Don’t miss Dr. Phil’s exclusive interview with Brianna Denison's mother who is speaking out for the first time since her daughter's body was found. Nineteen-year-old Brianna made headlines when she was kidnapped while she slept on a friend's couch. Brianna's killer – an alleged serial rapist -- is still on the loose in Reno, NV. And, a controversial issue is heating up the headlines: Where should registered sex offenders live when they’re released from prison? Residents of Long Beach, California say not in their neighborhood. They’re outraged that an apartment building is allegedly housing 13 registered sex offenders, and the building owner is reportedly receiving $1,000 per month to house them. Former tenants, James and Getania, were disgusted to learn that the sex offenders were living in their building, and local residents weren’t happy either. Dawna owns several properties near the apartment complex. She says she’s losing tenants and the sex offenders are stalking others. Then, Jake Goldenflame, a registered sex offender who was convicted of molesting his daughter and young boys over 25 years ago, says he's still attracted to teenage boys, but says people like him have no resources and need to live somewhere. What does Dr. Phil think? Should the sex offenders be forced to leave the community, or should their neighbors just learn to live with them? If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is going to deal with it now! Join the discussion.

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Disturbing Headlines

Quote From: grammysachs

I hear so much about registered sex offenders but isn't the issue which offenders have received treatment and which have not? Contrary to popular belief, sex offenders who have been in treatment programs are not very likely to re-offend. I recently met a nice fifty year old Christian man; he is a registered sex offender who wrote a book during his twelve years in prison. I am cautious, of course; still society is brutal on this man. Cant a sex offender, pay for his crime, receive treatment, be rehabilitated and live in my neighborhood?

My sons predator had already received treatment 3X before he molested my son...how many times does it take for this treatment to work? after the 10th victim?like common lets face it I am sure there is a percentage that is truly rehabilitated or that were given the label due to unjust reasons like a underage girl on my space or face book gets involved with an older man daddy finds out and it all gets blown out of whack ....but lets face it folks there are some of these monsters that are like cancer...some cancers can be put in remission for the rest of their lives....but remember some cancers are  terminal as well....

Maybe the laws are starting to see not all are bad

The 2007 Legislative Session brings the following changes to Sex Offender registration effective January 1, 2008:

House Bill 2333 – Provides relief from sex offender registration for certain sex crime convictions
Who qualifies?

Anyone currently registering for certain crimes if:
  1. The act was consensual between the victim and the offender but due to the victim being under 18 years of age, the offender was found guilty; and
  2. The victim was 14 years of age or older at the time of the crime; and
  3. The offender was less than 5 years older than the victim at the time of the crime; and
  4. This is the offender’s only sex crime conviction or adjudication.

Anyone convicted in adult court or adjudicated in juvenile court of certain crimes after January 1, 2008, if the court determines the above circumstances exist and the sentencing order states the offender is not required to register as a sex offender.

What crimes qualify?
            Rape in the third degree
            Sodomy in the third degree
Sexual Abuse in the third degree
Contributing to the Sexual Delinquency of a Minor
            Sexual Misconduct

sex offenders

the first issue is why are we talking about them being in our neighborhoods when they should NEVER BE RELEASED FROM PRISON IN THE FIRST PLACE? these people violated their rights to roam freely when they violated the rights of their victims..i say scoop them all up and put them all on an island like the one in the t.v. show LOST and leave them there so that they devour each other

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Disturbing Headlines

Quote From: enyadreams

I feel your pain and I totally understand your frustration. Almost the same thing happened to my son years ago but not with "my space" of course. He has to register and it NOT only messed up his life it has mine too! Believe me when i say that people want to believe the worst!  They like the smut and sex and all the nasty that goes with it rather than listening to the truth and trying to see some good in people and then they kick you when you're down!

Everyone remember .................it is against the law to harrass sex offenders too!! I am not sticking up for REAL OFFENDERS!! By no means but like one person or more have stated there should be categories  NOT just all thrown into one big boiling pot !

My son did time in prison and he took all the programs he could get to help him to be a better person and to be able to identify situations that might get him into trouble again. He has been out for over 5 years now and is married and has a little girl and they are very happy together but that is NOT without problems of course. We live in a small community of Danish stuck up "better than thou" people and omgggggggg some people will do anything to try to cause you grief! They just don't have a life i guess so they have to get into yours! Such a shame I'd say!!  Joyce in Minnesota

You give me hope for my son, Joyce in Minnesota, I guess we are all gonna run into those people that want to point the finger and say and think things that they have no idea about. I too live in a small community but thank God most of them KNOW that my son isn't  a monster like so many on this board are talking about. Some one on here claims that my sons story isn't exactly true. Well, think what you want, who are you to judge. Like I said, you don't know the whole story.  So lets just hope one day you don't have to live what some of us are living with your child. It is easy to assume things of people, we are all guilty of that. We want to judge a book by it's cover.  I myself, if I knew a sex offender moved in my neighborhood, I would find out the persons story. It might not be he is a child molester, just someone trying to get his life back on track after making a terrible mistake.

