(Original Air Date: 04/03/08) Every parent believes his or her child is special – the best athlete, the best behaved or the most beautiful -- but for some moms, the pursuit of having the perfect child can turn into an obsession. Sonya says her 18-year-old daughter, Annie, was born perfect. The mom even went so far as to have her tubes tied right after giving birth so she could devote all her time to molding the perfect child! She started entering Annie in beauty pageants when she was 6 months old, and when the girl was 4, she made her watch reality medical shows so she would grow up to be a doctor. Annie regrets not having a normal childhood, and says she hated being pressured to succeed at such a young age. What’s behind Sonya’s obsession with perfection? Then, Cathy says she wants her 13-year-old daughter, Lexie, and her 18-year-old son, Nick, to be the best. Lexie says her mom hassles her about her weight and made her work out an hour a day at age 6! Nick says his mother drives his coaches crazy at sporting events by screaming and critiquing his game. Cathy says she’ll continue to badger and push her kids because she believes they’ll benefit in the long run. But will her controlling ways push her kids away? Share your views here.

Find out what happened on the show.

04/03 Perfectionist Moms

This mom really is sick, and I think we are only seeing the tip pf the iceberg on this show. Dr. Phil nailed it when he said children like this go wild when they actually do get out of the grips of the controlling parent. Sonya is really out of control and I believe she is doing more harm than anything. It makes my stomach cringe when I watch her!!! I feel terrible for Annie and what she has missed out in her childhood.

I had a wonderful yet not perfect childhood. I turned out just fine. My mom was right in the middle. Not too controlling not too easy going. I am 24 years old getting my masters. I am a teacher, very successful. I live with my boyfriend now in a two family home. Never ended up pregnant at 16. Never ended up in trouble, all because my mom taught me the right things and allowed (trusted) me to make the right choices.

I feel terrible for Annie. I hope that she gets to at least enjoy college without her overbearing mom at her side. I hope Annie is okay when on her own in college. I know this will be difficult to her. Goodness am I nervous for her.

This writer is right--we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg! Can you imagine how Sonja will react when Annie decides to marry?  Annie is growing up to be a wonderful young woman and I am sure will meet someone who will love her unconditionally, but the prospect of having Sonja as a mother-in-law could be a deal breaker.

I also wonder where Annie's father is--or was he just the sperm donor for the "perfect" child?  And while we're on the subject of perfectionism or the lack thereof--what is up with Sonja's top lip???  It doesn't move when she talks.  Is she perhaps another tragic victim of some plastic surgeon?  or is that just her "stiff upper lip???"

Children have to learn

I encourage my children to be the best they can. I have told them how important college is. I, however, back  off at that point. If they never try and fail they never learn how to deal with it. I would rather they make their mistakes now rather than later.

Kids have to have time to be kids.

Good Luck

Selfish and Self serving parents// form of abuse

Does this make you angry? of course it does...so your daughter meets a guy and he starts controlling
her...tells her shes not doing things right....pretty soon cuts off the family....always telling her what to do and how to do it...she doesnt recognize its WRONG because she grew up with YOU her mom doing the SAME ...then he starts hitting her....she tries to leave....but you have brought her up to be perfect so she cant leave because you would be disappointed....think about it lady....you have set your daughter up big time...why cannot she make her own decisions and learn some self worth.....also I have a question about your appearance-what exactly is the reason for the frozen face....it looks weird...of course you had to take away from your daughter and make it all about you one way or another....sorry if this sounds mean but you dont seem to care about anything so why  not let you have it ....

The mother has obviously had some botox. She couldnt perfect herself, so why not work on the daughter. The daughter's hairdo wasnt fitting for a 16 year old, I'm sure mommy dearest chose that too.Sheesh, some people...

Several Comments

 On the first mother:

#1:  where in the HE(double hockeysticks) is the Dad?  I would bet my whole paycheck that he dumped Mom a long time ago because HE couldn't stand what she was doing either.

#2:  If she thinks for a half second that her daughter becoming a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader is going to lead to her marrying Tony Romo then Mom is SERIOUSLY delusional.  The cheerleaders are NOT allowed to socialize with the players first of all and second of all while her daughter is a beautiful intelligent young lady, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but she is no rival for Jessica Simpson.  Unless Mom has the power to line up all the planets to make that happen then it ain't.  Not to mention over 900 women try out for the DCC every year, if Mom has never let her think and answer for herself she WON'T survive the interview portion if she makes the first cut.  Is she planning on auditioning and doing the interview for her too?

Thank goodness the kids of the second mother have the strength to tell her to pack sand.

I only hope that all of these kids make the break from these mothers for their own sanity.  Neither of them realize that by their actions they are driving the kids away not pulling them closer.

Don't Listen to these People!

You people that keep telling the women on this show that they are pushing their kids to be perfect are trying to spin the show the fit your issue. These Mom's are trying to do and be the best for their kids. I sense more of insecurity by the posters on this message board about than anything else. Look at your own self, are you overweight, unsuccessful, unhappy?! You probably are. Leave these women alone. I agree that there are parents with mediocre values, who raise children with mediocre standards. I live in an area where I can even find close to my equal or my kids equal, in anything. I am not boasting..I am complaining about the complacency of parents these days. Stop complaining about other parents who do their best so you can feel content with your laziness.

not a perfectionist mom

my mom was far from a perfectionist mom. Which was good for me because i dont learn unless i do it for my self.  But it would have been nice to have a perfectionist mom/dad, for the per fact that i was a addict all threw high school and for 3 years after i graduated.  I was put in jail and then attended 3 different rehabs. In a out patient rehabs.  I love where i am at in life now. And looking back on my life i had a great life and did alot. but i think parents should should be some what of a perfectionist when it comes to the more importent things, and just let a kid live his life, because they probly not take the parents word for it.
