Could a grave danger be lurking in your home? If you believe the headlines, you know that catching the Superbug can have deadly consequences, but should you be concerned? How can you spot the danger, and what can you do to stay safe? Dr. Phil gets to the bottom of these questions and others. Melissa's son, Mark, was just 13 when he went to the hospital and wound up with MRSA, also known as the Superbug. Learn about Melissa’s tragic loss and why she thinks her son’s death could have been prevented. Then, 19-year-old Stephanie has been battling the Superbug for almost a year. Get a firsthand account of her experience with the disease, and find out what advice her doctor gave her that has Dr. Phil shocked and concerned. Even doctors aren’t immune to the Superbug. Dr. Drew O’Neal had an accident while on vacation, and what happened next changed his life forever. He shares his valuable insights as both doctor and patient. Plus, two years ago, Glen was your average sophomore playing on his high school football team -- until he contracted the Superbug right from the team’s locker room. Find out what important lessons he learned that could help protect you and your children from the disease. And renowned pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears weighs in with the latest information and shows off products to keep on hand that could save your life. Join the discussion.

my 16 yr old daughter and 4 yr old son have had mrsa for almost 2 yrs. the bumps just keep coming back. they are not worried about dying or anything serious happening to them, because so far nothing bad has happened to them. they go to their doctor and get anti-biotics and the bump goes away after a few days.

Last October I got these sores in my nose that are VERY painful and would not go away. In December I went to the doctor for another problem and asked about my nose. I was told I needed to leave the scabs alone, apply antibiotic ointment to the sores and they would go away. Well, they finally went away in early January, but they are coming back.

I first heard about MRSA about the time that I got the sores in my nose but no one ever mentioned that the infection could affect the nose so I blew it off. Now, after watching the show today I am scared to death! I could not believe how many times it was said that MRSA could be in the nose. I have two children and a one year old grand daughter that I am now very concerned about.

What testing needs to be done to verify if this is MRSA? What questions should I ask my doctor without sounding like a paranoid freak? I just so happen to have a doctors appointment tomorrow morning and I want to ask about it, I just don't want to sound stupid. I know nothing about MRSA, except that it's highly contagious and can be deadly. Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!

As a nurse that sees lots of sores in noses, I would venture to guess that you had ( and have again) an infection commonly known as impetigo.  It is, indeed, a staph infection very common in schools, daycares and nursing homes that occurs as a secondary infection. Kids get it often from scratching insect bites or other lesions with dirty fingernails, and a persistent nose-picker will have case after case.  Not that I'm implying that about you!!!  However, schools require treatment with oral antibiotics as well as topical antibiotic ointments before students can return.  We also remind the family members to be very conscientous about handwashing, and to be sure the affected family member used only their own linens and towels.  I suggest to parents that they launder sheets and towels daily for 3-5 days in hot water and a hot dryer, using bleach if possible.  If you are breaking out again, go back to your dr. and ask lots of questions--that's what you pay him/her for!

Want to know more about MRSA and general staph in your community?  Ask a school nurse!

MRSA

I FIRMLY BELIEVE BETTER PRECAUTIONS NEED TO BE TAKEN IN NURSING HOMES.  THIS IS A PLACE WHERE THE OLDER RESIDENTS ARE MOST LIKELY TO CONTACT MRSA.  NOT ONLY THE RESIDENTS BUT THE WORKERS.  I HAVE FOUND THAT WORKERS TAKE THIS TOO LIGHTLY  I HAVE SEEN WORKERS GO INTO RESIDENTS ROOMS THAT HAVE AIR BORNE MRSA NOT EVEN GOWNED.  THOSE WORKERS THEN PUT NOT ONLY OTHER RESIDENTS IN DANGER BUT THE OTHER WORKERS.  I WAS TOLD THAT AIR BORNE MRSA ONLY SURVIVES IN THE AIR FOR A SHORT TIME BY MY NURSING SUPERVISOR.  NOW I FOUND OUT TODAY FROM THE SHOW THAT IT CAN SURVIVE UP TO 10 DAYS ON SURFACES.  WE NEED TO BE BETTER INFORMED ABOUT THIS.  OUR SUPERVISOR  DID NOT EVEN SUGGEST WEARING GOGGLES IT WAS ME A CNA THAT SUGGESTED IT AND SHE SAID THAT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA.  THANKS DR. PHIL FOR THIS SHOW TODAY MAYBE PEOPLE WILL WAKE UP AND REALIZE THIS IS A SERIOUS SITUATION

Getting rid of MRSA

My herablist has helped people rid themselves of MRSA a few times - Angela Harris at Herbally Grounded in Las Vegas.  Also, here are some additional studies on Young Living Essential oils about killing MRSA.  Obviously pharma's don't do it...what do you ahve to lose by using natural therapies.

