(Original Air Date: 02/15/08) What happens when a parent’s agenda becomes so extreme that his or her children are forced to live a harsh, stoic existence? Dan and Janna are a college-educated couple married for 15 years with seven children, ages ranging from 2 weeks to 14. They have no income, no heat, no running water and are about to lose their house. Dan and Janna believe that their primitive lifestyle is God’s will, and that they are being led by the Lord. Janna’s mom, Carol, and stepdad, Rich, are worried about the health of their grandchildren. Are they eating enough? Are they warm enough? They say because the children are home schooled, they live in a cult-like home environment, and are not exposed to the outside world. Carol and Rich are willing to bail this family out one last time, but why are Dan and Janna refusing the help? After eight failed businesses, why won’t Dan get a job to support his family? Where will they go when they are forced out of their home? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Scary People

That man reminds me of a Jim Jones wannabe.  He's got his own little cult going there.  I really hope child protective services gets those children out of there.

take children away

Right now, all that I have to say is that is is basically the grandparents fault. The grandparents are giving the parents money instead of taking the children away. Social Services say that if the parents are not able to supply for the children, the children will be taken away. It will be really hard, but that is what you should do. Now, when the parents see that their children are not there any more, they will definately go out and get a job so that they can get their children back.

Upsetting

It is so upsetting to me when these "Christians" go on TV and sound like nutcases, making all us true beleivers look bad. This guy is using God as an excuse not to work.  He is lazy and deeply afraid of life...and he is dragging his family down with him.  His wife needs to leave him and get a clue. BTW...love your hosw Dr. Phil, but you have WAY too many commercial breaks.  I stopped watching after about 45 minutes because I got so sick of all of them...5 breaks in a 30 minute period...too much!

Living on a Prayer

The first time I saw this show I thought then that Dan was very wrong in his outlook and Jan is so wrong for putting up with this.   I also think this man is not going to change I may be wrong and for their children I hope he does.   But he is so very misguided.   He is an abuser because he is doing this for his own selfish reasons and he is using God as an excuse.   That is wrong and God will not and cannot use him when he is using God as an excuse to be lazy and worthless.   Those children should be taken away from them until they get jobs and get off their lazy butts and work at protecting those children.   This sounds harsh, but harshness and calling a spade a spade is just what is needed and if something is not done about those children and soon they will be living in a car somewhere and then in great danger.  Thanks for listening.

What did God do for them?

This show aired in Feb. of 2008.  It is now July of 2008.  I would like to know what happened to this family.  Everyone is so down on this family for trusting in God and no, I do not agree with everything that they were saying but as a Christian I can understand where they are coming from.

I do agree with Dr. Phil that Dan needs to get a job with a paycheck then pursue other adventures.  But I also agree with Dan that we have to trust in God to lead us to the right place.  I just think Dan is being misled a little by the Devil.

I agree with Dr. Phil that we cannot take the Bible a turn it into something that fits us.  Instead we need to read the Bible and then pray to God to show us how to walk out His word.  We have to be careful though because the Devil is right on our tails and sometimes we hear more from him rather than what God is saying to us.

Please, don't be to hard on this family instead let us pray for them.  If you are at all concerned about the children then the last thing they need to be slip up into different homes.  Join with me in praying that they do the right thing and hear the right words from God.

dumb woman

I can't believe that Janna believes everything Dan says.  I think she has been brainwashed.  Dr. Phil kept referring to them as an educated couple.  They may have gone to college but they are not educated.  Dan insists that the lord will provide when in fact his in-law have been providing and enabling them to continue with this life style.   Does Dan really think that by growing trees and fish that he is providing for his family?  He can't even provide water let alone, heat and electricity.  How many times must he try to make a million before he realizes that it is not going to happen?  They need to get jobs.  NOW.  Someone should call child protective services in the area that they live in to have them investigated.  The grandparents should save their money for the childrens college education.  Why are the children home schooled?  Who monitors their education?  That is a very sad situation and hopefully Janna will wake up and see that her children are really being neglected and stop mollycoddling Dan.   There she w as at the end of show rubbing his back trying to make him not feel bad because he felt as though everyone was picking on him.  He needs to grow up and assume the responsibilities of fathering seven children.  Janna should worry more about her children because Dan certainly does not care about them.  Dan worries about Dan.  What will he say to St. Peter  when/if he reaches the pearly gates and has to answer for his behavior.

Dr. Phil--Why didn't you offer mental health assessment?

Dan and Janna appear to suffer from extreme arrested development of their emotional and psychological selves. From their use of religion as an excuse for failure to deal with their responsibilities it is clear to me that they should be relieved of the privilege of having the custody of their children until such time as they can truly provide the basics of shelter and stability. Their children have rights to, and their rights are being seriously violated.

I have to ask Dr. Phil....how do you disagree with this assessment? While the grandparents may have some unattractive qualities, they are likley the grandkids best hope and supporting them in some kind of an intervention would clearly help them "save" the kids. AS for those who were watching that may need to know what to do if they face similar dilemma, whether religion is a part of the story or not, I don't they got any solid direction of how to proceed.

Dr. Phil, I think you missed an opportunity to do more.

Get a Job, Get a Life

The Bible is not a literal thing; it is a book of how one needs to interpret his or her daily life with a moral compass.  From the first chapter on Creation to the last chapter on the alleged End of Days, it is filled with lessons on how to live, on how to behave with one another, and on how to be a good person.  This itself can be conflicting because different chapters say the same thing in a different way, sometimes leaving out whole pieces.

I don't pretend to be an expert on the Bible, I haven't read the whole thing, but I think that I can safely say that NOWHERE in the Bible does it say: "Thou Shalt Sit on thy Butt and have the Lord your God hand things to you on a Silver Platter".

These people need a biblical wake up call.  They are teaching their kids that you can get something from nothing, which will damage them in the long run.

Danger, Danger, Danger

Dan is clearly and clinically dillusional.  Janna is totally co-dependant and and entered Dan's dillusional way of thinking and acting.  Notice how Janna "pats and rubs" shoulder throughout the entire show - like Dan is being picked-on.

These children should be removed immediately from this home and the parents should be legally mandated to get psychiatric help before they are allowed to even see their children again.

My great fear is that someday Dan will wake up and decide that today "God is calling his children to heaven".  Many dillusional people use GOD and an excuse for their confused mind and their failures.

As it was pointed out, God should not be expected to take care of every problem or desire we have.

Please Dr. Phil, if you really care about these children, take the necessary action.  I did not hear nor did I find anywhere on this website any mention of their last name or where they live or I would do it myself.  Perhaps the grandparents will read this and take some immediate action.  This is a clear cut case for Child Protective Services and the lack of the basic essentials in their home, such as water and electricity is reason enough to remove them.

I really believe that this man, and possibly this woman are capable of killing their children.  They will use GOD and their reason.  I HOPE I AM WRONG.

Update?

I realize Dr. Phil has to have vacations and show reruns but if there was ever a show that I wanted to see updated, this was it.
I did some research on this family and sent it in to the show.

CPS definitely needed to step in. Dan had some personal problems other than the ones we saw on the program. I hope someone has rescued those children.
