Don’t miss Dr. Phil’s exclusive interview with Brianna Denison's mother who is speaking out for the first time since her daughter's body was found. Nineteen-year-old Brianna made headlines when she was kidnapped while she slept on a friend's couch. Brianna's killer – an alleged serial rapist -- is still on the loose in Reno, NV. And, a controversial issue is heating up the headlines: Where should registered sex offenders live when they’re released from prison? Residents of Long Beach, California say not in their neighborhood. They’re outraged that an apartment building is allegedly housing 13 registered sex offenders, and the building owner is reportedly receiving $1,000 per month to house them. Former tenants, James and Getania, were disgusted to learn that the sex offenders were living in their building, and local residents weren’t happy either. Dawna owns several properties near the apartment complex. She says she’s losing tenants and the sex offenders are stalking others. Then, Jake Goldenflame, a registered sex offender who was convicted of molesting his daughter and young boys over 25 years ago, says he's still attracted to teenage boys, but says people like him have no resources and need to live somewhere. What does Dr. Phil think? Should the sex offenders be forced to leave the community, or should their neighbors just learn to live with them? If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is going to deal with it now! Join the discussion.

very agreeable do you know about juvenile offenders though

Do you know that in Illinois juvenile sex offenders have to register but the information is not available to the public?  I know this because my daughter a senior in high school was dating this fellow that had graduated from another area high school the year before.  Recently we just had a regulation passed here in Robinson saying that if you wanted to bring a date that did not go to your school to the prom you had to fill out paperwork and give a copy of that persons id.  Well my daughter had already been dating this guy for 4 months.  And surprise, surprise the school calls me and says your daughters boyfriend cannot attend the dance with her because he is a registered juvenile sex offender.  Well I live in a small community and it did not take much to find out the particulars on this offender.  The only thing I found out is it happened when he was 14 and it was with a 10 year old boy.  I have a 10 year old boy I would have liked to known before I let this man into my house.

And it gets even better a few years ago my stepbrother who lives in Indiana molested my nieces who at the time the youngest was 5 years old.  They sent him away for a couple of years to live in a group home with counseling and then he got to move back in with my dad and stepmom (who live in a retirement community) and he did not have to register and do you know when these sex offenders turn 18 it goes off their record.

The young man my daughter was dating also was a noncompliant sex offender because he moved to a different state and when he moved back did not reregister and they didn't catch him until he was an adult and he still only has to reregister for 7 more years,.  So there isn't even any probation violation recourse for such things.  I will tell you only our voices will change these laws I have been writing to senators and governors anybody I can get to listen and call them they get sick of hearing from you and they might finally do something about this.

I am not saying they cannot be rehabilitated but studies show that 85% of the time these offenders will do it again.  Its attrocious that we as a country care more about protecting illegal aliens rights than our own children.  Thank you concerned in illinois

I cannot stay on this board..

I realize that I cannot fight the world.  The ignorance and the excuses people give for their sexual predator loved ones makes me sick.  No investigation, no facts, just the word of the people that have proven they cannot be trusted.  I'm not gonna swap war stories as the ones involved all have good reasons and people believe them as they continue to this day with their activities, yes the rehab is that great.  Good luck to all you people, you're gonna need it.

I  can't believe what I'm reading, you people really have no idea what you are talking about.
One of my friends, as a drunken joke, mooned some people who were walking by his
frat house.
A 4.0 pre-med student on a full academic scholarship, never in trouble.
and now a registered sex offender.
and a note for you idiots...
HE DOESN"T KIDNAP AND RAPE CHILDREN
HE DOESN"T STALK WOMEN IN DARK ALLEYS
and most importantly,
he doesn't deserve to be put on a deserted island.
grow up.
I have to agree with what you have to say. I am from Ontario Canada, and here ANYONE can be considered a "sex offender" all it takes is a comment like "you have a nice butt" and that can get a sex offender title. It is considered a form of sexual assault here in Canada. Sexual assault can range from a sexual comment to something as bad as assaulting a minor.

I have 4 daughters with my oldest being 5.I am scared to send her top school. I found out there are 3 sex opffenders in the small neighborhood around the school. That really makes me sick. I dont even like going to the store by myself anymore with this killer and serial rapest on the loose.

This is a topic that has come up more than once between my circle of friends. We have talked it and taked it to death many times. There is no good answer.

