Don’t miss Dr. Phil’s exclusive interview with Brianna Denison's mother who is speaking out for the first time since her daughter's body was found. Nineteen-year-old Brianna made headlines when she was kidnapped while she slept on a friend's couch. Brianna's killer – an alleged serial rapist -- is still on the loose in Reno, NV. And, a controversial issue is heating up the headlines: Where should registered sex offenders live when they’re released from prison? Residents of Long Beach, California say not in their neighborhood. They’re outraged that an apartment building is allegedly housing 13 registered sex offenders, and the building owner is reportedly receiving $1,000 per month to house them. Former tenants, James and Getania, were disgusted to learn that the sex offenders were living in their building, and local residents weren’t happy either. Dawna owns several properties near the apartment complex. She says she’s losing tenants and the sex offenders are stalking others. Then, Jake Goldenflame, a registered sex offender who was convicted of molesting his daughter and young boys over 25 years ago, says he's still attracted to teenage boys, but says people like him have no resources and need to live somewhere. What does Dr. Phil think? Should the sex offenders be forced to leave the community, or should their neighbors just learn to live with them? If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is going to deal with it now! Join the discussion.

Keep them in JAIL

I AM SO ANGRY WITH OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM.  WE GET MORE JAIL TIME FOR FIREARM POSSESION THEN WE WOULD FOR HURTING A CHILD!!!  COME ON!!  IT MAKES ME WONDER HOW MANY POLITICIANS ARE DOING THE SAME THING?  THEY SAY OUR JAILS AND PRISONS ARE OVER CROWDED.  FRY THE ASSES ON DEATH ROW AND KEEP THE DISFUNCTIONAL JERKS IN THERE THAT KEEP KILLING OR MOLESTING.  BETTER YET GET RID OF THEM SO WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT OUR CHILDREN GETTING HURT OR PAYING FOR THEM WHEN THEY GET LOCKED UP.  THEY DON'T DESERVE ANYTHING AT ALL.  WHY SHOULD THEY?  SO THEY CAN HURT SOMEONE ELSE?  SEND THEM ON TO HELL WHERE THEY NEED TO BE!!!  THERE ARE SO MANY OF THEM BECAUSE THE ONLY THING THEY HAVE TO DO IS GET REGISTERED BIG FREAKING DEAL MAKE A SEVERE PUNISHMENT!!!  WE NEED TO FIGHT THIS.  HOW LONG DO WE HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS.

A whizz? Prove it

Quote From: ladiehawke

This is a topic that has come up more than once between my circle of friends. We have talked it and taked it to death many times. There is no good answer.

Firstly, these people have to live somewhere. Our laws do not allow them to be taken out of society permanantly. Truthfully, I find the idea of them living all in the same building, isn't a bad idea.

My big problem with the sex offenders registery is that today someone can be labled a sex offender for getting drunk and taking a whizz on the side of the road. There are many people out there that have been forced to register for petty stupid little things that shouldn't be listed as a sex crime. Forcing someone to register as a sex offender should be saved for those who truly are sex offenders. And I hate to say it, but if this country is gonna place a scarlet letter on these people's chest and basicly prevent them from being able to work and live anywhere, then the bovernment should figure out a way to house and feed these people. You can't make a group of people pariahs and not see to their well being.

I don't believe you.  A. that you talk to your friends about this many times.  Why?  What did they do that is so controversial.

  B.  That someone is registered as a sex offender for taking a whizz on the side of the road.

Why should a registered sex offender be allowed to work and live anywhere, at all?  Beyond being shackled and required to pick up road side garbage?

Give us any and all cases of those who have had to register as a sex offender for "stupid little things".

Maybe we would all agree the offender has a   stupid little thing....however, it is what they did with it that determines their legal status as a registered sex offender.  Every defender of this disgusting behavior  as deserving some element of humane treatment should back up their  wishy washy comments with hard facts and cases.

Quote From: gwarrior6

It's very scary to know how many sex offenders live next to you!  There are about 170 in the 10 mile radius from where I live (I need to move).  There's about 20 that live half a mile away!  It's a shocking reality check, thats for sure.

