Don’t miss Dr. Phil’s exclusive interview with Brianna Denison's mother who is speaking out for the first time since her daughter's body was found. Nineteen-year-old Brianna made headlines when she was kidnapped while she slept on a friend's couch. Brianna's killer – an alleged serial rapist -- is still on the loose in Reno, NV. And, a controversial issue is heating up the headlines: Where should registered sex offenders live when they’re released from prison? Residents of Long Beach, California say not in their neighborhood. They’re outraged that an apartment building is allegedly housing 13 registered sex offenders, and the building owner is reportedly receiving $1,000 per month to house them. Former tenants, James and Getania, were disgusted to learn that the sex offenders were living in their building, and local residents weren’t happy either. Dawna owns several properties near the apartment complex. She says she’s losing tenants and the sex offenders are stalking others. Then, Jake Goldenflame, a registered sex offender who was convicted of molesting his daughter and young boys over 25 years ago, says he's still attracted to teenage boys, but says people like him have no resources and need to live somewhere. What does Dr. Phil think? Should the sex offenders be forced to leave the community, or should their neighbors just learn to live with them? If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is going to deal with it now! Join the discussion.

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Sex Offenders Next Door

Quote From: yomama1953

Have you actually talked with the parents of the 15 year old?  WAKE UP PEOPLE!  These folks lie...
Ok, my question to you, say this poster has actually talked to the parents and found out that the parents actually loved the 19 year old and wanted him to marry their daughter after she graduated from high school and then college.  Would you still be saying WAKE UP PEOPLE!  I don't see what your question has to do with telling everyone to wake up.  Lol.  What if she found out that the then 19 year old didn't lie?  Would you think he should still have suffered the same circumstances?  Just curious if some of the facts were validated would your opinion change.

Quote From: dingoyada

I work for a prison and I'm here to tell you that locking up these offenders does not take away their drive as predators once released.  Another problem is that most Americans are under the impression that sex offenders "have" to register when released from incarceration.  They are TOLD to register but many do not.  It's going to have to be up to each individual to know their surroundings, know their neighborhoods and keep themselves safe.

I think if the death penalty was used, we wouldn't have to worry about having a sex offender living around us and our children. When you think what these people put the inocent lives through (torture, rape, and/or death) I believe the sex offenders should get more than just a slap on the wrist. These people get out and just destroy lives all over again. Some people say the death penalty inhuman - what about the inocent lives they take or destroy --- I think it's sickening and they should rid the world of these people.

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Sex Offenders Next Door

Quote From: gigisindoni

I watched 20/20 last night and I feel really bad for the guy. That is NOT a sex offender, that's a guy who made a mistake. He did not victimize that girl, he had a consentual relationship with her and there should be a seperate law for stupid kids. The point of the story is that not everyone labeled as a SO is a predator and the laws are painting people with a broad brush which will only serve to discredit the SOR's.

Another problem with these laws is that they are biased against the boys/young men. Girls mature faster than boys. In many states the age at which a person may marry differs based on gender, and age of consent for marriage for the male is ALWAYS older than that of the female. If girls mature faster than boys and are therefore allowed to marry earlier than boys then why try to convict young men of doing what they do and have done for centuries? Dating younger (within reason) girls. Younger girls/women will almost always go after older boys/men. Perhaps there should also be an age of consent for sexual relations that reflects development in humans based on gender. I'm not in favor of anyone victimizing anyone else, but we do need to be sure that we, as a society, are not victimizing the young men of our generation by labeling anyone as a SO when they are not.
I absolutely agree with you! I had a friend who was 19, he slept with a girl that was 17. She was the instigator, she asked to have sex with him, she was not an "innocent" little girl, she was a well knowing (in more than one way) woman who was 4 months from her 18th birthday and he was charged with statutory rape, luckily he had an amazing lawyer who got him off without being charged as a SO, however it did cost him his job in the military, all over 4 months before she was "legal".

