How would you feel if an airline banned you for how you looked? According to two young women, they’ve been banned for life from flying Southwest Airlines. Sarah and Nisreen made national news when they were escorted off a plane because they say the airline had a problem with them because they were “young and decent-looking” and their flight attendants were “middle-aged.” Southwest denies treating the women unfairly because of their appearance and says the women used vulgar language, obscene gestures and aggressive behavior. Joining the conversation is Kyla, who says she was told by Southwest that her outfit was too skimpy, and two other passengers who say the airline booted them because they were women. Then, McKay is a 15-year-old on a mission to end cussing. He founded a No Cussing Club at his high school and wants to inspire others to stop swearing and examine the power of words. McKay’s campaign has even motivated his mayor to pass a proclamation for a No Cussing Week in his hometown. Don’t miss reactions from the teen’s family and classmates! If it’s happening now, Dr. Phil is going to deal with it now! Join the discussion.

03/14 Dr. Phil Now: Fly Girls

Quote From: clarpa

I also want to add, that when I was younger, I was quite pretty, and was probably treated better than other passengers, not because I was pretty, but because I WAS POLITE AND KIND TO THE ATTENDANTS, who have a very tough job. I never in my many years of flying, had a bad experience with a flight attendant, and I looked alot better than any of the girls on the show - but I was alot nicer!
I'm a young attractive female (not to brag) and I learned early on that being NICE in addition to being attractive works for almost any situation. Its kind of a shame that I know I can use my looks to get my way but at the same time its just how the human brain works. They've done studies that show that people as a whole react differently to attractive people. Besides, there are some parts of my life where things are not so easy, so I don't feel so bad when I'm treated differently because of my looks and because I'm nice.

Regardless of appearance, everyone should try to be kind to others.

women and men

Quote From: sitheil

I believe in polite behavior in any situation and I also believe in good respectful service.  I don't  have enough information to decide who was at fault here.  I certainly understand that  an airline executive isn't likely to say the airlines'  employees were at fault, particularly if a lawsuit is being launched against that airline.  I was surprised to hear this quote from the email as representative of the girls statement about themselves.  I think they said "Southwest discriminates against young, pretty girls".  In no way does that statement include themselves though it may be implied.

The questions Dr. Phil asked the girls were very aggressive, rather attacking while the way he spoke to Tom at Southwest, was respectful and friendly as if he were a friend.  It's not fair to use Dr. Phil's experience with the airline as a contrast given his public persona I expect he'd get pretty good treatment on any airline.

I've been using airlines for almost 50 years and I've never had problems on any airline but from time to time I have observed that the women attendants on some airlines give more attention to men than they do to women. It was never important enough to me to raise the issue with the airlines but maybe I should have.   If one wants to know why they do it,  I'd ask the attendants why they do it, as they are the ones who would know.  Perhaps they don't realize they're doing it.  Perhaps they need to be made aware of it.

I think it is human nature for women to pay more attention to men and vice versa; especially if they are yound and single. The older married attendants seem to be more balanced in their attention. As far as not saying anything - how are the airlines going to change if no one tells them what is wrong?

Are you girls for real?

What the hell?  Are you girls for real with wasting your time and energy on such a pointless, meaningless, self-centered event when there is soooooo MUCH more going on in OUR world today that ACTUALLY means more to focus such energies?  Come on!  Get a grip.  In fact, get a job!  Get a hobby. I'd say get a pet to teach you to calm down but I wouldn't want to sentence any animal of any kind to such selfish immature beings as your selves.  Ya!  I'm angry.  I'm angry and really tried hard to let this one roll off my back but couldn't.  After what my children and I were put through and how much the world changed for us and as bad and traumatic as it was, we had no recourse for justice.  I'm mad at you for being so petty.  I'm mad at the media for wasting footage on your "problems" for something that doesn't change your life in a "life-altering manner" and at this point, only because of your pathetic cries for 'justice' have this turned on you and will this memory stay with you.  You embarrassed yourselves on the plane and I am sorry for your parents who have to walk in public and deal with whispers and laughs behind their backs.  You have NO idea what embarrassment and trauma is and when you look back on all this only then will you realize your mistakes in your actions.

