(Original Air Date: 04/08/08) Imagine having your doctor on speed dial to answer your questions 24/7. Here's your chance, because The Doctors (link to: /shows/page/TheDoctors)  are back! Dr. Phil welcomes OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson, family therapist Dr. Tara Fields, pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears, plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon, and E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork. Join their conversation and hear their valuable insights on the hottest medical topics of the day, including actor Heath Ledger's untimely death and the rise in breast augmentation surgery. Next, meet Jennifer, a wife and mother who's so afraid of her family getting sick and dying from germs, that she won't handle cash or mail, she wears three different pairs of shoes each day -- a pair for in the house, one for out of the house, and one for in the car -- and won't even greet family members from out of town until they've come in and showered! Is Jennifer's house as germ free as she thinks it is? Dr. Phil sends a microbiologist to find out. Then, meet a woman who got married and was ready to start a family only to find out that the man she fell in love with was making her physically ill. And, meet a couple who are at odds over a serious medical dilemma involving their 3-year-old son. Should they amputate his legs? Plus, is there a medical question you're dying to know the answer to but are too embarrassed to ask? Be there when The Doctors answer viewer questions on topics ranging from breastfeeding to penis enlargement, and then talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

allergy to Temp.Change?

Hi in the past few years I have developed an allergy to sudden body temperature change. If it rains i get welts where the rain drops touch me, in a grocery store I have to stay away from any refridgerated areas, if I carry anything cold I get a welt. My face totally deforms in the wind I look like a monster, my face turns purple my face totally shifts.I cant go swimming because when I get out its to cold. Apparently its called severe cold induced urticaria. What can I do to get rid of this? What is the reason for it suddenly appearing?the welts get so hard and hot it can take awhile for them to go away....

Jaya

Regarding little Jaya - I have a cousin currently in his 30s who was born paralyzed from the waist down.  My aunt and uncle were offered the option of amputating his legs, and they decided against it with the thinking that he might have resented it later.  The decision was inevitably left up to him who didn't want it done.  Even though his legs were "dead weight", they were his legs, and they were a part of him.  The mom in this case has a point that there is a lot of stress dealing with this situation even with simply transporting him.  However, he seems to get around just fine, and he will be more agile as he gets older, lifting some of this strain from mom. My cousin also used his hands/arms to transport himself at times; it just wasn't an issues for anybody.  There will obviously always be stresses with this situation, so I don't think stress is a valid reason to pursue this.  Please, please do not amputate his legs.  I fear this would emotionally traumatize him, and I think that his overall quality of life will not improve from the amputation.  That's not to say there aren't obstacles that Jaya must face with the non-functioning legs, but I don't see how the "benefits" of amputation outweigh letting him keep his legs.

Breast has nothing whatsoever to do with the intelligence of a child.  I never breast fed my children, and both have above average intetlligence.  My grandsons are both in special classes due to above average intelligence.  Neither of them were breast fed.  I have a granddaughter who was not breast fed and is above average.  I was not breast fed and have above average intelligence.  A friend of mine did not breast feed her daughter, who has average intelligence.  Intelligence comes from genetics, not whether or not a baby is breast fed!

Yeah...I have no doubt that breastfeeding is the best choice, but I'd like to see the studies that state that breastfed kids are more INTELLIGENT...that sounds bogus to me. There are way too many factors other than booby juice.

What a sweet little boy! He is really adorable.  You know, I got the impression that the Mom was stuck on being right. It is possible to be medically 'correct' but at what price? I think what's best for him emotionally should weigh heavy too.IF its not life-threatening to keep his legs, I can't begin to understand why the mom would want to  proceed. There may be reasons that are not obvious to think about amputation. If not,I really hope that the Mom rethinks her opinion.

Excatly what I was thinking, she wanted too be "right" atleast that is the feeling she gave off........  if his legs are not life threating too him?? why would you get rid of them? like the good dr. said, it's not something that is replaceable when it's done it's done! really I hope she thinks long term on this one, what happens when he's older??  my heart skipped a beat when I saw this story.........  I pray she rethinks this serisouly, I wish Dr. had spent more time with this couple!

Breast Feeding

On todays show one of the doctors reported babies who are breast fed are more intelligent than those who are not.  My mother could not breast feed my sister, brother, and me.  Both my sister and I have a Masters degrees (hers in elementary education and mine in human resource management) and my brother has a Doctorate in mathematics.  We are also all very healthy.  I believe that breast feeding is a personal or medical decision.  Deciding not to does not necessarily mean your children will be unhealthy or intellectually inferior.

Hello Doctors,

I have had genital herpies for many years now and have tried all of the drugs on the market to help me with my outbrakes to no avail. I have an outbreak at least twice a month and they last four to five days. I have talked to my doctor about maybe seeing a doctor that specializes in the immunities field. My doctor said I just have to learn to deal with my outbreaks. I think about suicide offten because some of my outbreaks are so bad. Can you give me any advice on what to do at this point please?

If your insurance doesn't require a precert to see a specialist go anyway!  Don't wait for your physician to give you "permission."  The other thing you can do is get a second opinion from another ob/gyn and then get them to refer you to the specialist if the referral is required.  Most insurance companies will pay for a second opinion and ENCOURAGE it.  Do NOT let anyone make you feel guilty for wanting a second opinion or for seeing a specialist.  They may tell you it isn't your immune system but at least you will feel better for having it checked out.

I agree...I get so sick of the breast milk worship sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I am sure it's the healthiest choice, but not all women can do it. Adding untruthful "facts" to the equation makes it worse for those of us who couldn't.

Allergic to semen maybe Gulf War Syndrome

Regarding the couple where the wife thought she was allergic to her husband’s sperm/semen, is it possible it may be Gulf War Syndrome.

Even though it seems Gulf War Syndrome is controversial

3 year old Jaya

Have the parents considered having a leathersmith fit the little boy with leather chaps to protect his legs and feetfrom abrasions since he has no feeling?  They  could be fitted with suspenders but with open areas for bodily functions.  It could be more durable leather on the front and softer on the back part of the legs.  At least he would be protected so he could ride his bike, etc.
