How can you spot the danger, and what can you do to stay safe? Dr. Phil gets to the bottom of these questions and others. Melissa's son, Mark, was just 13 when he went to the hospital and wound up with MRSA, also known as the Superbug. Learn about Melissa’s tragic loss and why she thinks her son’s death could have been prevented. Then, 19-year-old Stephanie has been battling the Superbug for almost a year. Get a firsthand account of her experience with the disease, and find out what advice her doctor gave her that has Dr. Phil shocked and concerned. Even doctors aren’t immune to the Superbug. Dr. Drew O’Neal had an accident while on vacation, and what happened next changed his life forever. He shares his valuable insights as both doctor and patient. MRSA

MRSA is NOT a virus. It is a bacteria and there is definitely a difference. Viruses must have a host to replicate while bacteria do not need a host. Antibiotics treat bacteria not viruses. There anti-virals, but these are in their own class.

I know firsthand the pain of MRSA

My father went into the hospital on 1.9.03 with what was thought to be the flu. A few days later we found out it wasn't the flu, but a staph infection that was raging inside his body.  They started him on IV anti-biotics, and he appeared to respond at first, which raised all of our hopes. I travelled the 100 miles each way every day to see him and after a week when I went to his room he was wasn't there. The had transfered him to the ICU and was put on a ventilator. The Dr.'s said he'd been having some difficulty breathing so that felt that it was better not to stress his body out by fighting to breathe, but to fight the infection. They said tests had shown that the infection wasn't in his heart, lungs or brain so he still had a 50/50 chance of beating it. He was alert through all of this, but was in pain. 3 days later, my daughter asked me "what was that red stuff" in his ventilator tube? I knew it was blood, but I didn't want to tell her. My brother was flown in from his military base in England at the Dr.'s suggestion.  I got a phone call from my mother on 1.20.03 to hurry and come up to see my father as the Dr. said it was only a matter of time, it had spread to his heart and brain as well as his lungs which I already knew.  He died 15min. after I got there.  I saw him at Christmas and although he was just shy of his 78th birthday, he had been in great health and of sound mind.  No one knows how he got it (MRSA), or when.

Now I care for my elderly father-in-law who also has MRSA, he got it in the hospital 2 yrs ago, it started on his foot, and now is all over his body. He won't keep himself clean, or medicate or dress his wounds, nor will he allow me to do the same. He's refused nursing care to come in to assist him and I'm helpless. I'm here because my sister-in-law was going to put him into a nursing home if I didn't .He needs someone to watch over him since he's almost died from kidney failure and overmedicating himself with Cumadin.  He's in denial saying the severe itching he suffering from is either dry skin or a rash of some sort. Unfortunately he's passed it on to me, as well as my dog. My Dr. has me on clavamox regularly to try and keep it under control, and my vet has my dog on the same. Apparently I've sold my own health as well as my dog's in an effort to keep him home where he's stated numerous times this is where he wants to stay and die at. My Dr. wasn't surprised when I finally presented symptoms, despite my thorough sanitizing of areas that he uses and touches. He apparently used my back brush in the shower to "scrub the peeling skin" off his calves one day and I was unaware of it when I went into the shower the next morning. He says now that I've been diagnosed that he must have gotten it from me or my dog. Of course his hospitalization for it this past November he convinced himself that it was due to a medication allergy despite being told that he was highly contagious. People beware! If you know of any elderly person that has this horrible disease protect yourself  and your family anyway and everyway you can, including the 4 legged family members.

1 year old with MRSA

My one year old son has MRSA. He got it when he had an adnoidectomy. He was hospitalized for 3 days due to it. He had an allergic reaction to the antibiotics that they gave him for it and now he has it again, not even two weeks since we was in the hospital. They doctors are doing a great job with keeping me up to date as to what I need to do. We are washing hands all the time and disinfecting the house daily until we get rid of this. I just find it weird that I have NEVER heard of this until two weeks ago.

The superbug.....

When I was a child...back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth....the doctors said that we can get immune to antibiotics, and eventually they will not work.  Is this what is happening?

What about letting the body heal itself?  Some germs are good germs?  Does the "5 second rule" not apply anymore, because our bodies are not resistant to anything because we are all 'hyped' up on antibodies?