I have to say that is extremely overboard in most cases!!!!! There are men and women out there who have done completely horrible disgusting torturous things, but to say that all sex offenders should get the death penalty is OUTRAGEOUS!!! I was a victim of molestation and rape by 2 different men and I wouldn't even suggest the death penalty for them! If murderers don't get the death penalty, why should sex offenders?! I'm still alive, I've dealt with those issues, it's not easy by any means and I still deal with those issues sometimes, however I don't believe that every sex offender should be put to death.

I'm just curious, how do you feel when you read in the news about an exonnerated individual due to DNA evidence?  Do you pretty much say to yourself, "oh well, we thought you were guilty."  Don't get me wrong.  I'm not either pro/anti-death penalty.  I used to support the death penalty because I, like you, think it's atrocious what these innocent victims go through.  But, I have seen so many cases of mother's lying in custody cases about ex-husband's abuse towards a child, women falsely accusing men of rape and later admitting the truth, and people released from prison after years because it was found that person didn't commit the alleged crimes for which he was convicted.  I totally agree w/getting rid of sickening people who commit the most heinous crimes but I guess I'm not that comfortable any more with our "justice system" to determine who deserves to die.  If you'd asked me a few years ago, I would probably say something stupid like "if he was found guilty by a jury of his peers, he's guilty."  Not true.  Obviously.

My thing is, if you have someone like Jeffrey Dahmer who was found in an apartment with a corpse, body parts in his fridge/freezer, and ultimately admitted to the crimes, yeah, he needs to go straight to the chair.  I certainly wouldn't want someone like him roaming the streets.

03/07 Dr. Phil Now: Sex Offenders Next Door

Quote From: jansel

I think sex offenders should be put in prison for life.  It has been proven that they cannot be rehabilitated. I agree with the person that said Loce them up and throw away the key!!!!!!

No prison life...I don't want to pay to keep them alive ----->DEATH PENALTY !!!

This people are sick and never can be reformed - once an offender always an offender and they should be put to death and those who believe different...they should imagine the inocent life or lives that have been destroyed!

Your dime

Quote From: ramair

House and feed them on my dime? NO FRICKIN' WAY. As Dr Phil often says, you choose the behavior, you choose the conseguences. When these sex offenders chose the behavior, raping and molesting women and children, I'm not talking about roadside whizzes, they chose the consequences of being social pariahs.

House and feed them on my dime? NO FRICKIN' WAY

Whether you feed them without bars or behind bars, it’s still your dime. I think if businesses would not reject an offender applicant because of what they did or didn’t do, then you wouldn’t have to put out so many dimes as most of them will be glad to be employed. These are humans. I know some offenders are unteachable, but many are. While incarcerated, there needs to be required counseling to all offenders to open up and discuss what they did and why they did it. We can spend millions on new prisons or press legislation to pass death on all offenders, but are these the answers to this epidemic? If parents keep an open communication with their kids and take time to address their problems while they’re still young, then kids won’t have to go elsewhere to learn it from someone else whom we don’t approve of. That could be the start of their misspent youth. We have to give kids all the education they need with love and correction. If parents ignore their kids problems hoping they’ll go away, then get ready to put out more dimes.

good post

Quote From: peachykeen123

Good post!  I like the example you gave.  I think that until people are presented with tons of "what if's," they don't think before coming to a conclusion about a specific situation.  Myself included.  I still do it.  We all do.
very good post. i am a victim and a offender. I agree all i want is people to understand not all offenders are rappest or things like that. I do not want anyones sympathy. I want people to understand. and to understand some of us have family and kids now. We may be on the list but we are not all freaks.

Knowledge is power..

Wrong country

Quote From: vicky63

There are so many sex offenders out there that this idea would be cost effective for the government - the tax payers.  We need to build gated communities in all states and major cities for all sex offenders.  A trained guard should be posted at the entrance and only those occupants may enter.  They should be subject to vehicle and body search upon entering and exiting the community.   The authorities may search their homes, vehicles or persons at any time without warning or warrant.  Children should never be permitted in this community, no exceptions.  This community should display large signs on all sides of the gates warning non-occupants about the community and threatening prosecution to all trespassers.

