(Original Air Date: 02/15/08) What happens when a parent’s agenda becomes so extreme that his or her children are forced to live a harsh, stoic existence? Dan and Janna are a college-educated couple married for 15 years with seven children, ages ranging from 2 weeks to 14. They have no income, no heat, no running water and are about to lose their house. Dan and Janna believe that their primitive lifestyle is God’s will, and that they are being led by the Lord. Janna’s mom, Carol, and stepdad, Rich, are worried about the health of their grandchildren. Are they eating enough? Are they warm enough? They say because the children are home schooled, they live in a cult-like home environment, and are not exposed to the outside world. Carol and Rich are willing to bail this family out one last time, but why are Dan and Janna refusing the help? After eight failed businesses, why won’t Dan get a job to support his family? Where will they go when they are forced out of their home? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

P.S.

I wanted to say my late husband used to say "The harder I work, the more I am blessed".

There were folks in our church who "waited for the check to arrive in the mailbox" as proof that God supplied. He hit them with his quote.

Living on a Prayer

Quote From: dawneen

How are they purchasing groceries and clothes? The Picture that is displayed shows them very well dressed. How can parents not work and support their family? Are they living on an inheritance?

I'm not positive but I think Dr. Phil's show give people clothes and makeup.

Living on a Prayer of insanity

Those poor children.  It seems Dan is mentally unbalanced and the wife is just in denial.  As usual the children suffer.  Did I hear his parents also gave them $50,000 - they didn't let his sister say much.  The grandparents have to be concerned about their retirement money.  Every loses.

Follow the Bible?

I think Dr. Phil missed the boat on this one, for a couple reasons. Here are my observations:

1. Dr. Phil was off-base by saying that we should't "cherry pick" when it comes to the Bible. The fact is, the Bible is filled with so many nutty things (instructing how to beat your slaves, death to all non-believers, not having sex because the world will end soon, leave your wife and kids for Jesus, etc. etc.), you pretty much have to pick some things from the Good Book, and forget about the rest.

2. It looked like the kids were home-schooled (that may have been mentioned). Dr. P. should have insisted that the children go to school, if for no other other reason than to get them at least one, and probably two hot meals a day. It also would be good to get the kids away from these two kooks for at least a few hours every day.

3. As for providing for his family, that won't happen -- not with seven kids. He's not going to find a job that pulls down that kind of money. That boat sailed a long time ago. But getting a job to get heath coverage would be a good idea.

4. The family has to start getting food stamps and welfare.

5. Despite their bizarre -- and maybe creepy -- lifestyle, I have to admit that this is a loving family, and their children, although intellectually, medically and nutritionally deprived, do seem amazingly happy and healthy. Not the worst family I've seen on the show, by a long shot.

6. He should have told the parents something like: "You might want to consider that God sent you to me for some advice, so you might want to take it."

02/15 Living on a Prayer

Quote From: kimbasham

yes...i am serious about the abortion thing...as i do agree that abortion is murder and birth control is preventative... i believe that pro-life is just that for life. who are we to decide on birth, especially as christians.... if you are having sex which is the means of creating life, then you should accept the responsibility of the act. As a bible believing christian I personally have never found in the Bible that Birth control is acceptable, if anything I have read that MANY children is a blessing unto is father.

Psalm 127

3Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

4As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

5Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

If it be by murder or prevention - stopping life is just that - stopping life from exsisting

agree or not, that is the great right of our freedom - the joy of this country - but not reason to judge someone for having children and calling it abuse

So, what about a situation where having another child would endanger the Mother's life?  i have two beatiful boys but, after they had to break the collarbone of my second child to get him out., I was advised not to get pregnant again and get my tubes tied.  My first son was born by emergency  C-section and both my pregnancies were high risk. I'm sorry, but God gave us the means (by way of surgeries and pills, condoms etc.) to prevent pregnancies.