Firstly, these people have to live somewhere. Our laws do not allow them to be taken out of society permanantly. Truthfully, I find the idea of them living all in the same building, isn't a bad idea.

My big problem with the sex offenders registery is that today someone can be labled a sex offender for getting drunk and taking a whizz on the side of the road. There are many people out there that have been forced to register for petty stupid little things that shouldn't be listed as a sex crime. Forcing someone to register as a sex offender should be saved for those who truly are sex offenders. And I hate to say it, but if this country is gonna place a scarlet letter on these people's chest and basicly prevent them from being able to work and live anywhere, then the bovernment should figure out a way to house and feed these people. You can't make a group of people pariahs and not see to their well being.

These sex offenders gave up their rights not to be labled with a "scarlet letter" when they commited these acts. People deserve to know when their safety and security are in danger!!! By letting these felons live together, you are only fueling their fires. They are going to talk amongst themselves, and get the urges to attack once again from hearing of attacks on others. If they are stupid enough to commit these crimes, they deserve to have the whole world know about it. I like the ideas that some states are doing of having license plates that announcing their crimes, and I hope even more states pick up on this! I think the registery isn't tough enough! Most offenders can register and the people they interact with on a day-to-day basis still won't know what these monsters have done!!! I think we need to crack down on offenders that don't register. We need to protect the lives and innocence of ourselves and our children!!!! We need to get more involved in knowing what is going on in our communities, and protect ourselves from these monsters. They do not deserve to be able to work anywhere where they may be in contact with possible targets. They do not deserve to live close to children or others that they may attack!

We have NO responsibilites to these people. We don't need to see to their well being...anyone who commits this kind of disgusting crime is on their own!!

I believe first it has to be very clear that this is a sex offender.  Then, they should be castrated.  And if they still offend after that what ever body part they used to offend or assault should be cut off or out. Period, if we were to get this kind of serious, maybe, they would not be so quick to offend.
I completely agree! There needs to be way stricter consequences for these people!!!! And to the people who are saying we need to "chill out" and not be so harsh because "a 15 year old can claim rape on an 18 year old even though she told him she was 20" --well first I think we need to send them off for a weekend with these rapists and molestors. Let them hear about the sick things they have done to people, then maybe they will understand how serious this really is. And second, these kids need to take more responsibility and make sure they really know this person instead of going out and having casual sex. People need to know that there are consequences for their actions!!!!!

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Sex Offenders Next Door

Quote From: tina3940

My son is a immature 21 year old that has been trying to have a normal relationship with girls 18 and over. He is a sweet kid and I call him kid because that is what he is like, a kid. Well, this past week we have been going through a tough time as he was with a girl that claimed she was 18 and looked that age. Come to find out she was 15. My son didn't know her very long to find out the truth about her.  We are finding out that this girl has accused others of the same thing she has accused my son of. I assure you my son is not dangerous and could possible have to register as a sex offender.  I think before someone jumps to a conclusion that all people that are registered sex offenders are dangerous criminals, maybe you should actually find out what their story is and possibly they were also accused of something they actually didn't do. I am all for keeping the creeps and perverts away from our children but there are some out there that just got a bad rap. What about these young girls that get mad because the guy figured out their story or just decided the relationship wasn't working. They can make up anything and ruin a young mans life.  As this girl has done to my son.

time for your son to grow up, your story is the same as the mother of the 19 year old,

I knew the age would grow,  where does it end, next there will be a mother of a 25 year old, no wait i think there is one posting out there, saying how their poor boys where trick by these lying girls, it not their falt, it never ends its not their falt, their the adult blaming the child for lying,

your boy is 21 she 15 he should go to jail for a very long time, your son is the creep an pervert who likes younger girls,

at what age do you think a man should be before its just creepy, is it ok for a 40 to have sex with a 15 because his mommy thinks hes young for his age,an knows no better PLEASE

