Don’t miss Dr. Phil’s exclusive interview with Brianna Denison's mother who is speaking out for the first time since her daughter's body was found. Nineteen-year-old Brianna made headlines when she was kidnapped while she slept on a friend's couch. Brianna's killer – an alleged serial rapist -- is still on the loose in Reno, NV. And, a controversial issue is heating up the headlines: Where should registered sex offenders live when they’re released from prison? Residents of Long Beach, California say not in their neighborhood. They’re outraged that an apartment building is allegedly housing 13 registered sex offenders, and the building owner is reportedly receiving $1,000 per month to house them. Former tenants, James and Getania, were disgusted to learn that the sex offenders were living in their building, and local residents weren’t happy either. Dawna owns several properties near the apartment complex. She says she’s losing tenants and the sex offenders are stalking others. Then, Jake Goldenflame, a registered sex offender who was convicted of molesting his daughter and young boys over 25 years ago, says he's still attracted to teenage boys, but says people like him have no resources and need to live somewhere. What does Dr. Phil think? Should the sex offenders be forced to leave the community, or should their neighbors just learn to live with them? If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is going to deal with it now! Join the discussion.

The Justice System Doesnt Provide Justice

I watched about 35 minutes of this episode and I was completely sickened not by the people who were furious about having sex offenders in their neighborhood but by the fact that A persons sex offender status makes them a  bad person to many people. Alot of people need to realize that even though a person is labeled as a sex offender doesn't mean they are one you don't know their personal story you only know what little information that is put on the persons sex offender profile case in point when I was 17 I met a gentleman who told me he was 29 I met him while I worked at a local grocery store he was a regular customer always came through my checkout line and we made small talk I ended up pursuing a relationship with him. It ended up being a sexual relationship but it was completely consensual along the line I ended up finding out he wasn't 29 he was 38 but I still kept seeing him. I ended up falling for him  and I let my mom meet him on 2 occasions so my mom was aware that her minor daughter was sleeping with a 38 year old. While with my partner we took photos of what went on in our "bedroom life" I never objected to these photos and I eventually personally took photos of my self when I was 17 and posted them on-line on a blog site I also exchanged photos of my self with him via photo messages on my cellphone. Low and behold I was reported to a missing and exploited child database because of my photos that were on-line. My house was searched by sheriffs January of 2006 six months prior to my 18th birthday. I was charged with 2 felonies and they found out about my partner and pursued charges on him also. I did not have to register as a sex offender all though it came up during my court case whether or not I should or shouldn't have to after completing a sex offender risk assessment they felt I shouldn't of had to register which I agree these were photos of my self not someone else. My partner on the other hand started out with one charge and was eventually indicted on 22 felony charges all related to pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor all charges were related to the photos he had possession of, of me. This court case really showed me that the justice system doesn't do justice, one because of the fact that they kept pursuing more charges on him not only that but they didn't keep in consideration it was all consensual. The screwed up thing about Ohio is that the legal age for consensual sex is 16 thats why they couldn't charge him with statutory rape but yet they could pursue charges on the photos because I was not 18 and its illegal to photograph a minor in a sexual act. How does think makes sense? I think sex is far worse than a photo! This case needs to be laid to rest its been over 2 years since everything started and its no where near done it took until June of 2007 one month before my 19th birthday for my partners case to finally come to an end luckily he was able to get a plea bargain where he plead guilty to 1 felony charge instead of taking the original 22 to trial. Part of his plea bargain was he had to register as a Sexually Oriented Offender for 10 years be on community control for 18 months, attend Sex Offender Classes and a no contact order was put in place that he was unable to contact me. I thought that would be the end but it hasn't been for him due to his felony conviction now the barbers board is trying trying to revoke his license so he can no longer cut hair He is currently fighting that in a civil case not only that but January of 08 they passed the Adam Walsh act reclassifying sex offenders into 3 different tiers since he is a sexually oriented offender under the Adam Walsh act that will make him a tier 2 offender meaning instead of registering 10 years and confirming residency annually he would have to register 25 years and confirm residency semi-annually how unfair is this to a person who doesn't even deserve to be classified as a sex offender everything was consensual I think that if he has to be compliant with the Adam Walsh act thats its double jeopardy because they are changing his original sentence! I will never view him as a sex offender because its something he should of never been labeled. The justice system was not out to help him like some offenders instead they were out to take everything from him. His freedom, His Insanity, His job, His life. I have not seen or heard from him since the day I had to testify on behalf of the state of Ohio in his case. I wish for the best for him and I wish people would realize every sex offenders case isn't the same and some people never even deserved to be classified a sex offender.