You can find out the # of sex offenders that live in your area, their names, addresses and pictures from the the family watchdog site:

Concern

Quote From: resurgan

Shame on you. Just because the wife or gf are okay with the pervert doesn't mean the minor's should be drug along for the pervert's ride.  THEY ARE INNOCENT.   What makes it okay for a pervert to have their own children around to molest?   Sometimes,  the wife/mother knows what is going on and do nothing.  They should lose everything,  their freedom, their home, their children. They should be imprisoned for life.

If they were involved in the assaults they should lose their lives.

I think you may be a little confused by what I said.I didn' t think it was ok for any of the sex offenders to have childern. I think they shouldn't be allowed to do anything but live and work in their own little village and not be allowed to leave it. Tha's why I drive the kids to school a block away! Because I do not trust them. What I don't understand is why the States have not laws for this. The other day I saw this man on the school grounds and I see many kids walking through my subdivision to get to the school. I have neighbors that  are in their 70's and 80's who live across the street from this person and I don't like it at all. And as for the neighbor who rented the house to them I have no respect for her! The guy that is in court right now for incest and sexual asult I think it was on his step daughter who was 15 years old.  After June last year we didn't see her and her sister told us she was pregnant and went to live with her real father. In that case I think the mother is wrong to. The girl was always by herself at the lake and the mother never being around as if she cared. There are two younger girls from this man and I can't even think of what may have happened to them. When will this issue be addressed by our state government? I think we have to all go to our government and keep on going until they do something.

ignorance

Quote From: freesia83

How many times have teenage girls dated/had sex with someone only a few years older than them? A 16-year old and a 20-year old. The sex is consentual. The girl's parents get angry, have said male thrown in jail, attend counseling, and is labeled a sex offender. When the girl turns 18, BINGO! They still see each other.

I have a very difficult time comparing these sorts of cases to those of people who prey on children or break and enter to assault women. VERY different.

Also, GIRLS LIE! BOYS LIE! It happened so much when I was in high school. Girls were the worst offenders, if I had a nickel for every time I heard about some girl brag about how she slept with a 25 year old and told him she was 19 (some are very believable with the right makeup and clothing) I could pay both my undergraduate and graduate school tuition.

Idiots that tell lies about their ages need to be punished as well.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse, if you are 20 and having sex with a 14-18 you are breaking the law.

and there is a thing called personal responability, if a 25 year old is going to go and have sex without knowing someone ,he is taking a risk, not just with age of the person but stds getting someone pregant.

people lie, so be smart, protect yourself, ignorance no excuse.

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Sex Offenders Next Door

Quote From: robin457

my ex-husband raped our 12 year old daugher, and his sisters 11 year old daughter. i have lived with the problems that these perverts inflict on other people because they are weak. they don't have the kahoonas to deal with an adult they get their kicks violating weaker people. thats what makes them feel good.

anyone that doesn't have enough respect about themselves to keep thier clothes on deserves to be arrested. flashing people ,usally a man in a raincoat at night when thier is hardly anyone around is sick. you dont need a phd to realize that these are sick people who like to make kids thier victims. they want to humiliate thier victims it feels good to them. they all need to be locked in a room with a hundred mothers with some cooking utelsils. we are soft on criminals (ohhh poor baby, you have rights you know) a bunch of do gooders with more time on thier hands than a clock maker, get on thier high horse, they dont' think about the victims unless it happens to thier child or niece or nephew. get real. what these perverts need to do is get taken out . nothing less would work. they always come back. they are like a disease they just keep spreading. i agree that sometimes people are convicted that didn;t commit a crime. but it is rare. how would you like to have someone in your family tormented by the results of a preditor. wake up.

Wow!! you are guick to judge. First off you know nothing about me. A matter of fact as a child i was physically and mentally abused and watched my mom being treated like crap by my exstep father. That is just a few things that i have seen first hand. So do not tell me to wake up. I just know people can change. That people can be convicted of things they never did. but you place them all in the same bunch. Hey you are making such a big deal about them. But how about the people who steal from others, that phsysically and mentally absuse others, that stalk them... ect? In most states they do not have to let the whole world where they live. I mean who would you rather live next to someone that flashed someone as a dare in college and got in trouble for it OR someone that killed someone and now is out for good behavior? you need to wake up and think. Like i said do not judge people. I think the only one who can judge them are the victiums and god. It is not up to us who are not involved at all and do not know all the fact of the case.

