa the argument that a conceiled weapon is culturally racist but having said that if anyone finds it offensive the most effective way to stop or lessen it is to try to ignore it. Like many fashion trends it starts to shock conservative minded people but keeps pushing the boundaries when the shock lessens. Rather than shock the look of blank and simply ignoring will eventually stop it. Mini skirts, long unkept hair, plunging breast lines, short blouses, even the glamour rock of the early 70s all were "offensive" to someone else but please if we make a big thing of it, it will only encourage those who do it.

01/28 The Baggy Pants Debate

Personally, I don't like the look of baggy pants with boxers showing. Just look at the obnoxious stand-up comic in The Nutty Proffessor! That is how they look to me, comical. But if you want to wear them, be my guest. I'll wear my skin-tight fluro jeans and look like something that should have stayed in the 80s and you might think I look ridiculous; you are more than entitled to that opinion.

When I was 18, I had my nose pierced and was treated like a criminal in a shop. That hurt, I am an honest person. Needless to say, I didn't go back to that shop. A similar thing happened 10 years later, when I had my hair braided (I am white BTW.) Are braids and body piercings associated with criminality, because they are considered "ethnic"? I have my suspiscions.Do people have the right to discriminate against you, me or anyone, based on their physical appearance?  No, they do not!

I do, however have a confession to make: When I see a man sporting a T-shirt slogan such as, "CIA: Clitoral Investigation Agent", I will automaticly think that he is a jerk, with little or no respect for women  -and I'll probably shoot him a dirty look. This might make me a hypocrite, I cannot help the way I feel. I always have the option of looking the other way (following the dirty look.)

And another thing....

Something I forgot to mention: Surely the goverment has more important issues to deal with and legislate than saggy-baggy pants and boxers! As the good Dr said, if such items of clothing are outlawed, where is it all going to end?

Baby Daddy and Baggy Pants in same sentence?

Quote From: juzzaboo

My boyfriend which is my baby daddy is African American and he is from th north side of tulsa which is the bad side of tulsa that is majorly African American. There are gangs and shootings and moms pushing a stroller in 30 degree weather there and who would think a nice man like him would come out of that kind of place. In his family everyone looks up to the grandparents and to elders are very respected.  They were raise to respect there selves and have pride in the family and not embarrass the family. They were taught to make something of themselves and prove that someone out of that environment can make it in life without being in a gang. How a family is raised there is by the family not just the parents so when a kid goes to school the represent a family and how the present themselves the men in his family can wear baggy pants as long as the boxers are not showing they have to wear a belt and believe me if they are at a family gathering and a elder finds you with your pants low they will pull them down and embarrass you and then they will tie a rope around you to keep your pants on and then you get made fun of the remainder of the day and you don't want to make grandma mad in the family. Grandmas run the family if she catches you, well you might as well leave and come back next family gathering. Also in school they hope you do a good job my man graduate with honors and the president of his class and all around sportsmen He came to the top and made a good name for the family. So I do Say it is not respectful for yourself or the people around to present yourself like that it just gives you a title and why would you want a title why don't you want to make something of yourself and show that you have over came something of living in such a run down part of a town and that you concurred life!

If "Baby Daddy" is such a fine person, why is he still in school and not out working to provide support.  Who is feeding and housing all of these accidental children, me and my truly outstanding sons, who work hard, pay a lot of taxes and do not make babys for other people to care for and support?  You say Grandma runs the family,  In all but scum families, there are parents to run them and Grandparents to  visit it they are still living.  If Grandma raised her own children right rather than pawn them off on her own mother, she has done her work.  Who ever enjoys the roll in the hay, should take care of the offspring. That means provide for the physical care as well as the necessary money.

Government should not have to legislate adult men pulling up their pants and covering their rear end.  If that is the part of themselves they want to show off because it is the part of themselves they are most proud of , remember everybody has a butt and they all look similar. The world would be a lot better off if everyone would get their mind out of thier pants and learn to read, get a job, a hobby, play a sport.  Do something besides procreate "accidental offspring" for others to have to support by lowering our standard of living to pay the ever rising taxes  take care of your responsibilities.

poo pants

I look at some of the young men here who have taken on the trend in Australia.
It's a real turn off as it looks like they've sh** themselves with their pants crotch bagging beneath their bottoms and half way down their thighs.
I cracked my friend up at a night club last year by referring to a couple of baby boys in baggy pants as having sha* themselves and wearing poo pants.
Maybe these fashion victims should think about how they might be attracting such comments before they blindly follow the latest fashion fad.  This fad is not flattering on anyone.  If your going to try 'showing off your package' boys, check the view from behind first.  Yuck!!