Informed

Quote From: psalms100

I think before people start judging others they should be more informed to know exactly what they are talking about.  A sex offender is a human being whether you want to accept that fact or not. And "sex offenders" is not even the right term to use because many of them have only offended once and yet they are called sex offenders as though they will always offend.  And as far as labeling people, why don't they have labels for drug addicts, drunk drivers, and other felons who can harm our children?  Why do we squirm at the word sex offender?  We squirm because we hear all the "bad news" about those few who are sick and who would offend again and again.  So does that mean we should treat them all the same?  I don't think so.  I think the law is so unjust when it comes to so called "sex offenders."  It is bad enough that they can't find anyplace to live, and that they have to register, but for the police to send out fliers to the community is not only wrong, but it puts the person and their families in danger. How many people have been harassed or killed because they find out a "sex offender" has moved near them?  Maybe you don't even care and think it serves them right.  But you do not even know them or the story behind their arrest in the first place.

I have children and grandchildren and my heart goes out to those who have gone through some horrible experience because of a sex offender.  But they are not all the same.  And many are never given a second chance.  They have to die with that label.  And no matter what their story is- behind all the hysteria- some have been punished more than anyone should ever be punished.  Some have never seen their grandchildren because the law prohibits any contact whatsoever with children and this is for all sex offenders, whether they are pedophiles, whether they offended once, whether it was a 19 year old that was turned in by a 17 year's old mom, or whether they were drunk and urinating and someone saw them and turned them in.  There are way too many reasons why people are labeled sex offenders and to treat them all the same is totally unjustifiable.

And do you really feel comfortable knowing where they all live?  Can't this give people a false sense of security?  Sex offenders of all sorts are walking around every day.  They may be someone in line in front of you at the bank.  They could be someone you had a nice chat with at the grocery store yesterday.  They could be someone cleaning your carpets. They could be anyone you come in contact with on a daily basis.  So what now? Do we register where they  work or what they do for a living? Wake up, people!  We have normal everyday people who can have a clean record and all of a sudden may wind up killing, raping, or molesting someone.  What parents and the community needs to do is take care of their children and do the best they can to keep them away from all danger.  We will never have a perfect world.  We are all sinners.  That is how it will always be.  We cannot go on picking on one class of felons and make them our main focus.  I wish the world was safer for our children, but it is not. We  will always have drunk drivers, killers, rapist, burglars, drug dealers, and all kinds of law breakers no matter what we do.  I just wish people knew more about sex offenders before they classified all of them as being evil or being sociopaths.  I feel sorry for those who can't see what they are doing as being totally wrong.  And I feel sorry for those who are so ready to cast the first stone.  I sure wish Dr. Phil would have talked to me for this show.

When a parent or community member is made aware that there is a sex offender in their area, yes most likely thier first reaction is going to be that it is a individual that rapes children. the reason being is that children are more likley to be targets of honredous sex crimes simply due to that fact that they are children.

Most individuals have an inate empathy and need to protect children, and therefore when they hear sex offender they are going to first look to the saftey of the children, and this may lead to the assumption that the sex offender is a predator that preys on children.,

Unfortunaly hearing the bad new's about those "few" that are sick, is inacurate, individuals that prey on the young are numerous in number, and second chances are a mute point, simply because it is simply giving them the opportunity to torture, mutilate and irevocably destroy a childs mind, body and soul.

what is the difference between dying with the label "Sex offender" or the label "victim"?

Both are making a statement and both are tragic and sad, however, both are realities.

I do not think people are generating "Hysteria" they simply have a genuine and legitimate concern with how sex offenders are wreaking devastation and pain, and it has taken so long to get accountability from the offenders and recognition and atonment for the victims.. we have a long way to go, in that regard.

I do not think that if a parent of someone that is concerned with the welfare and saftey of children is going to have a false sense of security if they know there is a sex offender living near them, in fact i think their vigilance would be that much higher...

False sense of security is whistling in the dark pretending or ignoring the dangers, not recognizing it and facing it head on.

I am not sure i follow what your reasoning is by saying normal every day people can wind up killing, raping or molesting some one... it is not how some one behaves one day that is going to determine how they are treated for the rest of their lives, it is how they conduct themselves every day that will determine how they are treated each day. I may respect and look up to someone that has done much good, however if they raped or molested or murdered someone hwo could one ask me to continue to respect that person? I don't understand what you are trying to say.

Saying we all sin is interesting in this context, I think what you are saying is it is our nature to comite horendeous abuses towards childkind, womankind, Mankind? I am sorry i do not agree with this, God writ the commandments on the fleshy tablets of our mind, meaning he gave us a concience, I can not see how one could reconcile their concience with the horendeous crime of rape and molestation.

commiting crimes of this nature has nothing to do with sin at all, it has to do with choice. the choice to blatantly and willingly destroy another human being for the selfish satisfaction of self.