G 04% solution of cinnamon oil completely stopped the growth of 35 fungi within 2 hours.

G .004% concentration of cinnamon oil destroys various strains of H. pylori.

G Diffusing a blend of essential oils of clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon killed 99% of bacteria in 20 minutes (add oregano & thyme for an even greater effect).

G Oregano is a powerful antibacterial agent that kills staph, e coli, listeria & more (25 different bacteria).

G 12 microliters of oregano as an antibacterial agent is equal to 10 units of penicillin (but doesn't kill good bacterial!)

G From the University of Medicine in Kyoto Japan using lemongrass against the ulcer-causing bacteria H. pylori: "Resistance to lemongrass did not develop even after 10 sequential passages, whereas resistance to clarithromycin developed under the same conditions.)

G A 2001 British study tested tea tree oil against the fungi candida & MRSA among many other bacteria - the oil was effective against 64 of 90 bacterial isolates.

G A 2004 study at Queen Margaret U in Edinburgh found cinnamon & clove oils decreased production of enterotoxin A & B.

G British surgeon Joesph Lister, the father of modern antiseptics, was the first to disinfect surgical rooms with eucalyptus oil vapors to drastically reduce deaths from infections. (Listerine antiseptic includes the essential oils of thyme, eucalyptus, wintergreen, & peppermint).

G In 1987 the Int'l Journal of Food Microbology reported that essential oils of cinnamon, thyme, & clove killed 92% of 25 different gram negative & positive bacterial strains.

G Researchers from India reported in 2006 that the essential oils of cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, geranium, & thyme were equal or superior to the powerful anti-fungal drug Hexaconazole.

G Only 12.5 mg (1/4 of a drop) of peppermint oil in a liter of air was effective in stopping germ growth.

G Clove, tea tree, peppermint, & eucalyptus oils effectively treated Herpes virus in vitro & post-outbreak.

G Per studies tea tree, lavender, peppermint, oregano, & thyme essential oils showed the strongest killing power against MRSA & VRE resistant bacteria in 1997 UK studies.

G From the BBC News, March 20, 2007.

Tests of new machine at a hospital have found it could be effective in the battle against the superbug MRSA. Consultants at Wythenshawe Hospital found that using a vaporiser to spray essential oils into the atmosphere killed off micro-organisms. Airborne bacterial counts dropped by 90% and infections were reduced in a nine-month trial at the burns unit.

G At least 25 hospitals throughout the U.S. - in NE, WI, AZ, NY, MN, PA, AK, FL, IN, OH, MI, CA, NJ, CT, MA, DE - use essential oils to control bacteria, viruses, & molds - News article references:

USE BLEACH!!

Quote From: rasquire

I use rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol, 70% USP) for everything from personal care to cleaning items around the house. A while back, I was in the grocery store, and all they had in that category was a spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol... a smaller bottle than I'm used to and bit more expensive, but I bought it since it was the only brand there (the brand was "AlcoVap").

Eventually, I found it useful for disinfecting stuff -- a quick spray like Lysol, but without the flowery smell. Plus, I *know* what's in it, and I'm pretty sure that isopropyl alcohol will kill whatever it lands on.

So now, whenever I purchase isopropyl alcohol in the regular 500 mL bottles, I use them to fill the AlcoVap spray bottle, and I'm ready to disinfect whatever needs disinfecting.

rAS

  USE BLEACH

THAT IS BETTER THAN ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL........

  AND USE IT EVERY DAY.