How about we change our laws? One of my favorite quotes comes from the Batman movie...batman begins...."Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society's understanding" yes a quote from a movie...but does that mean it is not the truth? At least how I have always viewed the world. We always have an excuse for these people...they can't help it, it was how they were born, they Are 'trying' not to rape children, or whoever...I mean it goes further then sexual preditors on children, what about women who are raped? and the guy who did it served his 5 years and is now out so he must be okay now...After all he was only in jail for 5 years (with other preditors) Probably didnt learn any new tricks or anything and is probablt rehabilitated...With very little doubt now in cases of innocene or guilt...because of DNA, technology...ect ect...I dont see why we put up with Violent criminals, just because old laws protect these people. Now a guy who is drunk and made a little mistake by showing a bit much of himself, to me is not a violent criminal and should probably do some community service to teach him a lesson...But a man who breaks into a house, takes a child or (anyone) violently rapes them maybe kills them...most of the time they serve a pathedic amount of time in jail, and then are released due to time served or crowded prisons (and that is a REAL issue) I have another idea...its called a needle...its a lot less painful then what they do to their victums...And anyone who wants to tell me my opinion is too strong or lacks compassion....I have little to say to you other then your a weak person who knows little about real life...Ever seen a dead girl? Beating and raped, left under a bridge to die slowly...as she was still alive though her signs of life could only have been measured with high tech equipment? I have...And the person who did it to her was 17...therefore he served a couple of months...im serious....and well lesson learned....Also I myself was a victum of sexual assult at a younge age...and do you know who was punished? me...Because neighbors suddenly wouldnt allow me to go near other children, I was made fun of...I was called names...(I was 4) ...So I say Enough!!!! Enough chances! Enough compassion! These are our lives! Our childrens lives...(I now have 2 children...a boy and a girl) Why is it a right to live even if you take another life away? Why do we care more about the bad guys then we do about the victums? These people made their choices...maybe we should make one ourseves...if anyonne in the government has the guts...Things will only get worse with internet, the way our children dress now, and too many people crowded too close together...My opinion is to fight back...Not with jail time which only costs so much tax money...but with Justice. Im not saying, if you steal a chocolate bar...thats it....Im ONLY talking about proven violent criminals...Or we can continue on...with sooo many missing children out there, or damaged children like myself who spent most of my life ashamed of myself.

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Sex Offenders Next Door

Quote From: ccazphilfan

Wow how is it we have such a one-sided topic on Dr. Phil???????

I recently wrote you about my situation (which is I am a registered sex offender because I had consensual sex with a 15yr old girl when I was 19) and I got no response. I have 2 children now and I cant take them to school or the park. Funny thing is I am not a danger to anyone I just made a bad decision 10 years ago so why should I and my family suffer for the rest of my life for that? Why are we not registering people convicted for drunk driving...they are as dangerous as and harder to cure than an offender is. It is funny a drunk driver can live next door to a family and hop in their car and run a kid down and no one cares to register them. So where is the safety for our kids? Do we only care if they get molested but it is ok if a drunk driver hits them?

I watch Dr. Phil every day and think this is a one-sided topic and am more than willing to appear on the show to create a balance on the issue....if people really want to see and hear the other side of the sex offender story!

You didn't have "consensual sex" with a 15 year old. 15 year old's cannot consent to sex.  You are saying it was a "mistake"...well, what should your punishment have been then?

I'm sorry that you feel your punishment is called for, but just because you BARELY crossed a line doesn't mean you didn't cross THAT LINE. You were a high school graduate, college aged ADULT who had sex with a high school freshmen aged child. I think that is dangerous.

Just because you say you are no longer a threat doesn't mean you aren't. Every criminal in the world can say that, they are some how the exception. Should we let them all off the hook too?

And as for your argument about drunk drivers, well, that is a faulty argument in many ways.

First of all, I personally think people who have driven a car drunk even ONCE should have their license suspended. If they are caught again they should go to jail. So you don't have my sympathy there. You assume people who are hard on sex offenders aren't also hard on drunk drivers...wrong.

Second of all, I am not sure about drunk driving, but sex offenders are notoriously repeat offenders. They cannot be fixed. If you fall into that category, I do not know. But I say better safe than sorry.

I do feel for people who get caught up in the letter of these laws a bit, but I feel it's worth it. I really do.

Quote From: she0420ila

i do think sex offenders have a right to live somewhere and that is behind bars.  Most of them when given another chance, reoffend.  And why should we give them that chance to make another person, child, a victim.  I was molested when i was younger, and not a whole lot happened to him.  and he is still out there, probably doing to others what he did to me.  I can't believe our government and that they think it is actually ok to give these kinds of people a second chance, usually to do what they've done before.

why should We pay for them to live?...get there 3 square meals...I could think of better ways to deal with people like that...much more simple and cost effective ;) to those who say im cold, read my previous message...I have seen much in my life, and im sick of society's compassion for the bad guys...and lack of respect for the victums.