That is not a sin, that is a blatant disregard for human life, sin is forgivable, however there are some actions that are not forgivable.

Cain was marked for life for the destruction of his brothers life, just like Cain sex offendors are marked for life, Cain was not forgiven he was simply given the opportunity to spend the rest of his life in atonment for what he had done, for all the world to see.

I think people are waking up, and some people are wishing they would go back to sleep ... simply becasue they are having a difficult time reconcilling themselves to the fact that some people refuse to sugar coat or be sympathetic to individuals that do so much harm and cause so much pain.

Do i think that sex offenders should be clear about what kind of sex offendor they are yes I do.. however, i think the reason they are not clear about whether they are a rapist, child molestor, or some one who hired a adult prostitue or took a pee on the corner, is to try to protect these sex offendors from vigilatiaism.

So I guess by advocating for clarity about types of sex offendors, you are in a round about way putting them in more jepordy, nto regersting them is not going to happen, the police and governments can not keep track of all the offendors, so they have made it so people can have the information and tools to take percautions for them selves.

highly emotionaly charged topic, so glad it was shared, it is good to see people talking about this issue, and sharing their opinions and beliefs, These were a few of mine, that although differing somewhat in yours, it was your post that got me really thining about this, and for that I thank you .

I don't believe in apologizing for speaking my mind, why should I?  Because I hurt your feelings?  Did I OFFEND you?  Please.  I have a right to apply a perfectly apt label to what they are!  I have a right to what I think, feel, and believe, and I should not have to rescind that based on you having your feelings hurt.  This is a message board, you should be used to it by now...

you storyis sad but it is not every case

Quote From: prichard5

Do you know that in Illinois juvenile sex offenders have to register but the information is not available to the public?  I know this because my daughter a senior in high school was dating this fellow that had graduated from another area high school the year before.  Recently we just had a regulation passed here in Robinson saying that if you wanted to bring a date that did not go to your school to the prom you had to fill out paperwork and give a copy of that persons id.  Well my daughter had already been dating this guy for 4 months.  And surprise, surprise the school calls me and says your daughters boyfriend cannot attend the dance with her because he is a registered juvenile sex offender.  Well I live in a small community and it did not take much to find out the particulars on this offender.  The only thing I found out is it happened when he was 14 and it was with a 10 year old boy.  I have a 10 year old boy I would have liked to known before I let this man into my house.

And it gets even better a few years ago my stepbrother who lives in Indiana molested my nieces who at the time the youngest was 5 years old.  They sent him away for a couple of years to live in a group home with counseling and then he got to move back in with my dad and stepmom (who live in a retirement community) and he did not have to register and do you know when these sex offenders turn 18 it goes off their record.

The young man my daughter was dating also was a noncompliant sex offender because he moved to a different state and when he moved back did not reregister and they didn't catch him until he was an adult and he still only has to reregister for 7 more years,.  So there isn't even any probation violation recourse for such things.  I will tell you only our voices will change these laws I have been writing to senators and governors anybody I can get to listen and call them they get sick of hearing from you and they might finally do something about this.

I am not saying they cannot be rehabilitated but studies show that 85% of the time these offenders will do it again.  Its attrocious that we as a country care more about protecting illegal aliens rights than our own children.  Thank you concerned in illinois

Your story while sad and unfair is not the case with all offenders. There are men who were dating girls and the parents were fine with it then there is a break-up and it is not ok any more. I think the SOR is a great thing for people but think it should be more focused and not everyone form mooners to molesters are on it. It should be for the offenders that have young victims or it was by force and types like that....not for the "young loves" where both offender and "Victim" are teens in the same school and are consenting. I do think a 19 and a 15 year old are about as poorly equipped as the other when it comes to decisions of the heart and body at that age. I know I was very poorly prepared to make quality adult decisions in many areas at that time

He was in possesion of child pornography which is a crime, irregardless of whether you took the pictures your self or not the fact is that he was in possesion of them.

Why in the world would this man lie to you about his age?

Sending pictures or putting images of yourself on line in compromising acts is foolish, once any thing is on line it is no longer your property, it in essence becomes public property.

The justice system did what they did whith in the lines of the law that they have implemented, they make no distinction between whether the pictures were of a seven year old or a seventeen year old, the bottom line is that it was child pornography.

As an adult with many years of living, he should have known that child pornography is illegal, he got caught and has to pay a hefty price, but the botom line is by having those photos in his possesion he was commitng a crime. Having child pornography in your possesion is a sexual crime so therefore the label sex offender fits, I am sorry if this is not what you want to hear, but it is the truth.