what if

Quote From: mapamadams

I watched your show today and my heart broke for the familys who have been touched by sexual abuse. The hatred for the offenders is what bothered me. What if you have an accused offender who is not guilty but to make the situation better for the family and all involved took a plea bargan because he could be guarranteed he would see his small children before they were grown outside of prison? What if he did not have the money to get experts to help clear him. What if he was so scared of the system which had treated him so badly and unfairly he thought a plea would be better for everyone? Where does this good person live when he gets out? What if he has been a productive part of society, a father, a son, a brother and a friend to many? How does he function for the rest of his life as a sex offender? Help me understand how this great country of America can be so unfair and so willing to condem!!!!!!!
You can what if something to death. if we what if anyone charge with a crime there would be no one in prison, if a man takes the plea, he knew what he was in for,  heres one for you what if he did it and he took the plea because he would serve less time, and after he gets out he rapes someone you love, and what if everyone felt like you do, there was no sex offenders reg. and if there was one it could of saved the person you loved a life time of tears.            your what ifs........................

illusion of safety

It feels hard to handle the fact that people aren't safe in their own families let alone in the neighborhood. Adults have been having sex with children for a long time, but now people want to lock offenders up and throw away the keys. Again the American public is asking government and officials to deal with relationship issues and role perception. The rally cry is "Declare war on sexual deviance!" A part of addressing this issue within families involves examining how the family is keeping it's secrets. Don't let your children hear you declare you will kill or maim someone for hurting them, your children will take that information and keep a secret to protect you. Let's not ask our children to do the work adults should be doing.

Another thing, when sex is sold as a luxury item you better expect that people will exploit, humans are viewed as objects in our "progressive" times. Teach empathy.

Pissed off and Iratated...

How can they let these sex offenders live any where they want, when their crime is too much.

I mean they ought to be somewhere where there are no children what so ever, not even living

near a school. I found out there are about 12 or so near us and they live near the school where

my kids go to. That pisses me off even more, Does the state or whoever releases them not care one bit?

Well I think it needs to be a new rule, about where they live.

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Sex Offenders Next Door

Quote From: mandiez_panda

Most of you act like you are perfect. That you have never did anything wrong in your entire life. Have you ever took something that was not yours? even if it was from a sister or brother and you was just a child? Had a bad thought about someone? Been in a fight? Many more stuff that you may or may not got caught doing are wrong and just cause you got away with it does not make it less wrong. You have no right to judge people until you have all the facts. Not just one side of the story but both. Just cause someone is a registered sex offender does not mean they actually did the crime. It just means that the court found quilt of it and for the rest of thier life they are going to be labeled as one. In some states you do not have to rap or sexually hurt someone againist thier will to be labeled as one, but you have to live with being called one. Did you know that in some states you can simply just flash someone or run down the street with no cloths on or close to it and be labeled as one. Plus did you know that if your 18, and your boyfriend or girlfriend is 17 or younger, and the right people find out about it, that you can be label as a registered sex offender with or without the underage person or thier parent pressing charges. All this cause you and the person you love want to express how you both feel for each other. You did nothing wrong but you will be labeled for it for the rest of your life. Yes I know there are some people who are correctly labeled as one. But the ones being released have paid thier time. It is on thier record for all to see. They have to live with the mistake they made for the rest of thier life. I know some are not remorseful about what they did. But some are and it is not right to group them with the ones that are not. A lot want to change and are working on being just normal and are truefully remorseful. But how are they going to do this if your not giving them a chance and if your constantly judging them. I think your just as bad as what you think they are!! They can only change if you give them a chance. That is what the government is doing. So get your facts about someone before you judge them. Also some people who are not labeled registered sex offender are worse than the people who are one. Just cause they have not been caught or were given a less of a charge does not make them better than the ones that are. But you only do not want to live near the ones that are. Get you facts then judge them. You never know what you will find out. Plus what if you was wrongly convicted of something that you did not do. Would you want someone judging you before they got to know you or befoe they atleast find out both sides of the story? Most likely you would not but you are doing that to them. Think about it.

you must be a kid, you think like one, so here is some good advice, don't break the law and you will not have to reg. as a sex offender. if you are 18 and you want to date someone younger, you are taking a chance with your  freedom, don't do the crime and you won't have do the time.

ignorance of the law is not a defence,  you will be prosecuted same as the person who knew they where breaking the law.

its not fair won't get you no where either. so protect yourself and know who you are sleeping with
