Could a grave danger be lurking in your home? If you believe the headlines, you know that catching the Superbug can have deadly consequences, but should you be concerned? How can you spot the danger, and what can you do to stay safe? Dr. Phil gets to the bottom of these questions and others. Melissa's son, Mark, was just 13 when he went to the hospital and wound up with MRSA, also known as the Superbug. Learn about Melissa’s tragic loss and why she thinks her son’s death could have been prevented. Then, 19-year-old Stephanie has been battling the Superbug for almost a year. Get a firsthand account of her experience with the disease, and find out what advice her doctor gave her that has Dr. Phil shocked and concerned. Even doctors aren’t immune to the Superbug. Dr. Drew O’Neal had an accident while on vacation, and what happened next changed his life forever. He shares his valuable insights as both doctor and patient. Plus, two years ago, Glen was your average sophomore playing on his high school football team -- until he contracted the Superbug right from the team’s locker room. Find out what important lessons he learned that could help protect you and your children from the disease. And renowned pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears weighs in with the latest information and shows off products to keep on hand that could save your life. Join the discussion.

Precautions are often not followed.

My mother contracted MRSA  after having heart surgery.  A nurse who was really on the ball didn't like her cough and sent a sputum (sp) sample out for testing.  The next day when I went to visit her she was quarantined.  When we went into her room we would have to totally garb up etc...  Problems I saw however, included:  maintainence personnel who would come in to fix/take care of something and DID NOT garb up, DID NOT use hand sanitizer when they were leaving the room annd you just know they were going to another room....  On a few occasions nurses would 'pop in' for something and not be garbed up too.  This was at a very well respected hospital.  When mom was ready to be released, my niece, who is a nurse said we needed to insist they recheck for MRSA, but we encountered reistance on that front (from the hospital).  Mom ended up being fine, but it made me question whether I would go there for treatment.

MRSA

HI Everyone not everyone who goes to a hospital can get it. My daughter Serena is almost 3 years old and has been batteling MRSA sinc she was about 1. The only time she has ever been to the dr is for her well child checkups. It took us over a year before it was actually diagnosed with MRSA. She gets it in her genital region, it's the only place she gets it. She got it so bad she refused to wear clothes or underwear for along time because she thought if she had something tight against her it would come back and hurt her so bad.  My sister is a CNA  and father-in-law is a Pharmacists so thats the only contact she gets from a medical setting. We finally took her to a dermatolagist and he prescribed her a specail soap and takes medication when she gets it. She now gets it every few months which lasts about 2 weeks at a time.

Super bug

2 of my daughters had MRSP, one worse than the other.  What was frustrating was ER docs who didn't know what it was.  Then when we had a for sure diagnosis finding a medicine that would help.  My one had 5 or 6 different episodes, the ones on her faces the worst.  Most doctors (Kaiser) didn't believe us, one told us not to share shavers, I said "she doesn't shave her face!".

I called the CDC when we noticed she would get the start of a sore but it didn't turn into the big sore with the eruption of puss. I thought this was significant, meaning she was making some sort of anti-body.  They weren't in the least bit interested.  All this suffering and we thought maybe it could help other kids.

She hasn't had an eruption in over a year now and we are very thankful.

Thanks for listening.

a question 4 anyone who can help

my husband was advised in January of 2008 that he had MRSA and than later when I questioned about this I was advised that he had it but did"nt and that he was not contagious as long as we practiced good hygeine. My husband has been very ill since than and only recently started turning around. Is this common for patients to b told this and would he have months of being very ill rapid weight loss and now slowly be getting better. Hope someone can advise...

Will it ever go away?

After watching the show, I am concerned that the impression given was that MRSA is only contracted primarily in hospitals. I was not sick or hospitalized, yet I contracted MRSA in December and passed it to my fiancee and kids before we even realized it wasn't the "spider bite" they originally diagnosed. Despite the nasty scars left behind, I thought that the antibiotics had killed the infection. Low and behold, a few weeks ago the bumps returned and the bone weary fatigue and exhaustion returned as well. It is almost like I could feel it fighting to come back and I am wondering if I will ever feel like myself again. Has anyone else felt the lingering effects of MRSA? The Dr.'s seem to be as clueless as I feel.

daughter struggling with MRSA

My daughter got MRSA in July. Was misdiagnosed (spider bite) and then treated. However, ever since the heavy antibiotics she has suffered from severe joint pain and joint swellings every few days.  She says the pain is a 12 on a scale of 10! We can't get an explaination.  Any ideas or similar experiences out there?

Double Trouble

My 30 year old twin boys have a condition the doctor referred to as hidradenitis suppurativa.  It is very similar to Stephanie's condition.  Nicholas contracted this debilitating disease about 7 years ago.  It started as a small abscess at the base of his spine.  The surgeon merely sewed up the hole.  A few months later it migrated to his groin and he has had several emergency operations that left holes the size of a tennis ball that needed to heal from the inside out.  Needless to say he was on his back for at least a week.  A couple weeks ago, a lump the size of an egg appeared on his left jaw.  Powerful antibiotics and pain pills seemed to help and the lump has now shrunk to the size of a dollar coin, but we don’t know where it will show up next. Lately, flare ups have been surfacing every 6 to 8 weeks.

Jason’s experience wasn’t as severe at first, but over the last couple years the flare ups have become extremely painful. He has several lumps under both arms.  He’s had the lumps removed, only to return and multiply within a couple months.  You can literally see raised sinus like tracks trailing down his abdomen to his waist.  More abscesses have now appeared on his groin and now he has them on his neck.  The surgeon wants to remove both arm pits and replace with graphs from his thighs.  We are seeking a second opinion of course.  It's difficult to know when to accept a doctor's diagnosis, but with such radical surgery I believe this warrants a second and possibly third opinion.  He is waiting to see a dermatologist and plastic surgeon.  We live in rural New Brunswick ... most specialists are2 to 3 hours away and have a wait list of 1 to 3 years.

After seeing your show I’m wondering if this is a type of superbug.

In this neighborhood

In December a widley popular vet here in West Central Indiana injured his back, otherwise in good health we all expected a 6 week recovery time but in 3 weeks he had died of MRSA, it came in at a blood draw site. In relating to many the circumstances of his passing almost everybody had a family member or friend also affected.
I advised everyone to be their own advocate and watch as much as possible for health workers to use sterile technique. I am sure it has been  restated time and again but if you are having a proceedure of any kind, even the simple blood draw be as aware as you can and them too of what can get contaminated. I will not hesitate to ask them now to put on new gloves or uncap a new needle.