My father was a sex offender

My father, who has now passed away, unfortunately was  prone to lust after women no matter if they were elderly, married or young enough to be his daughter's age.  He was married to my mother and they had a disastrous life together.  He sexually molested me when i was 23  and i was devastated. I was married then and i was too ashamed that my own father did that to me and i couldn't tell my then husband of 3 years. I was so confused because when i was little he loved me so much and i was his little treasure.  He always would buy me things on his payday and spend heaps of time with me reading the books he used to bring home to me.  I used to sleep between mum and dad until i was nine years old.  If he did anything to me inappropriatly i would not have known ,as i slept with my parents since i was a toddler. I just hope and pray that he never did anything like that to me.  As i was saying up top, that i was very confused after he molested me and wondered why he loved me when i was a child and not then at 23.  At 23 he went  over his boundary , but he should never have thought of me in a sexual way.  I think i let him down when i ran away from home at 16 with my then husband.  That's another story full of alcoholism and sexual abuse from the life my parents allowed to happen in our house.  From then on he changed and only saw me as a sex object and it was other women too as I mentioned at the beginning. He got fairly sick with diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver and ended up in hospital with gangrene etc, heart attack etc.  The night before he died i went to see him at the hospital and i am sure he was hallucinating as he looked at me in a strange way, I said how are you Dad?  and he said nothing, but lifted his gown and exposed himself to me.  I was so upset that i ran off and never saw him until he died later. My Shrink at the time said not to take it personally but it's very hard not to .  I still couldn't hate my dad, i did love him and i guess i still do after 25 years gone.  I could never have gone to the police and reported my dad.  I didn't trust him with my two girls either.  I always had that fear  in my head.  What's left now is anger, confusion, and some self-blame, maybe if i didn't run away at 16 my dad would never have molested me or seen me as a sexual object.  I still always have that block when it comes to my father.  I can't forgive him for the anger and confusion he has filled me with, as i cannot find closure this side of Life.  Maybe one day when i pass away i will see him and will find closure and peace then. I have two other sisters and he was always the proper loving father to them but not to me so i do take it personally i guess.

sex offenders

Quote From: jansel

I think sex offenders should be put in prison for life.  It has been proven that they cannot be rehabilitated. I agree with the person that said Loce them up and throw away the key!!!!!!

Hi

I totally agree with you on this one, thanks for letting me read your message

Lock them up forever!

Quote From: timtamau

Stuff the political correctness.  Stuff the human rights cr*p.  Why should these animals have any rights.  They stole the rights off of innocents.  I think they should all be locked up somewhere away from normal civilisation.  Even that is too good for them.  I cannot say voice here what I truly think should happen to them!
I think child molesters and rapeist  should be locked up forever. They do not deserve to live in society and have any chance to ever molest again. The little children's lives are destroyed forever and their innocence is lost. They have to live with what these animals have done to them for the rest of their lives. I have a few suggestions as what should be done to them so they could never rape again!

sex offenders

In regards to the sex offenders.  Just where are they suppose to live.  If they did their time, they should have some rights. I was molested as a child. Not by any stranger it was a friend of the family.  He had a family.  No-one made him move in a certain place. I do think they should have someone watching them, but I doubt very much if that would do any good. I live now in an area where there are sex offenders. I see where they live and what they look like and have to go on with my life no matter how I feel.  If you have small children they should not be outside unsupervised anyway. In this time we need to always be aware of who is around. But I feel you don't have to go out of your way to make these people miserable. leave them alone and they most likely will do the same.

I agree

Quote From: wilmav

I was molested by my father.  I didn't tell anyone until after he died.  When I think back, I know I would do the same thing again.  I knew I was a victim but many things made me choose not to tell.  I loved my father for the father he was the first 14 years of my life.  I didn't then, nor would I now, want him to go to prison.
What if instead of prison, we sent convicted sex offenders to an area set apart from society.  A small city where all sex offenders could live, work have and run businesses.  They could live a rather normal life but with very restricted visitation.  No children could be allowed into the city.  Adults could visit as much as they like. It seems to me that prison isn't working for these people.  Neither is having them live among us. They could support themselves instead of having taxpayers pay for their support.  They could have everything those on the outside have, just not freedom to leave their city.
I haven't heard of anyone being "cured" as yet.  Because of this, it would have to be a sentence for the rest of their lives unless the help they received resulted in a true cure.
I agree with your thoughts on the sex offenders. They should live in their oun town and if their families seem to think it is ok then their families should live with them. I have a sex offender renting a house in my private subdivision. I went online and found out all the info on this man. It said he was 18 years old FORCE sexual asult on a 7year old child. He now is 25 has a child that goes to my son's school. I wrote to the state asking if it was ok for him to be on the school grounds and they said yes! We even had on our local news a story about a man going to the colleage who is a sex offender! There is also a father in our neighborhood who is in court now  for incest and sexual asult. I drive my kids and others to school which is one block away. Why because we the innocent are afraid, not the sex offender. We have about 5300 people who live in our town and 18 register sex offenders. That is registered how many are not? A town about 7 miles away has 160 sex offenders what is wrong with this world. The women teacher who has sex with a minor should be treated the same way as anyother sex offender! The only way the authorities will do anything is if they offend again. Then we have to live with the fact we new this person was bad. Why our world always waits until it happens again is so upsetting to me.