Your story is a good one for young people to hear! It teaches a very valuable lesson about child pornography, and what not to do and what tobe aware of.

I really do hope that you share this with other young people and also let them know that posting graphic pictures of themselves on the internet or via cell phone has very real dangers. you also stated that all 22 charges were realated to the child pornography in his possesion, sadly this individual did not have the foresite or maturity to not accept child pornography and went so far as to intice you to participate in it! Shame on him!

Quote From: getrealtime

I started reading your post, and you make no sence. you say your husband only offended once, so why does he have to reg. as a sex offender. you say, sex offender is not even the right word because he only offended once, heres the key word( offended ) he offended someone( sexually ) put the two toghther you get ( Sex Offender )

I'm still laughing at your next statement ( why don't we label drug addict, drunk drivers, felons )

We do we call them ( drug addict, drunk driver, and felons ) lol lol lol lol lol.................................

still laughing hold on lollol lol lol lol...................................................................................................................

and as for you saying sex offenders are    human beings,   did they act humane when they sexually offended. no. so if they act without consideration or compassion or sympathy, for others, why should they expect  us to treat them any different, then they treated their victim?

I feel that you do not understand my post because you read what you want to read into it.  But laugh all you want.  I will leave God in charge to judge even people like you who do not quite understand anything about the law or about what true compassion is.  If you think that the world will be safer locking up all sex offenders then you have a right to think what you want.  I knows what this world is coming to and if you read the bible you would know also.  So I am not going to get into any battle about this subject or any other subject because in all reality, it is useless.  Just like it is useless to make non-Christians understand the word of God because they have no idea what the bible, God's word, says.  They think they can say what little they do know and come out looking as though the got it figured out.  Well, all I can say is that I am praying for you and everyone who feels the way you do. God bless the USA!!! May God help us all.

Sex Offenders Next Door

Quote From: sundeigo

Put them all on Alcatraz Island  with a shark tank in ocean like SeaWorld barbed wire extending 2 miles out surrounding the Island and let them have at it. The laws are in need of a overhaul. They get out in 2 years or less.  DO FOOD DROPS ! ! ! !  MILITARY STYLE ! ! ! PERKS THEY ARE ALL SEX OFFENDERS, LET THEM OFFEND EACH OTHER. ! ! !
I have often thought of putting them on an island also which would be similiar to a city where they would have to raise and harvest their own food.  I'm talking about growing everything,  vegetables, livestock and everything associated with planting and taking care of it.  You know there are all kinds of people who make up the sexual offenders which would fit in to the realm of things in this city.  Doctors, vet's, and everybody else it takes to run a city.  I know there is an island somewhere this could be done. Make them work for their own keep.

how do you know

Quote From: philshowlogon

I agree with you. I'm sorry for your past abuses and what you must be going through. I hope this helps. My wife was molested by her father. One day she confronted him with this issue and he deeply apologized for what he did and my wife forgave him. This brought inner freedom to both. He hasn't molested since and my wife sleeps a lot better now. It was a hard thing  for her to do, but she also was bound by the abuse for years like so many victims are and wanted to be free of it.  There's so many out there that want to see great punishment come to him and I somewhat agree being she's my wife and I've hurt with her for years. I admire her and love her so much for who she is and what she did and our relationship is better now. Take care.

It took your wife years to confront her father, how do you know that there isn't more victims out there?

There is no way you can, women hided it for years, or for their hole lifes.

I've read your newest post too, where you say that if the parents teach their children,.  there would be less bad people.   There is something wrong with you, if you say if the child new better, then  adult can't do the act. Most people hole the adult accountable for their action, not the child.

I did read  all of your post, and I was just tring to stay away from judging your christian beliefs( as I like to call it the Chester molelesterand and the ones who defend them house of god ) but sence you brought my beliefs into it, yours is fair game.

"Suffer the children unto me" not suffer the children unto your love ones

a man who would touch a child, is not a man, he is the beast, and the person who follows the beast  will cry out for them, and hide them from being jugded, by throwing out gods word, to jusify why the beast should walk among us without his mark.

sex offender reg. is the mark of the beast, so our innocent children can see him for what he is.

so you can preach all you like, but I know  being a christian is: protecting the ones that can not protect themselfs, and not to hide the face of the beast behided the book of God.

God may have forgiven them, but I dout that he would want us hide them from their sins, they should where it, for they can

not forget the sin, and commit it again .

To forgive does not come with forget,  You like to use forgivness of the lord, as a way to protect the one you love,  as to forgive your love one for what he did, is the same as to forget.

As a christian I will not forget that evil walks among us