BLEACH BLEACH BLEACH

HAVE A GOOD DAY

MRSA

Quote From: pkgobble1

Last year my daughter had a kidney stone...i took her to the emergency room and then a few weeks later she developed a lesion..she showed it to a dr friend and he said that it was a boil and it is caused from being overweight....my daugter tld him she had never had one and she had been overweight most of her adult life....then i insisted on her seeing our regular family dr...when she examined kelly she tld her that she thought it was a boil..by then several had came and went...kelly voiced her concerns that it cld be mrsa and the dr said no that is not what it is and gave her medicine...after taking all the medicine they kept coming back and she called the dr and she gave her another round...still came back...then my granddaughter who is six asked me to look at her back...i thought she might have hurt herself, but within a few days there was one on her thigh and the one on her back was an open wound and puss filled...that was on a sunday and i tld my daughter that i wanted her in the dr. office monday morning...when a culture was ran it was mrsa...kelly called the family dr to tell her that now her daughter has mrsa and that she  had it all along...then the dr. asked what the child was given and she perscribed that for kelly...they bought now have bruises where the lesions were...they were tld that it wld take months for these to clear up...and what really bothers me, if my granddaughter hadn't have gotten this my daughter wld still be self medicating herself for this...she was treating them as if they were boils...why aren't dr's more educated abt this and what to look for...i have to agree with oprah when she says if something is bothering you listen to your heart....kelly's heart tld her it was mrsa and she tried to tell the dr, but she was just brushed off...if she had been listen too my granddaugher wld not have had to gone thru this....and another thing that is frightening is that a nursing student that works at our local hospital said so many patients were coming in for something else and then when they leave they develop mrsa and now the insurance is refusing to pay for them to be rehospitalized to treat the mrsa...they are telling the hospitals to take responsibility...

Karen,

Remember and insist that upon entering and being discharged from the hospital or ER, have the nose swabbed. Insist!!!

MRSA

I had MRSA in 2003 due to open spinal surgery. I was cut three times in five days half way down my back. I have spinal instrumentation from L-1 to S-1. I went to my surgeon and he advised me to go the hospital right away and he opened me back up and did so twice more to rid me of MRSA. I was on Vancomycin therapy at the house and was taking 1250 cc's once every 12 hours for over a month and finally I was rid of it thanks in part to my surgeon and two wonderful ID doctors. Now when I go to the hospital I have to have a private room and all precautions are taken. this is some serious stuff. Thank God that I made it.  But I stay on guard constantly.

About Colloidal Silver

Quote From: tscape

I heard a Master Herbalist speaker about 6 months back. If I remember correctly - COLOIDAL SILVER - was recommended for the MRSA.

It is an herb that can be purchased through www.naturesunshine.com. It's called Silver Shield. I don't know dosage or anything like that, but I do know that herbs should be taken at least 1 hour apart from medication.

I hope this helps.

Colloidal  Silver is just distilled water and silver it is not an herb it is one of the very first antibotics.  You must be careful when using it ask you Dr. first.  It can cause other problems.

super bug

I have been employed in two differant hospitals in Canada in the sterilization departments. The work load is phenominal heavy work short handed and no responsibility from Administration as to help to keep sufficient staff on board to have time to deal with sterilization to our satisfaction. Just recently the sterilizers were down and not functioning so the instrumentation was being sent to two differant hospitals in workers cars with deaf ears and eyes watching over this. Management was told they needed a better water supply to maintain these sterilizers with no avail. The engineers confirmed water going into sterilizers were rusted because of old piping. I personally got onto the local TV crew to investigate it took them 3 weeks for administration even to admit there was a problem in the mean time the Engineer threatened to quit and Operating Room Nurses were also complaining on deaf ears. As a worker at a hospital you can not say a thing because you are considered a trouble maker. I had an incident that an instrument was sent to me from maintenance which was not titanium or stainless steel so everytime i tried to sterilize it the saw rusted I was very upset could not go home with that on my mind. I went to manager of OR and she said she did not have time to deal with this problem if the doctor wanted to use it oh well.  I took it upon myself to ask the doctor to come out of surgery so i could suggest he ncot use the saw and the reason why i showed it to him all rusted and said that I would not sign it or date it and I suggest he not use it. I came in the next morning excited to see he had not used it no thanks to management not doing there job take responsibility for who and what they stand for pissed off in Vernon British Columbia