Obama

Quote From: mzk736

I worked for social services for 30 years, and it isn't the answer to everything.  Putting children in foster homes is very difficult and often is not the best thing. There aren't enough foster homes to take care of the need without trying to put all children there.  It is better to work with the parents and help them to be better parents.   We are such an affluent societ that we think everyone should have everything.  I wonder if Dr. Phil himself hasn't benefitted from his childhood.  It seems like everyone who is doing well had bad childhood experiences, look at Oprah too. I have had parents say to me, that why should they do differently because children from bad parenting often do better than ones with good parents. I would tell them that isn't true that good parenting helps children the most.  Studies prove that, but we see and hear of people who overcame poor childhoods.  The current poster child is Obama.  Would these three have suceeded as well as they did without being in those situations?  Some parents feel being poor causes determination to do better.  I had the best parents in the world, they were kind, loving, had more money than the average person.  Did that help me. yes, expectations were high, and I tried to reach them all, but failed miserably at some.
Obama comes from a wealthy background. He was raised by his grandparents. Do not put him in the "poor" bag with Oprah and Dr Phil.

02/15 Living on a Prayer

I definitely made it a point to watch this show after seeing the comercials advertising the content/subject matter. This is a very important subject to look at,especially these day's as per the different new's shows and the vast array of problems that seem to be devasting this nation not to mention the world. I do feel this show needs to be followed up on and Dr. Phil needed more time to get into more history, background of not only this couple, but this subject  matter seems to be affecting millions of Americans and thier familys and the nature of jobs and resources in this great nation of ours. I do admire this familys belief in GOD and it did sound to me as if he is not a lazy person, just maybe needs some guidence as to the job market. I do not remember where this family resides (city/state), it looked as though it was a rural setting and maybe there unfortunately are not jobs available in that area. The man mentioned several times that he did have resumes sent out for a job but apparently had no responses from those employers. Is he overqualified/underqualified or are those jobs with his degree/experiance now in India, China etc. As far as other comments I read regarding taking the children away from these parents should we also go to appalachia (SE America) poverty stricken areas and take away thier children also because those parents can't find or don't have good jobs. I guess they must also be "Deadbeats". Also this is a real shame in this country that money is tight but the child porn industry supposedly is in the billions of dollars, along with the adult porn industry, sports, drugs, $10,000 martinis, $100,000-150,000 private partys, millions of dollars for a presidential party, etc, etc, etc( NBC,CNN,ABC, PBS,MSNBC,FOX, And So many specials that are on cable, but education is failing our children, and also hardly letting our children actually be children again. I Do believe these children should be in public school so the parents have more time for job search and/or go to work, if there are actually jobs available in thier area. As far as the taxpayer paid healthcare, food stamps at least they are LEGAL americans! I haven't read any comments about the supposed 12-14 million illigal immigrants who are able (supposedly) to receive these benefits. I do pray that this great nation of our's can get our priority's and real issues back in line, as GOD would like his believers, Children, People however that should be said, ASAP while we still have a chance before Saudi Arabia, China or whomever owns us. Then where would we be. The land of oppurtunity Still???? May "GOD" BLESS US ALL! I TRULY look forward to any and all comments. Thank you!

The mother of the children

The mother of the children is angry at her parents for some reason. I think that health care is provided by medicare, and food stamps provide food. A laundry mat takes care of clothing and bottled water can be purchased for drinking. Goodwill has very nice inexpensive clothing and furniture. So I believe she is playing a game with her mother; a very dangerous game for all concerned.

Absurd

It's ideas like this that give Christians a bad name.  I couldn't agree more with what Dr.Phil and the Pastor said.  You can't pick and choose passages from the bible to support certain behaviors.  It's all or nothing.  God doesn't want you to be deceitful or lazy.  He definatly wants you to provide for your family.  In todays world it seems that it is ok to let someone else take care of your family.  What happened to the good ol' fashioned work ethic?  I'm glad that's something that my parents and my husbands parents instilled in us.  Sure, it's great to have dreams of a better career or starting a business, but it takes time and you MUST have a day-to-day job during the process. I do wish the best for this family and hope that they turn the focus to their children and as the very least providing a "comfortable"  place for them to live.