As for the media that picked up on all this "crap", ya, I swore!  There is sooo much more happening to innocent, defensless people/families who could use the media's attention to matters that SHOULD get national attention.  Is the news that lacking that you think this is a story worth telling?

Dr. Phil, I don't refer to you in this media...... I'm just partial and biased to you.  I love your show!

03/14 Dr. Phil Now: Fly Girls

Ok I just wanted the show and felt I had to comment, since these girls don’t seem to be getting any much-needed support in a situation where it is clear that they were treated unfairly.

What happened to them on their flight was terrible, and I don't think Dr. Phil focused as much on that as he did their motivation for being there. They were trying to bring attention to their issue, not their looks. Whether or not they believe their appearance is the reason for what happened to them is irrelevant, because it doesn’t change the fact that Southwest was WAY out of line with how they dealt with the situation. The treatment they received was unacceptable regardless of their disposition, age, or appearance.

It was interesting to see Kyla on the show suggesting they were only in it for the media attention, especially after she had recently completed a photo shoot for Playboy courtesy of her new found fame.

And why are there so many posts on this subject referencing the way teenagers/young women dress? That had nothing to do with any of the girls’ complaints on this show. And they all appeared to be dressed very nicely…why even comment about it.

As for Southwest, the consumer horror stories about them seem to be endless…I’d be scared to ever fly with them.

You said it so much better than I did!!  I agree with you.

Dr. Phil was right on, because he saw the girls for what they were.  I don't understand how you CAN'T see they were rude in spirit. When you are rude, you get rude in return, and it doesn't matter if you are pretty, ugly or in-between. It is wrong to swear on a plane and cause a commotion because you are not "happy". After 9-11, everything on a plane is taken seriously, and if you are too immature to realize that, then stay home. I'm guessing you are young. Tape the show and replay it in ten years and I bet you change your mind.

Not to worry, girls like that will age...and then they'll be ugly AND vacuous!  When that day comes, LMAO!!!

Seriously, they don't have brains, charm, a good personality, a heart, or any skills to offer the world (except being able to live from settlement to settlement off corporations that "treat them badly", talk about being a parasite).

I agree, it's all about not getting to be the obnoxious waste of space that they are.

Honestly, I am glad I am ugly. I think it forced me to have depth of personality and to gain intelligence.

Southwest Experience

I've flown several times on Southwest Airlines and they are extremely nice, going out of their way to make the flight a pleasant experience.

Freedom of speech is one thing!

Quote From: rainpainrain

I am for freedom of speech, but an airline can ban what ever it wants from it's jets.  More power to them. Free enterprise and all that jazz.
But swearing in public is a whole other ball of wax. It is inappropriate, rude, crude, and makes you look like low class trash. When I am angry I am able to get my point across without having to swear. As a matter of fact, I get much further by speaking in a firm but intelligent manner. These kind of people need to get some manners and grow up. I believe in freedom of speech but I don't think this is what our founding fathers had in mind.

Quote From: iamxrep

Enough already with these whiny little brats. I can't believe that Dr. Phil is actually bringing that snippy Kyla back on his show especially after the way she acted the last time she was on his show. And didn't she say that if she got an apology from Southwest that she would NEVER appear on another talk show?? And Dr. Phil is bringing her back on? To do what? Whine some more about how badly she was treated? Like I said before.......ENOUGH ALREADY!!  Bring on some people that actually have real problems. Girls, get a life why don't you?????
OMG.... yes, I sooo agree with you!

Cussing

As a teacher, I do not understand why there would be ANY cussing taking place in a school. "The teachers don't mind as long as it's not said to them or another student"?????? Have I missed something??? Curse words are not just used to vent frustration or anger , as implied by the young man and Dr. Phil. They are used as adjectives, adverbs and verbs as well as for showing joy, sorrow , and pain. I know their use is widespread among the 40 and below age group but I have never been able to understand the attraction. Whenever I hear the "language" being used in conversation, I lose a lot of respect for the person using it. I guess I'm just old-fashioned.
