(Original Air Date: 04/08/08) Imagine having your doctor on speed dial to answer your questions 24/7. Here's your chance, because The Doctors (link to: /shows/page/TheDoctors)  are back! Dr. Phil welcomes OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson, family therapist Dr. Tara Fields, pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears, plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon, and E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork. Join their conversation and hear their valuable insights on the hottest medical topics of the day, including actor Heath Ledger's untimely death and the rise in breast augmentation surgery. Next, meet Jennifer, a wife and mother who's so afraid of her family getting sick and dying from germs, that she won't handle cash or mail, she wears three different pairs of shoes each day -- a pair for in the house, one for out of the house, and one for in the car -- and won't even greet family members from out of town until they've come in and showered! Is Jennifer's house as germ free as she thinks it is? Dr. Phil sends a microbiologist to find out. Then, meet a woman who got married and was ready to start a family only to find out that the man she fell in love with was making her physically ill. And, meet a couple who are at odds over a serious medical dilemma involving their 3-year-old son. Should they amputate his legs? Plus, is there a medical question you're dying to know the answer to but are too embarrassed to ask? Be there when The Doctors answer viewer questions on topics ranging from breastfeeding to penis enlargement, and then talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

REGRETS for reconstruction

Quote From: jgenette

I am a 33 year old woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. I am a little upset with the way that implants were talked about  today. I understand that alot of women are getting implants for cosmetic reasons but some of us do not have the choice it is implants or nothing. I just think that this should be at least mentioned. I can not  believe that not one of these doctors would think to mention it. I hate the thought of implants but there are not many other options. I had a deip tissue surgery and one side didnt work so I am going to eventually have to have an implant. It is a very hard decision and I had a overwellming anger listning to all the doctors talking  and not mentioning the sadness involved in a diagnosis of cancer and the choice of mastectomy or implant!!!!!
Think three times and do massive research.  I had bi-lateral mastectomy.....the reconstrution took five months, hurt 100 times more than the original surgery, can no longer sleep on my stomach, these hockey pucks are hard.....hugs are out of the question unless you want your secret out.  I would not make that same decision . Best wishes on your cancer......I am almost three years in the clear.

It does not matter what others think! You are in charge of your own body and should make your own decisions about it.

You are young, and how you feel about your body is important. Implants have come a long way......just be sure you choose a board certified physician who has a lot of experience in this type of surgery. Investigate him or her thoroughly.

Good luck!

NEED a LUMPER DOCTOR

Quote From: dlongga

I am in the wellness field and I am deeply concerned that Drs. have lost their way. It seems like no matter what the ailment or complaint is, it is solved with a prescription. Are the drs really in bed with the BIG PHARMA companies? Why are drs. not willing to determine the root of the problem rather than just slapping a band aid on it??

I teach wellness, good diet, and exercise and work for a wonderful chiropractor who explains nerve interference in relationship to symptoms in the body. We see miracles in our office every single day and we try to educate our patients to be IN CONTROL, not allow ANYONE to play god with their decisions. An educated patient is a healthy patient most of the time!

We hear this more often than you know, that a dr. has told them there is NO OTHER alternative but medication or surgery. And sadly they believe that until they come to our office as a last resort.

Doctors today "treat" (read prescribe) only one symptom instead of looking at the whole spectrum of symptoms. Finding a lumper who studies the whole picture is best but  finding one is next to impossible.......they want you in, then OUT of their offices.

4 Jaya's Parents

As I watched today's show, I just had to sign into Dr. Phil's discussion board while I listened to little Jaya's parents discuss whether or not to ampulate his paralyzed legs.  With all do respect to the family, I have to say I think you should consider not going through with the surgery.  As I watched Jaya play and move through the house, I could only think about myself when I was younger.  I have a paralyzed arm and this was something my parents once had to consider.  I'm 25 years old and have lived with this "disability" for 22 years.  This is what has made me who I am today.  I learned to adapt to all situations and have always had the confidence to do things my own way.  I saw this in Jaya when I watched the video of him playing.  He does well with what he has, why take that away from him?  Yeah things won't always be easy, but that's what will make Jaya a stronger person as he gets older.

my cousin had the same leg problems

I seen the kid with the leg problem and It was the same as my cousin.  My uncle did not let them cut into his legs until absulutely neccessary. he drve tractors and 3 wheelers held a job as a casino dealer complete 2 years of college.  He now has no legs and he is probably 35 years old. but he has had a good life .  the parents need to modify things for him so he does not hurt himself and so he function as normal as possible and look as normal as possible. forget the surgery until it is needed.

I was kind of surprised that Dr. Phil didn't pick up on the impression that the mother wanted the surgery regardless of the experts advise.  The impression I got was the surgery was more about the mother than the childs welfare.  She made the comment about how difficult it was for her to care for her child...I'm not saying that she is a bad person but that I think her determination is more based on her life.
I had the exact same impression.. I think the mother should take the experts advice.. There is no hurry right now.. Good for the husband standing up for his son who is too young to have a voice on the situation.

Third World country

Quote From: amariern

The movie is actually the 1953 version of War of the Worlds.  Though I agree with your final statement. Check out what they say in wiki about it:

I lived in a third world country for 13 years being exposed to everything imaginable.  After returning to the USA, I have never been sick again.....................must have weathered enough to strengthen my immune system.

I am just wondering where the xxxx people get the notion breast feeding and intelligence would possibly have anything to do with intelligence.  This is so ridiculous!

I wonder on what kind of "evidence" they're basing this notion. Anecdotal "evidence" from which conflicting assumptions could be formed . Or, a body of solid evidence based on extensive research. Anyway, not all children are breast-fed. Because not all mothers can breast-feed. Nor, should they. If they're drinking alcohol, abusing drugs, or on certain medications. Babies can ingest these through breast milk. Anyway, I'm the youngest of three. Got two older brothers. My mother tried to breast-feed the oldest, but couldn't produce enough milk. So, she bottle-fed all three of us. And, our intellect hasn't suffered any.

Please tell me you aren't serious! Breastfed babies are SOO much healthier and thrive more than formula fed babies, not to mention they are mcuh earlier in development. My granddaughter just turned 5 mo old, she rolls over, she sleeps all nite (and has since she was 3 weeks old)...she is a very happy baby. She watches your mouth when you speak to her or make sounds and she imitates the sounds and has done that for 3 months. She is currently trying to say "MAMA" ...she also is the most content serene child I have ever seen. And she is never sick, her immune system is very strong.

The reason this topic bugs me personally so much is because it always seems the women who did and COULD breastfeed want to some how make themselves out to be better mothers. I couldn't breastfeed. I tried and tried but under my particular circumstances there was no way my body was ever going to produce milk.

While I haven't read studies about breast milk vs formula I have no doubt that they are indeed true. However, it doesn't make breast milk mothers better. It means they made a choice...or it means they had the amazing opportunity to make a choice. It seems like a chance for them to show off rather than be happy they GOT to breastfeed.

BTW. My daughter was born 2 months early. She was fed on formula. She was and always has been surprisingly healthy considering the fact that she was born with a compromised immune system. These things are not 100% fail safe. I've seen breastfed babies that are sick ALL the time. I've seen formula fed babies that are healthy as horses.

So, you have no proof that breast milk was/is the reason for your granddaughters amazing health.

weight gain

I gained 23 pounds in the last 2 months even though I'm eating better, eating less and moving more, I also have noticed a "dent" in my right lower leg and my upper left thigh...do you think they could be related?  Weight gain and dents?  I am scheduled for test on August 4, 2008 but would like any input you may have.