As a child we would go out and play, get dirty, wash up for meals and take a bath before bed.  My daughter forbids her children to even get dirty.  My grandson doesn't know what its like to see a worm close up, or heaven forbid, pet an animal at the petting zoo.

Its sad, but I do want my children and grandchildren to be safe, (thats a given)...but I want them to experience the world also.....

04/01 The Superbug

Quote From: blueredmall

I have been dealing with this since I went into the hospital to have my baby. i came home and then noticed a rash on my hands. i thought it was from washing dishes, etc....but after months i find out that it is MRSA STaph and my dr. tries everything. my baby got it, and the peditrician's office is the only one who took the time. i had been put on medication after medication. nothing worked. i got two different PICC lines and had them in for 5-7 weeks at a time. stillnothing. then once Dr.;s got sick of seeing me they would say i needed to go see a dermatologist, then the dermatologist would tell me i need to go to Infectios Disease, where AIDS patients do go.  I have no one who will see me now. no other options. i just found out i was pregnant, i will not be able to touch my abby when it is born if i do not get rid of this.  i have three other people who had babies at the same hospital and they too contracted this MRSA Staph. One couldn't hold her baby until it was 5 months old. I too like the guest Stephanie, they do not tell you anything. they never tell you what might happen. it is RIDICULOUS. these Dr.s do not know anything either. They do not know what else to try, and they each tell you do is something else. they are now telling me i am a carrier. i had never had any infections. ever.....my husband and mother too contracted the MRSA and they told me i could not cover the infected area. that it needed air. my infectious disease Dr. told me that he too had it. I do not know what else to do. we need help.
I had MRSA 6 years ago. The two things that worked with me and my daughter was Kephax antiboditics and bactriban oitment in our noses. The MRSA bacteria lives in your nose. We put it in our noses for a month every night and it went away. Hope that helps.

04/01 The Superbug

Quote From: paulapforbes

I have been fighting mrsa since feb. 2006.  I had a hysterectomy that went terribly wrong.  MRSA was not diagnosed  for ten days.  My lower abdomen looked like a cantaloupe and my incision smelled awful.  I kept going to the doctor to find out what was wrong.  They said I had a uti and sent me back home four times.  My incision ruptured at home. I put moist heat on it to draw out the green fluid that was coming out and called my doctor.  They told me to come in the next day.  When the doctor looked at my incision he said it was infected and that I needed to go into the hospital again.  He took a scalpel and cut my stomach open in his office.  My white cell count was 21,000.  Temp 104 and climbing.  He told my daughter that I was going to die.  It was her 18 birthday.  She took me over to the hospital where I had an infectious disease doctor come in.  I am allergic to almost every antibiotic there is.  He contacted cdc and they put me on two different antibiotics.  I had to pack my stomach at home for 5 months.  My incision was the size of a dollar bill.  The muscle was eaten by MRSA. Eighteen months later I finally went to a Hospital in Mississippi to have my incision closed.  During that surgery I had a heart attack.  Later that night I had another.  Since coming home MY hair which I normally can sit on started to fall out.  Now the whole back of my head is with out hair.  My memory is gone.  I have three wonderful children and one grandchild.  Mrsa has since shown up on my hand.  It looked like a spider bite.  Tested positive for Mrsa.  Now the glands under my arm are as big as my thumb.  I,m hoping it isn't MRSA.  I don't want to give this to my family.  Can anyone please tell me why I can't get rid of  this.  I had breast cancer 9 years ago and had both removed.  How do I remove Mrsa.  Please anyone with any information tell me what I can do about my hair loss as well.  I haven't cut my hair in over 12 years until last month.  But it want stop coming out.  If you have any information please post it. Thanks.
when i had mrsa 6 years ago the doctors gave me Kephax antiboditics and bactriban oitment for my nose. the bacteria lives in your nose. you apply the oitment in your nose every night for two months and that took it away for me, my daughter, my mom, and sister,. Take care.

Kill MRSA on surfaces

There is a technology (which has been tested by Kansas State University and the University of Cincinnati) that kills MRSA on surfaces.  You can see the studies on this website.  It is available for commercial use as well as for homeowners.  Check it out at:  www.activepure.com/glream