Since the above suggestion most likely will never happen, I strongly believe a logo should be designed and taught to all children and adults.  This logo should be easily and quickly recognized at a glance.  All sex offenders should be required by law to wear this logo openly on a hat or shirt that must be worn at all times.  In addition, this logo should be displayed on all sides of their vehicles, all openings (windows, doors) of thier houses, and a large sign erected in their yards displaying these logos.

They should be subject to searches in their homes, vehecles, and persons.  They should be informed that at any time they are caught without the logos displayed on home, vehicles and clothing they will be immediately imprisoned.

I would even go as far as requiring a tatoo of the sex offender logo displayed on their facees.  After all, they themselves admit this is a permanent addiction, they should reflect this with a permanent tatoo.

Am I being too hard?  Not by a longshot.  If it were up to me, I'd easily solve the problem with a single dose of electricity.

I wish Dr. Phil would have reminded the viewers that sex offense carries NO statute of limitation and the offender can be prosecuted for a crime he committed fifty years ago.  If I knew the people who attacked me when I was nine years old, I would have pressed charges by now.  This law was enacted so children without a voice today can speak up when they get the nerve to do so.

You would do well in China or some other Communist country. What you’re suggesting here fits well into a system like theirs. But this is America and we do have a constitution that is contrary to your beliefs. You know if all you suggest here were to be enacted, you still wouldn’t be satisfied. Maybe you were abused or have a close relative or friend who was. In that case you should go for counseling yourself like offenders should also. Your anger will only escalate further until maybe we’ll all read about you in the paper one day. I hate what these offenders do also like everyone else, but I believe we need more preventive measures in place to reduce this epidemic. Like required counseling for all offenders once they enter the system to openly discuss what they did and why. We can lock them up for a period of time to punish them without the disease being dealt with. There are strong offending spirits out there and once they latch on to someone, they don’t want to let go.

You have a hateful spirit that torments you. America has pushed God away from their lives, which leaves the door open for you know who. People want to feel good inside but without God many latch onto the next thing closest to Him - children. It’s a great thing to protect our kids but Jesus died for the offender also. I know some offenders claim to be religious but don’t really have it or live it. But there are some that are real. As you would do whatever it takes to protect your kids, God also looks out for His. These are people with souls and everyone will face judgment one day. Some people think that they can commit adultery and it’s ok with everyone. Hey after all it’s with two adults. No one cares for the other faithful spouse. In fact some look at them as being weird. You’re way out of line with your suggestions here and I’m glad not to have to be around you because often you become the company you keep.

I love Dr. Phil but...

I think he really dropped the ball on this show. As a Dr. he should know that predators fall into the catagory of sexual deviants (i.e. pedophiles, sexual sadists, etc.) and he should have done his homework on the Sex Offender Registry before presenting to the audience that everyone on the SOR is a sexual predator. Some are, some aren't. Some people are caught in a situation where immaturity and poor judgement (due to lack of experience and maturity) allowed them to make mistakes as adolescents that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. I believe that SOME RSO's deserve a break because they are not sexual predators and some should be locked up for life (or executed). I have a serious problem with a teenager being convicted of a sex crime because s/he operated within his/her PEER group i.e. high school, etc. and would openly support someone in this terrible situation. When is the last time a 14 or 15 year old girl/boy sustained serious phychological damage because his/her sex partner was 18 or 19 instead of 17 when they engaged in CONSENTUAL sex? Never. One of the biggest problems with today's youth is that they are oversexed and over exposed to sexual material. Their role models are the Paris Hiltons (made famous by her sex tape) of the entertainment industry, they lack shame or discretion and they are in desperate need of parental supervision and guidance.

I watched the 20/20 report about that poor man convicted of having sex with his girlfriend and it sickened me. Like his now wife, whom he was convicted of raping statutorily, many of these girls are NOT victims they are willing participants. Focusing on statutory rape, indecent exposure and other crimes that are not perpetrated by a true sexual predator actually robs the real victims of rape, incest and molestation of the compassion and attention they deserve. It also desensitizes the public to the serious issues with sexual predators in our country.

I'm truly disgusted that this government can't find millions of illegal immigrants, yet they can pinpoint the whereabouts of a teenage boy who had sex with his high school sweetheart.

Wake up, America.
